      I Taste Freedom

I can taste freedom of this on my lips as a sweet berry

Like an ice cream sundae with whipped cream and a cherry

It’s like waking up from a peaceful night of the best dream

Smiling as your eyes flutter open because it’s so real it seems

I can taste this freedom on my tongue it takes its rest

Like wearing new clothes on Sunday morning looking your best

It’s like reaching the top of a hill after patiently you climbed

Taking in its reward of the view spread out so sublime

I can taste my freedom in my mouth it’s simply bliss

Like when you fall in love and share true love’s first kiss

It’s like dancing with the clouds out in the pouring rain

You bask in the knowledge that you no longer will pain again

Freedom has never taste so sweet!

Faith

I'm so very grateful for my time slot on this earth.

To experience all of God's perfection.

There is nothing he's given us that’s not without worth.

Sometimes finding it requires some reflection.

Why must our lives be filled with illness and injury?

What heavenly purpose could that serve?

Baffling symptoms leading to untold misery.

Endless suffering that no one deserves.

It is when we are weakest that His presence appears.

Through trials and hardship we find God's power.

We learn lessons in faith to counter all of our fears.

Providing us strength through our darkest hour.

Maybe the lesson's not for the one who suffers.

But rather for a loved one or caregiver.

Regardless, the journey isn’t any less rougher.

It's through our trials that the lesson's delivered.

Having patience to accept what we don't understand.

It's one of the most difficult challenges we face.

To assume our torment was somehow divinely planned.

It's not a concept that we easily embrace.

I haven’t a clue how all of this works.

I guess that’s why they call it faith.

Unforeseen perils in this road we traverse.

Put your trust in Him, so the scripture saith.

Each morning we rise and wonder in all our despair...

How will I make it through another day?

Yet somehow through all the agony the Lord hears our prayer.

And lights our path as we make our own way.

Intrusive Thoughts

I'm sorry friend, I don't like being the bearer of bad news.

But you're sounding a bit redundant and it’s giving me the blues.

I've heard about all I care to of your intrusive thoughts.

How your benzo-injured brain has you twisted in knots.

Memories from long ago presenting fears about your morality.

As if a youthful indiscretion were some unique abnormality.

We've all had our moments that we wish we could walk back.

Regrettable words and actions when we were talkin' a little smack.

You're hardly alone here. In fact, if you want a few laughs...

Talk about embarrassing, just Google "Joe Biden Gaffes!"

Yes, they still make us cower with cringe-worthy shame.

But honestly, all these years later; no one's casting blame.

These thoughts keep crashing in, a constant source of mental tension.

They won’t haunt us in the moment unless we give them our attention.

Yes, I understand you have a brain that is chock full of fly paper.

This sticky-brain phenomena you endured all through your taper.

But you know how to handle these thoughts. You've done it many times before.

Just let them float through your mind. There's nothing there for you to explore.

Successful coping mechanisms you've used so often in the past.

They give those thoughts some space, so you’re not affected by their blast.

So, Intrusive thoughts, this well-traveled road we've been down before.

In fact, by my latest count, at least a hundred times or more.

You need a new schtick, friend. This old horse is getting lame.

Time for a new symptom; time to freshen up your game.

How about recurring visions of the "The Far Side" comic panes?

That sounds like a good fit as a symptom of Benzo Brain.

You know, McCartney figured this out back in Nineteen Seventy.

“Mother Mary comes to me speaking words of wisdom; Let it Be."

      A Good Cry

I’ve made a decision about when I’ll cry

It won’t be for nothing but a good reason why

I won’t shed any tears because of “ I couldn’t “

I’ll save them for later because now I shouldn’t

You see, I don’t have time there’s much to do

I’ve got plans for today to just get through

I’ll let my eyes water later when I’m done

And I’m sure I’ll let them really run

But I won’t be crying in the name of dissatisfaction

It will be a celebratory event as my reaction

For even in my worst point of the day

I chose to keep going anyway

Because I did, I now will know why

I’ll cry those happy tears, a good cry

“ If I’m going to cry, it’ll be for something worth it!”

May everyone’s tears be of joy!

Dedicated to all the BenzoBuddies who have found friendship and comfort from spending time here!

Crossed Paths

God crossed your paths to brighten each other's day.

Someone to make you smile and say it'll be okay.

God crossed your paths for when you fall in a hole of doubt.

Someone who believes in you, to help you dig yourself out.

God crossed your paths for when life gets a little tough.

Someone to share the load when your going gets rough.

God crossed your paths to provide a means of support.

Someone to pick you up when you fall a bit short.

God crossed your paths to share your joy and sorrow.

Someone you can lean on as you face tomorrow.

God crossed your paths to help you grow your faith.

Someone to remind you of His gifts of grace.

God crossed your paths as a show of His divine love.

Someone whose friendship is blessed from heaven above.

I love this! Yes God puts people in our lives right on time! Some are for a reason and some only for a season.

Thank you for this. Many BBs might need this uplifting poem.

Big hugs to you Blue

        You on the Inside

This is not the real you. No, it’s not.

This is just a vehicle. Have you forgot?

It’s really a shell that the real you resides.

Who you are is you on the inside.

Your vessel feels the pain and strain of life.

Heavily weighted with hardships and strife.

But God made it strong. Perfectly to run.

When it is injured, it still does all it can to go on.

Just give yourself a rest, a much needed break.

The reward will be yours to take.

Although your body may be having a rough tide.

Keep nurturing you, you on the inside.

Thank you, Admiral Stockdale

I am saddled with an existence framed by an injury.

My daily reality filled with torment and misery.

There will come a time when the pain and anguish go away.

But alas, my impending good fortune won't be today.

But I shall never doubt the outcome for its arrival is assured.

Countless warriors have come before me, their recovery secured.

So I forge on with my life, enduring each passing day.

With self-discipline and respect for this beast I must slay.

"What's this burning sensation? Why do my ears ring?"

"Where did that thought come from? Why can't I stop pacing?"

It's benzo maladaptation, My neurochemistry's corrupted.

My nervous system's stress response has been badly interrupted.

Engagement with my symptoms is a waste of energy and time.

Avoiding these rabbit holes, I must create a new paradigm.

I will tolerate their existence but I pay them no mind.

To do so relights the fire of a benzo brain, much maligned.

The passing of time is the unknown variable at play.

Yet there are measures I can take to insure against further delay.

I will take care of myself with proper diet and exercise.

I'll recognize my high anxiety as just more benzo lies.

My faith in my future well-being shall never be in question.

I'll prevail in the end, my determination fuels this perception.

I know I am ultimately safe despite how I feel.

I also know the truth that I will most certainly heal.

To my friends and family, I ask for understanding and prayer.

I'll be in and out of touch as my nervous system repairs

Maintain your belief in me and hold my place at the table.

I'll return to you better than ever, as soon as I'm able.

By Blue Lion

This poem was inspired by what has become known as The Stockdale Paradox.

"You must never confuse faith that you will prevail in the end - which you can never afford to lose - with the discipline to confront the most brutal facts of your current reality, whatever they might be."

James Bond Stockdale

Broken Wings

Even with these broken wings

I will still fly to the treetops

Even with my legs so tired

I will walk the miles

Even with my hope waning

I won't give up on change

I can still hear the music

still pound a drum

My pen still moving

moving here

I will write the words that weep

Crush me

Strike me down

I will stand up a little stronger

do you dare to face

the giant in my place
