I've used ibuprofen for pain before and it didn't impact my tinnitus. I know aspirin will really rev it up.

I take both ibuprofen and aspirin and the tinnitus stays the same.

If anyone really wants a full report on the problem read this (14 pages)

benzodiazepine-receptor-deficiency-and-tinnitusA lot to wade through with not much help for us, but it was interesting and informative. Thank you.

Well, here I go. It's been a month and two days since I cold turkeyed Ativan (lorazepam). I really was hoping the tinnitus was temporary, but nope...still here! Some days are louder than others, and today is a loud day. Have had a rough go of it. I saw an audiologist who did confirm some light hearing loss, but refused to fill out paperwork for the Starkey hear now program for me to maybe get some masked since I am lower income and have no health insurance. To make matters worse my primary care doctor wants me to see an ENT, but the one I would have seen was in the same office as my audiologist. So I was refused because i had seen the audiologist already. So, my husband got me into one independent, but more expensive in hopes they might be part of the program. I see them next Tuesday. I hate this...really sad!!

My advice, Lie!  Next time they give you the audio test just ignore all the high notes.

We are brain washed from school age to want to do good on any test so this will take discipline and practice in order to fail it.

They will give you a Starkey for free if you fail.

Be sure you talk really loud as it makes you seem deafer :D:laugh:

WHAT DID YOU SAY DOC??? WHAT, WHAT :D:laugh:

Is it available somewhere?  Today I woke up with more than 10 different tones in my head - its torture :'( Thank you very much, sorry for my baad english.

I've been completely off benzos for nearly two years now.  I've been doing basically OK for the past year or so, the ear symptoms (almost entirely in the left ear) just an annoyance most of the time.  Several times, once as recently as a few weeks ago, I was sure I had turned a corner and the T, hyperacusis, and ear fullness/pressure would soon be concerns of the past.  But this last week or so has been brutal, possibly worse than ever.  I have a slight cold and the temperature dropped like 30 degrees overnight around the time this "wave" started, but I don't see how either of those things could precipitate this.  I'm thinking it can't be a wave this far out.  Maybe my ear problems are not from benzos or maybe benzos just uncovered problems I was going to have anyway?  Problems that are now, for some reason, getting worse.  I'm thinking I need to do something more at this point than just wait it out and use maskers to sleep.  I'm thinking of getting some professional help (something I have avoided since seeing a dozen different doctors when this all started), perhaps from a Tinnitus Retraining Therapy practitioner.    Any thoughts or words of wisdom?

Thanks All and Best wishes for the Happiest Thanksgiving possible.

Hi Multiflux, I've been doing TRT with a Soundcure device Since 2013. It's defintely helped the hyperacusis, I test within normal range for the startle response now when at one time I had to wear an earplug when walking in the park since the sound of the gravel crunching under my feet was too painful. Jury is still out on the tinnitus though. I'm still tapering, plus I've had setbacks due to a neckl injury, plus I also have a severe hearing loss and the hearing aids I'm trying to adjust to aggravate the tinnitus. I was one of the most severe cases when I first started.

It's worth a consultation with a TRT specialist. I don't know if you have a hearing loss, for some people hearing aids mask the tinnitus rather thatn aggravate it. Even if you don't, you could still benefit I think from the counseling part of it. It just basically teaches what your brain is doing to create tinnitus and how to detach emotionally so it becomes a neutral sound, then it decreases since the brain has learned it isn't important. Of course that's tricky to do when you're still tapering and your CNS is fragile.

Hi Multiflux  Its the cold virus that's caused you wave viruses are the one thing we all pray we don't get for that reason as they make you feel like you've gone way backward, and that because the Benzo withdrwal/ healing,  effect our immune system as well. It will improve when your cold gets better it wil probably take a matter of weeks as even when your feeling better the virus takes time to leave our systems. The best thing you can do right now is just try and keep as comfortable as possible drink plenty of fluid and eat if you can and of course rest as well don't go pushing to do to much right now, I hope you feel better soon :)

Hi Multiflux,  I noticed a long time ago that almost everyone gets a wave when they get a flu.  From days of google research I found many links that indicate that the brain releases extra glutamate to help protect and defend brain cells from the flu virus.  It's normal and it sucks but it will pass.  Drinking lots of water helps tremendously for so many reasons including keeping the BBB flooded!

Its good to drink a few large sports drinks everyday too. The salts in them help stop water intoxication which can kill you.  Yes too much water can kill you!

My T came on during my taper when I had the flu. All my usual benzo symptoms flared up as well. I ended up holding for 2-3 weeks during this time.

Hi Bart, yes it's very common. I am surprised no one has done an official study or publication on it yet.  The evidence is all over if you look for it online.  Flu virus cause glutamate levels to raise sharply.  High fevers can "COOK" brain cells but I often wonder how much damage is done by the higher glutamate levels?

Thanks everybody for all  your helpful comments. What I thought was a bit of a cold yesterday has turned into a real doozy today. DayQuil is not touching it. So maybe it is a large part of what's going on right now.  It shouldn't be the flu, since I got a flu shot a few weeks ago. But who knows? Anyway, thanks so much again and be well!

I got the flu while on benzos. My t went up while my temperature was rising, but once it leveled off at 100/101 degrees, the volume plummeted to near silence. Then once the fever went down, the t went back to it's normal volume. I wonder what mechanism did that? It was nice to have quiet again, almost made it worth being sick.

I have 5 different tones at the moment, some days even 10..

I had a osteopathic treatment last week that was given mostly to my head. The first 3 days after that one tone was completely gone and the others did not bother me so much any more..

Anyone an idea why  or similar experience?

If only I could do that to myself instead of spending so much money..

I have it that why and and called it SYMPHONY TINNITUS.  Then it finally settled into one annoying tone years later.

Hi Everyone!  I'm back, so is my Tinnitus.  I jumped 5 weeks ago and had mild Tinnitus getting better.  Then on day 35 Bam!  I've had a bad wave for a few days and T is worse than it's been in a few months.  Not panicking, but it is disappointing.  I thought I was in the clear after a long slow taper. Hope everyone has a quiet day!

NYC Sorry to hear that you are going through a wave and your tinnitus has returned, I understand how frustrating it can be as I had bad tinnitus for 2 days then yesterday almost no tinnitus only for it to ramp up again today (not really bad but annoying).

Hope it gets better for you again soon.
