Ginger and trishy, how did you both get a concussion?

Well I'm a freak of nature jasmine bc I got a concussion without actually hitting my head. I was going to meet my daughter in law at a restaurant for breakfast it was the cracker barrel restaurant. I got out of the car and saw my granddaughter and my little grandson waiting on the sidewalk for me, I was staring at my grandson's face, he was smiling and waving to me so I as I approached the sidewalk I went to step up onto it but there was no step up it was a part of the sidewalk for a wheel chair so it was a small ramp. So I stepped up and fell awkwardly down hard onto my foot and I felt like my brain jogged upward in my head. I actually felt movement in my head followed by the worst head pain I ever experienced in my life. It lasted about 30 seconds. I froze put my hands on my head and didn't move, my daughter in law thought I had gotten dizzy or something. So about 8 hrs after my eyes started to hurt behind them. I was in terrible pain behind my eyes then a day later I started with the worse headaches I have ever had in my life followed by nausea, dizziness, blurry vision, I couldn't stand any noise, I couldn't read the words on my Kindle seemed jumbled, I couldn't watch TV my husband had to turn down there brightness of the TV to very dark. I couldn't stand light,  I couldn't sleep on my pillow the head pain would get worse.. It was just awful. So after days of experiencing these symtoms I went to the emergency room and had a ct scan of my head I was diagnosed as having a concussion and cervical spine injury like a true whiplash which resulted in post concussion syndrome. I would go on to have 3 more CT scans in about 6 months time.  I suffered for months like this. I went to numerous Drs. Neurologist, chiropractor, orthopedic Dr . All from stepping down to hard onto ramp in cute little gray flats that I had on that day. So basically no sole on the bottom of my shoe. Now I'm only 5"1 and weighed about 115 lbs at the time. It was just the weirdest thing how it happened. Anyway I learned that you don't have to hit your head to get a concussion. Just jerking your head forcefully or in my case an awkward hard landing on one foot jogged my pea brain and hurt my neck. So that's how it all happened. Then I would experience bwd the following summer then the summer after that which was last summer I would go through pots sxs from wd which was air hunger, chest pressure, couldn't even walk across a room without becoming completely breathless, low BP and heart rate. Now this summer it's covid. So the past 3 summers have been hell. Anyway it's a long story about my concussion but that's how it happened.

Trishy, I didn't know you had a concussion, what happened?

Hi Mary, I just posted to jasmine how I got my concussion and cervical spine injury. You can read it, it's long though. One thing I forgot to mention in my post to jasmine about my concussion symtoms was I also developed a stutter for a few months and thank God that went away as I healed.

I mentioned it I believe when I first joined BB here at LHSG and I'm pretty sure Ginger and I have discussed our concussion issues through PM's awhile back. It's such a long story to explain how I got it that I don't mention it much bc it's such a long story. Sometimes I just say I fell off a curb bc that's easier than going through how it really happened. But yeah like did I know that I would go through another type of hell the following year. I swear the summer of my concussion was the start of everything going downhill for me. It just never got any better after that. The shit hit the fan and it never stopped since. But I'm here and I'm alive so I'm grateful for that. 🙏🙏🙏

Yes thankfully it does heal but like benzo brain injury it's gradual. The brain takes its time,  but so be it as long as it does right. 🙏 :)

How are you feeling Mary? I hope you're feeling better. How's the heart girlfriend?🙏🙏

Knock wood, no incidents since my sister called me drunk last Saturday evening and talked and talked, and she talks so loud .  We are completely different on politics.  She knows I hate Trump but you can't argue with a drunk, so I don't     But she did get on my nerves badly.  She didn't mean too.......I just hate she drinks again.  :( :(.  Heart Dr Monday morning.  I think it's wd and anxiety.  Only had that 1 this week  ;). I hate the heart Dr appointment.  I am going to argue to keep from wearing that halter if she try's to stick it on me.  I hate that thing  :)

Hi all,

Sorry I am not yet familiar with everyone so can't respond individually.  Just wanted to express my gratitude for this group.

I didn't have panic attacks last night, nor cortisol surge this morning.  Thought when it started a bit, I drank a decaf tea a and caffein in it was enough to get me out of bed and go downstairs to clean the house a bit.

Yesterday I had panic attacks constantly the whole day and thought that I wouldn't be able to go on like this.

Amazing how one day to the next can change, even this afternoon might go sour. Waiting for stabilization.

I have heard that some people can taper without experiencing panic attacks and cortisol surge. Oh I pray god that it is possible. No tapering for me for a while.

Jasmine,

After my concussion every specialist I saw, my sports medicine dr, neuro-optometrist,  neuro-psychologist and vestibular therapist told me to be very patient with myself.  Each of them stressed that the injured brain does not heal linearly,  but rather in fits and starts.  Good days followed by not so good and that this can go on for quite awhile.

Benzo brain injury is very much like concussion, many of the same sx.  My cortisol surges began the night after my injury and of course there was nausea, dizziness, headaches, DR, vision issues, blood pressure spikes, all of which I have with benzo withdrawal.

So be patient with your brain and body.  They are trying mightily to heal,  give them time.  On the days I feel the worst I think the most healing is taking place.  That thought gets me through.  I also use positive affirmations.  My favorites are "I am strong, I am healthy, I am blessed", I am full of vim, vigor, vitality, energy and strength" and "I am free, free from sickness, poverty, lack and every kind of bondage or stronghold".  I repeat them everyday.  Benzo dependency is truly a kind of bondage but one we can overcome.

I am happy to hear of your good days, hours, moments. G

Hi Ginger,

I had a concussion too.. Pretty sure you know that though. As I read your post to jasmine about your concussion sxs I realized I had the same ones. I suffered through hell with my concussion. You're so right though concussion sxs are very similar to bwd. I had a concussion the summer before bwd and I swear every summer since has been one hell storm after another. Concussion's are wicked I wouldn't wish one on my worst enemy.

Great post to jasmine

Love and hugs,

Trishy ❤️

Trishy,

Yes concussions are awful.  Mine was five years ago today.  I'm still noticing improvement.  This year I can finally drive more than an hour without having to stop and be still and quiet.  I drove 2 1/2 hours to the lake and then back without the need to find a quiet place.  First time in five years.

I still have problems when conversing with people who talk fast and use hand gestures a lot.  My brain still has a bit of trouble processing that.  After a time I need to excuse myself and lay down in a quiet dark place.

I agree I would not wish a concussion on my worst enemy. I hope you're feeling better, no more panic attacks. G

Hey Ginger,

I think we may have mentioned our concussions through PM's some time back.. Maybe last year or so. If it wasn't you then it may have been someone else who had a concussion as well.

I like you still have some residual affects of the concussion but nothing at all like the year it happened. I have to sleep on a pretty flat pillow or I will get pressure if it's too firm. I know I have memory issues from that concussion that have not completely resolved. Actually I think that's how or why I may have mentioned my concussion here on BB bc of head pressure! Ahhh the light bulb just went on.  :D I think head pressure was being discussed with wd and concussion head pressure feels exactly the same as wd head pressure. I had horrible head pressure with concussion and wd.

I know what you mean about the driving. I couldn't drive for awhile after my concussion. I remember leaving Target parking lot while recovering and I pulled out onto the wrong side of the road. My daughter was with me and she screamed and I had no idea why,  my brain just didn't register that what I did was wrong. Ooh my poor little brain :D

Thankfully Ginger no more panic attacks since that one the other night. I'm doing ok  so far a good Saturday. I might go to church tomorrow we'll see. I haven't been since covid and I might attempt it.

You stay well my friend and math wizard

You know yourself there's nothing you can do which is the hardest part. All you can do is hope and pray she hits her rock bottom and goes for help. 🙏🙏

I insist you wear that halter monitor! You suck it up lady it's not all that bad and it's for your own good woman! They also have a button thingy you can wear but I think that's a two week event recorder. I had that last summer and I only lasted a week. It's better though than wearing the monitor. Now don't you be an unruly patient lady Jane. You do as your told and play nice at the Drs ;)  :smitten: :smitten:

Trishy,

Yes, the head pressure was intense and with me for many months.  Eventually I noticed that when I first woke up in the morning, before I moved, the head pressure was gone.  The moment I moved it came back.  I used to lay still in bed as long as I could.

A neighbor came today to visit.  I had veggies for her and persimmom cookies.  We used to work together too.  She talks fast and now my brain has that old pressure feeling.  It goes away quickly now though.

I get the same pressure with wd sx too.  My memory is still affected though much better now.  After the brain injury I could not remember anything.  I would brush my teeth and not remember two minutes later that I had.  I started going back to the bathroom and feeling my toothbrush to see if it was wet.

I had trouble with what I call word retrieval.  I know what I want to say but can't say it.  Grocery stores were like torture chambers, bright lights, loud music, too many people.  I would have to lay down in a dark quiet room for 30 or 40 minutes after to recover.  The list goes on.  We had the same sx.

I'm so sorry you went through it too.  And yes, one doesn't need a blow to the head.  Any jolt to the body or even sound waves from an explosion can cause a serious brain injury.

Someday we will both be free of benzo and post concussion syndrome.  I thank God I have improved as much as I have.

Got to get off my tablet.  After my visit with the neighbor my brain needs some rest.  See you all tomorrow.  G.

Trishy,

Was it only a few weeks ago that you were refusing to finish an antibiotic for your tick bite?  I believe Mary jumped in and told you you had better.  Now you are telling her the same about the monitor.  You are both right.  If we don't follow through with the diagnostics we never get the true answer.

Mary, I wore a holter once and didn't like it but it showed that my heart was fine.  Have any of you seen that ad for Kardia?  It's a device that you place your fingers on and you can see your heart rhythm.  I'm thinking of getting it.  I can read an EKG tracing and then I would know if my palpitations were harmless PVC's or something else like a heart block.

I think it costs about $100.00 but might be worth it for peace of mind.

I'm off to take a walk around the block.  I had a cortisone injection in my foot Thursday and the doctor wants me to let him know if it helps. G

:P :P.  If she has a reason, something is different or she sees a problem, I will wear it, but not just because it's been a couple of years.  I am having only that one symptom, no fatigue, not hard to breathe, not sweaty, ankles aren't swollen. BP and HR are fine, so there!      :D :D.    I will let ya know when I get back tomorrow  ;)    :D

GM, I am going to ask her tomorrow if she thinks one of those is worth buying.  I will buy it in a heart beat.  I already have that thing reads your oxygen level and hr.  A nurse who caught Covid said it was something everyone needed to have at home, just incase.    :).    I gave myself plantar fasciitis jogging too often and had to take shots in my heel.  They did help, but I dreaded sticking my foot out for that shot

Mary,

Let me know what your doctor says about the Kardia device.  I didn't realize your doctor just wanted to repeat the holter because it's been two years.

I barely felt the foot injection.  The doctor sprayed my skin with an anesthetic agent.  I was expecting much worse.  I just hope it works.

I'll know in a week or two.  Plantar fasciitis is terribly painful.  I had it once long ago.  G

Good afternoon/evening all -

Having ok day so far.  Slept (if you want to call it sleep) until 11:30.  I w got the weird brain / head sensation pressure thing going on.  Kind of like brain zaps but I think more like the weird pressure electrical charge going on.  I’ve been drinking iced coffee lately.  Maybe I’m having glutumate charges from the caffeine.  Who knows.  Sensitivity to sound.  I’ve had this before.  But of course my fear goes to worse case scenario.  Our bodies and brain go through so much.  I think the delicious iced coffee doesn’t help.

It’s so hot out here I wish I had a pool.  Trishy, I think you have one.  I may just stop by.  I’ll catch the next flight.  😁. One the meantime, I’m watching The Godfather.  Yikes, I’m not sure if I should be.  It’s a great movie but intense.  Maybe a comedy might be better.  Like “The Hangover” or “Old School.”  Last movie I just watched was “Malcolm X” by Spike Lee.  It was a good biographical picture.  Not one of his best but a good biography.

Anywho, not much to report.  My wave is not ‘that’ bad.  Just that annoying head sensation.  And some anxiety, I think from that glorious iced coffee.  Stupid wd f-d up my coffee enjoyment.

Love ya all,

Meems

Sorry about your reaction to iced coffee Meems. You might want to switch to iced tea. Black tea (not green) stimulates gaba production  and lowers glutamate. Although I haven't had it over 2 years, I hated those electrical zaps. Hope you feel better.

It is painful and I have really high arches.  My heel started hurting while I was jogging but I thought I could finish no problem and ended up really wishing I had stopped as soon as the pain started.  I am rather hard headed GM.    ;D

Hi all,

I had 3 decent days. I even vaccumed my house and worked in the yard today. Took the kids to parks. I am regaining more of my strenght.

I hope I continue to stabilise.

One pattern I’ve noticed with myself is two days before I start my period my hands and feet will vibrate since this benzo mess I start every 21 days from the first day I start.. I keep forgetting the vibrating is a sign lol my hands and feet where doing it again and I’m like why is this symptom back ??and then I realized I think that every time I start my period it literally only shows up when my period is about to start.
