Mary Oliver ... Wild Geese

You do not have to be good.

You do not have to walk on your knees

for a hundred miles through the desert repenting.

You only have to let the soft animal of your body

love what it loves.

Tell me about despair, yours, and I will tell you mine.

Meanwhile the world goes on.

Meanwhile the sun and the clear pebbles of the rain

are moving across the landscapes,

over the prairies and the deep trees,

the mountains and the rivers.

Meanwhile the wild geese, high in the clean blue air,

are heading home again.

Whoever you are, no matter how lonely,

the world offers itself to your imagination,

calls to you like the wild geese, harsh and exciting -

over and over announcing your place

in the family of things.

Absolutely love Mary Oliver’s poems. They speak to my nature soul. May her spirit fligh high!

Thank you Ladyden, all these poems are beautiful and I will return to them often especially in the middle of the night! Sending healing hugs.

Hardy I’m so pleased that the poems in this cafe are bringing you some comfort. I know being awake in the middle of the night can be tough. I’m wishing you happy healing and relief. Please feel free to post a poem that you may have came across that may bring a light to its readers ….if you so desire.  :smitten:

                              Inner Peace

Inner peace, it you can obtain

It’s for your taking to gain

You don’t have to drown in your rain

Claim it now for its easy to attain

Inner peace calming you within

Bringing your chaos to an end

You don’t have to wait for it to begin

Embrace it as your newest friend

Inner peace that chase away stress

Let it be what you now know best

You don’t have to settle for nothing less

Just let it be what you possess

Inner peace that lends you a hand

Filling up every corner of mental land

You don’t have to misunderstand

How it is so freeing and truly grand

Life Still Has A Meaning

Author Unknown

If there is a future there is time for mending-

Time to see your troubles coming to an ending.

Life is never hopeless however great your sorrow-

If you're looking forward to a new tomorrow.

If there is time for wishing then there is time for hoping-

When through doubt and darkness you are blindly groping.

Though the heart be heavy and hurt you may be feeling-

If there is time for praying there is time for healing.

So if through your window there is a new day breaking-

Thank God for the promise, though mind and soul be aching,

If with harvest over there is grain enough for gleaning-

There is a new tomorrow and life still has meaning.

Something I wrote the other night

You didn't know how much you could suffer. You never do.

There's always a knee jerk reaction to the tidal wave, at first.

Then the waves grow kinder, though the crashing carries on.

Your head is above water, but your body is spent. Every second.

Spent. Every wave is the last, the finisher- until the next.

You swim on, you are something else, deadman the undrownable.

You didn't know how much you could suffer. You do now.

This is really good.  "Every wave is the last, the finisher - until the next."  So true. The relentlessness is exhausting and depressing.

I have no words….this is SO true. But the minute we stop looking for the last wave, maybe it will be.

Thanks Lady! You never think you can survive another, you aways think the most recent HAS to be the last otherwise you can't go on. We do though, we're a strong bunch

                  Still I Thank You

I’ve been up and I’ve been down

Had my life turned completely around

I’ve been turned and I’ve been tossed

Thoughts plagued me that all is loss

But in spite of everything that I’ve been through

I still got to humbly say thank you

I’ve got sickness and I’ve got pain

Feels like no sunshine and all is rain

I’ve had such little joy and much sad

Looks like nothing is good when all is bad

But in spite of everything that I’ve been through

I still got to humbly say thank you

Why???

For the many blessings in spite of the mess

I’m not alone while enduring this test

For the times that I thought I wouldn’t survive

I’m awakened still struggling but yet alive

So in spite of everything that I’ve been through

I still got to humbly say thank you

Still I thank you

By LadyDen - this poem was inspired by a song written by an old friend of mine Smokie Norful. This has carried me when I didn’t have anything left to keep going.

Happy Thanksgiving!

Love all of these poems, thank you for posting them!

And thank you LadyDen for opening up this cafe  :smitten:

I heard this song from an acapella group called Rajaton and though it’s not technically poetry, I thought these lyrics were very poetic and beautiful. If and when we heal, maybe it feels like being reborn as a butterfly. Hopefully.

Butterfly

Sweet as the sound of my newformed wings

I stretch them open, I let them dry

I haven't seen this world before

But I'm excused, I'm a butterfly

Sweet as the touch of your newborn wings

We fly in circles, we play with the sun

We haven't seen this world before

So fair, so bright, so blue the sky —-

Sweet as the wind as it gently blows the day away

And the night time comes

Great are the wonders that silence shows

I fall asleep and I dream of the sun

And my butterfly”

It’s beautiful Wild. I’m glad you posted this along with that gorgeous butterfly. I’ve often said I’m on this journey as a caterpillar turning into a butterfly. Because I will be free to fly a new healed life. Free. To fly. Free. To enjoy. Free. To wake up without symptoms. Free. To travel anywhere. Just free every day.

This really put a smile on my face. Thank you.

Standing this morning on the balcony, short rain squalls, bursts of sunlight, a rainbow, more squalls ... these words arrived ...

Time Of The Mourning Wind ...

This late Fall, not quite Winter wind

Pushing, blustering its sorrow

Lost, empty wind

Missing the sound of itself in the leaves

Gathering and squalling cold rain across the land

Futile attempts at revival

And knowing, it too will pass

Replaced in the cradle of the Seasons

Hearing the coming of this Winter’s wind

The dancing, swirling snow wind

And now, quieting, abiding

Settling to the earth to rest a while

All is well

Our cradle continues it’s rocking

I love this because if we don’t know that whatever we’re dealing with will pass then we live in the misery defeated. In this recovery we can’t afford to do that. We must trust that this too shall pass….because it will.

Thank you NovaScotia. Hugs and happy healing.

This is gorgeous!  At first I assumed it was taken from a book of poetry and then I saw it was yours.  It brought tears to my eyes.

                      Water’s Edge

I’m walking by a cool flowing brook that’s headed to it’s destination

It reminds me of the recovery journey I’m on with determination

I watch the water flow rushing over the boulders and stone

It is amazing how something so soft tackles that job alone

I stare at its strength as it let nothing stand in its way

How it just presses on over fallen twigs refusing to stay

I admire how it makes a sound when falling over a stony hill

That must be the water’s victory cries letting nothing stop it’s will

I continue following it as I’m slowly walking it’s water’s edge

I think to myself as it trickles onward that this will also be my pledge

Unrelenting power it has taking things with it strong and bold

Without any hesitations but consistently pressing for its goal

I observed creatures of the land coming to drink or play

I’m glad it grabbed my attention such value it showed me today

That I’m just like this lovely flowing brook set before my eyes

My recovery has the same ebbs and flows filled with falls and rise

Standing at this water’s edge brought such peace to me this day

And just like this determined water I’ll keep going and I’ll be okay

This is so beautiful!  I love the water metaphor.  Nothing is so calming to me as a stream or river.

A poem I wrote some months ago. Hopefully it will give you some hope.

Tomorrow will come soon enough

Tomorrow will come soon enough

And today’s pain will be over

Tomorrow will come soon enough

And yesterday’s sadness grows older

Tomorrow will come soon enough

And all that you now think is untrue

Tomorrow will come soon enough

And you see how you did get through

Tomorrow will come soon enough

Suddenly it is full moon

Tomorrow will come soon enough

It always comes too soon

And as real as it all now seems

You’ll learn soon enough

It was all

just a dream.”

-Wildling

Thank you for reading and hopefully the language isn’t too bad since English is not my native language. But I love to write in English anyways. It is such a poetic language.

Can't wait until this all just a bad dream from my past!  Thank you for sharing.  What is your native language?

Wild I couldn’t chose a certain part because all of it grabbed me. You’re a talented writer too.

Your English writing is just fine my dear. Thank you for sharing this. I can’t wait for soon enough to prove that I’m on the other side of this. 🌹
