“Well, some say life will beat you down

Break your heart, steal your crown,

So I’ve started out for God-knows-where

I guess I’ll know when I get there [...]”

Tom Petty (Oct. 20, 1950 - Oct. 2, 2017)

Oh my, I absolutely love this song

“Cause it’s a bittersweet symphony that’s life

Trying to make ends meet, you slave to money, then you die” [...]

“You know I can change, I can change, I can change, I, can change,

But I’m here in my mold, I am here in my mold” [...]

I remember The Verve had to give away the rights to this song, cause the orchestral riff incorporates the sample from The Rolling Stones’ “The Last Time”. Richard Ashcroft was given $1000 and that was it. Mick Jagger and Keith Richards are also credited as composers of the song, along with Ashcroft. Here are the Songfacts with the details.

Thanks for the info, Estée. That's a shame. Like The Rolling Stones didn't have enough credits to their name and money. I think it was The Verve's only big commercial success too. Oh well, it's still a great song. One lyrics site lists Jagger and Richards as "writers" with Ashcroft credited last.

I guess it was more one of The Stones’ first managers who wanted the rights to this song. I mean the money. As he realized it was gonna a huge hit. Managers are often greedy pigs. I don’t think Keith and Mick were so much after the money. Verve recorded many wonderful songs, have all their records. Don’t know how much of a commercial success they were. I like listening to them.
