PPIs increase the effect of benzos

[...]

I searched the forum for people's experiences with PPI + benzo, and didn't find this info mentioned. So I thought I would do so:

Proton Pump Inhibitors can increase the effect of a benzo (and many other meds) with up to 30-40%. Be very careful with it, and try other products before resorting to PPIs.

SIC, I've had experience with ppi.

From what I read and noticed from using them a couple times, is that the ppi seemed to weaken the benzo. I read that u should always separate the two by at least 3 hours. It seemed to be the case when I took it. I have read of many accounts that ppi and benzo withdrawal do not mix and that many said they've had problems with them.

That is very interesting Nsindy, thank you for sharing your experience. It is the exact opposite of what the info I found said (and my own experience), but I believe you. Slower emptying might increase absorbtion, but it could also decrease stomach activity.

There is no doubt that they *do* affect benzoes one way or another. And so no matter which way one's body sways, one should probably be hesitant to use PPIs with benzos, and seek other options first.

I was prescribed PPI’s when discharged from the hospital in October. I wasn’t on benzos, severe acute w/d, but they almost killed me. I’ve never been so sick in my life-honestly.

If you read reviews on drugs.com You see the side effects in non-injured people.

Kefir cured all of my gut etc issues. All of them. It’s a probiotic and natural antibiotic.

Hello @[...] I was prescribed omeprazole PPI whilst on a benzo but didn’t take it. The accompanying leaflet under section: Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are taking certain medicines - & list includes diazepam. Clearly, there is an interaction between PPI’s & benzos as the research states.
Neither the doctor nor pharmacist noticed or gave any warning & so onus is on us to find out ourselves. Your post warns others of potential of PPI to increase benzo effect. Thank you.
