From 1985, this is "Scatterlings Of Africa", performed by Savuka and led by the late, great South African icon, Johnny Clegg.

Rest in peace, Johnny Clegg (June 7, 1953 – July 16, 2019).

Thanks, Lap, I loved watching that video, amazing performer and artist, such a great loss.  Coincidentally, I had one of his songs on my playlist, seems now's an opportune time to throw it out, also an amazing video to watch.

This one talks to me without singing a word. A Duke Ellington composition performed by the Oscar Peterson Trio and Ben Webster on tenor sax. Love watching my hometown boy Oscar Peterson tickling the ivories, whom Ellington called the "Maharaja of the keyboard".

Roar by Katy Perry.

"3 a.m." - Gregory Alan Isakov

Well, its 3 a.m. again

Like it always seems to be

Driving northbound, driving homeward

Driving wind is driving me

And it just seems so funny

That I always end up here

Walking outside in the storm

While looking way up past the tree-line

It's been some time

Give me darkness when I'm dreaming

Give me moonlight when I'm leaving

Give me shoes that weren’t made for standing

Give me tree-line, give me big sky

Get me snow-bound, give me rain clouds

Give me a bed time, just sometimes

Now you’re talking in my room

But there ain't nobody here

Cause I've been driving like a trucker

I've been burning through the gears

I’ve been training like a soldier

I've been burning through this sorrow

And the only talking lately

Is that background radio

You were my friend and I was the same

Riding that hope was like catching some train

And now I just walk but I don't mind the rain

I'm singing so much softer than I did back then

The night, I think, is darker

Than we can really say

And God’s been living in that ocean

Sending us all the big waves

And I wish I was a sailor

So I could know just how to trust

Maybe I could bring some grace back home

To the dry land for each of us

Say what you say, you say it so well

Just say you will wait like snow on the rail

I'm combing that train yard for some kind of sign

Even my own self, it just don’t seem mine

Give me darkness when I’m dreaming

Give me moonlight when I’m leaving

Give me a mustang horse and muscle

Cause I won't be going gentle

Give me slant-eye looks when I’m lying

Give me fingers when I’m crying

I ain't out there to cheat you

See I killed that damn coyote in me

"Sparrow"- Marvin Gaye

I used to hear a sparrow singing, baby

Oh, but one day as I went along

I didn't hear his song

But I know the sparrow should sing

Sing on such a morning in spring

Oh, sparrow, why don't you sing

Sing to me, oh, sparrow come around

Come around, why don't you come around

Sing about melody, oh, a melody

About the things you see

Anything you want to sing about

Just sing it on out now, sing it on out

Let the world know what life's all about

Sing, little sparrow, sing

Sing, little sparrow, sing

Oh sing, little sparrow

Won't you sing for me

And for the rest of all my world

They'll appreciate it, I know

Every time I'm feeling low

I know I can always count on you

Sing, little sparrow

About the trouble you're in

The places you've been

You can sing I know it

Don't you try to pretend

Sing while you're here

Sing a song, my dear

Let me hear your song

Do you mean to call

Sing, little sparrow, sing

I want you to sing, little sparrow, sing

I want you to sing, little sparrow, sing

A pretty bird song

Sing to me, let me hear your agony

Did you see man sucking up the land

Sing to me of peace and love

Sing to me of God and love

Sing sparrow, oh sparrow, sing

Sing to me about man's inhumanity

And all the injustice you see

Sing sparrow, sing, little sparrow, sing

Sing about what to give

Sing about about how to live

I want you to sing your tune, sparrow

Oh, little sparrow, sing

Sing to me of jealousy

Oh, sing what that's all about

Sing it all out

Shout, little sparrow

Oh, sing at me

Sing me, sing me a song

I wanna know what's wrong

Little bird, tell me, oh, sparrow

Sing, sparrow, cause I wanna know

You sweet, itty, bitty, pretty bird

Sing before you go

Sing to me, Marvin Gaye

Before you fly away

Never stop singing, sparrow

Till we hear your song

Sing your song

Sing your song

On and on and on and on

And on and on and on and on

I remember a bird

"I've Been Looking"

Johnny Clegg (RIP) :'( ft. his son, Jesse Clegg

I've been looking for something to lose

I've been looking for something to prove

Oh well, it's hard to even tell

I've been looking for a brighter day

I've been looking for the words to say

Oh well, it's hard to find yourself

[CHORUS:]

Looking at the sky

And I'm wondering how I got here

When all I wanna do is tell you about my fear

Standing on the edge

And I'm looking at your face

Tell you how I feel

Tell you how I feel

These are the things I can't replace

I've been living in an empty room

Walking in someone else's shoes

Oh well, it's hard to find yourself

I've been waiting on another view

I've been holding out a light for you

Oh well, it's hard to even tell

[CHORUS]

Oh ah oh eiyo

Oh ah oh eiyo

Oh ah oh eiyo

Oh ah oh

(x2)

Looking at the sky

And I'm wondering how I got here

All I wanna do is tell you about my fear

Standing on the edge

And I'm looking at your face

Tell you how I feel

Tell you how I feel

Standing on the edge

And I'm looking at your face

Tell you how I feel

Tell you how I feel

Tell you how I feel

Tell you how I feel

I've been looking for a brighter day

I've been looking for the words to say

Oh well, it's hard to even tell

"Soft Place To Land"

Sara Bareilles

Sugar

Sugar

Butter, flour

Sometimes I still see her

My mother, the dreamer

She'd say, "Nothing's impossible, child"

A dream needs believing

To taste like the real thing

Like some stranger you recognize

So pure, so electric

So sure, so connected

To those little believers inside

May we all be so lucky

But dreams are elusive

The kind we've gotten used to

Is nothing I can feel

Nothing I can hold

Nothing I can have

Nothing that I know

Dreams come and they go

But hold them and keep them

And know that you need them

When your breaking point's all that you have

A dream is a soft place to land

May we all be so lucky

Sugar, butter, flour

"Can't Live With The World"

Laura Mvula

International_hug_day_-_cute_animals_hugging_-_pandas_-_wwf_-_instagram_-_good_housekeeping_uk.jpg

You can't live

With the world on your shoulders

Your shoulders

Take my hand

And you'll see love will find us

Will find us

You've been lost

In a dark place for a long time

A long time

Now I've found you

I'll stay here and hold you

I'll stay

I'll hold you till morning

I'll hold you tight

You can't live

With the world on your shoulders

Your shoulders

Come to me

Say goodbye

To your struggles

I'll stay

I'll hold you till morning

I'll hold you

I'll stay here now

I'll hold you till morning

I'll hold you tight

Remember how far you've come

From the start till the end

Depend on me

You can't live

With the world on your shoulders

I'll stay here

I'll hold you till morning

I'll hold you

I'll stay here now

I'll hold you till morning

I'll hold you tight

You can't live

With the world on your shoulders

You can't live

With the world on your shoulders

Stay to the morning comes

Stay to the morning comes

Hold you to the morning light

Hold you to the morning light

Poster_Turandot.jpg

In Puccini's opera Turandot, there's the popular aria Nessun dorma, which translates to "Nobody shall sleep". A beautiful and stirring piece which you've no doubt heard. But you may not know the story... Here's a synopsis I found which leads to the aria:

Calaf, an unknown prince, falls in love at first sight with the beautiful but haughty Princess Turandot. According to royal edict, a suitor who wishes to marry her has to solve three riddles; any wrong answer results in death. Calaf accepts the challenge.

Much to the delight of the princess's father, as well as the entire kingdom, Calaf answers all three riddles correctly. But Turandot refuses to marry this stranger. She doesn't even know his name.

The prince then makes a deal with her: If she can figure out his name before dawn, he will gladly die. If she cannot, they will marry. Turandot agrees and the countdown begins.

Late that night, the princess declares that no one will sleep until she learns the name of her suitor. In fact, she cries out that everyone in the kingdom will be killed if no one steps forward to reveal his identity. Meanwhile, Calaf confidently sings "Nessun dorma"—"Nobody shall sleep"...

Nessun dorma! Nessun dorma!

Tu pure, o, Principessa,

nella tua fredda stanza,

guardi le stelle

che tremano d'amore

e di speranza.

Ma il mio mistero è chiuso in me,

il nome mio nessun saprà!

No, no, sulla tua bocca lo dirò

quando la luce splenderà!

Ed il mio bacio scioglierà il silenzio

che ti fa mia!

(Il nome suo nessun saprà!...

e noi dovrem, ahime, morir!)

Dilegua, o notte!

Tramontate, stelle!

Tramontate, stelle!

All'alba vincerò! Vincerò! Vincerò!

Nobody shall sleep! Nobody shall sleep!

Even you, oh Princess,

in your cold room,

watch the stars,

that tremble with love and with hope.

But my secret is hidden within me,

my name no one shall know...

No! No!

On your mouth, I will tell it when the light shines.

And my kiss will dissolve the silence that makes you mine!

(No one will know his name and we must, alas, die.)

Vanish, o night!

Set, stars! Set, stars!

At dawn, I will win! I will win! I will win!

Here's Luciano Pavarotti performing the aria in the 1982 film Yes, Giorgio.

Some great (Aussie) choices there, Crowman  ;), thanks for sharing!  Hoping you have a smooth ride moving forward, and that you won't have to go through too many more tough days.

Wow, look how young he was!  And great story-line, will have to research to find out how it ends, lol.  I grew up with opera music playing, my folks were big into it, so am familiar with many of the tunes.  Thanks, Shook.

"Nightingale I" - Judy Collins

Jacob's heart bent with fear

Like a bow with death for its arrow

In vain he searched for the final truth

To set his soul free of doubt

Over the mountains he walked

With his head bent searching for reasons

Then he called out to God for help

And climbed to the top of a hill

Wind swept the sunlight through the wheat fields

In the orchard the nightingale sang

While the plums that she broke with her brown beak

Tomorrow would turn into songs

Then she flew up through the rain

With the sun silver bright on her feathers

Jacob put back his frowns and sighed

And walked back down the hill

God doesn't answer me

And He never will :'(

"Long Highway"

Mark Knopfler

Heard a bell being tolled

Before the break of day

Heard my name being called

Down that long highway

Now you don't get long

You don't get long

You don't get long to stay

Kiss me once and I'll be gone

Down that long highway

Spirits call from way beyond

Lord, I may not disobey

Spare a thought for the vagabond

Down that long highway

Down that long highway

Down that long highway

Heard a bell being tolled

Before the break of day

Heard my name being called

Down that long highway

Now you don't get long

You don't get long

You don't get long to stay

Kiss me once and I'll be gone

Down that long highway

Spirits call from way beyond

Lord, I may not disobey

Spare a thought for the vagabond

Down that long highway

Down that long highway

Down that long highway

"Head Full Of Doubt / Road Full Of Promise"

The Avett Brothers

There's a darkness upon me

That's flooded in light

In the fine print they tell me

What's wrong and what's right

And it comes in black

And it comes in white

And I'm frightened

By those who don't see it

When nothing is owed

Deserved or expected

And your life doesn't change

By the man that's elected

If you're loved by someone

You're never rejected

Decide what to be and go be it

[CHORUS:]

There was a dream

And one day I could see it

Like a bird in a cage

I broke in and demanded

That somebody free it

And there was a kid

With her head full of doubt

So I'll scream till I die

Or the last of those bad thoughts

Are finally out

There's a darkness upon you

That's flooded in light

In the fine print they tell you

What's wrong and what's right

And it flies by day

And it flies by night

And I'm frightened

By those who don't see it

There was a dream

And one day I could see it

Like a bird in a cage

I broke in and demanded

That somebody free it

And there was a kid

With her head full of doubt

So I'll scream till I die

Or the last of those bad thoughts

Are finally out

(x2)

There's a darkness upon me

That's flooded in light

In the fine print they tell me

What's wrong and what's right

And it comes in black

And it comes in white

And I'm frightened

By those who don't see it

Freddie Mercury

"Time"

(Acoustic Version)

"Time Waits For No One"

Time waits for nobody

Time waits for nobody

We all must plan our hopes together

Or we'll have no more future at all

Time waits for nobody

We might as well be deaf and dumb and blind

I know that sounds unkind

But it seems to me we've not listened to

Or spoken about it at all

The fact that time is running out for us all

Time waits for nobody

Time waits for no-one

We've got to build this world together

Or we'll have no more future at all

Because time, it waits for nobody

You don't need me to tell you what's gone wrong

You know what's going on

But it seems to me we've not cared enough

Or confided in each other at all

It seems like we've all got our backs against the wall

Time waits for nobody

Time waits for no-one

We've got to trust in one another

Or there'll be no more future at all

Time waits for nobody

Time won't wait for no-one

Let's learn to be friends with one another

Or there'll be no more future at all

Time waits for nobody

Waits for nobody

Time, time, time, time

Waits for nobody at all

Time waits for nobody

Time won't wait, waits for no-one

Let us free this world forever

And build a brand new future for us all

Time

Waits for nobody

Nobody, nobody

For no-one

"Build Me Up From Bones"

Sarah Jarosz

web_105347_panda.jpg

Build me up from bones

Wrap me up in skin

Hold me close enough

To breathe me in

The moon’s a fingernail

Scratching on the back

Of the night

In which we lay beside

[CHORUS:]

I held every inch of you

I wrote every line for you

I made time when time was all but gone

You’re the love I’ve always known

The night’s so dark and grey

But you’ve helped me find my way

Through the wild and wonders

Of this world

So take me with you now

I need to show you how

I can love you

Better than before

[CHORUS]

Play it sweet and low

We’ve got nowhere to go

I am yours

And you’re the love I know

Awwwww, Shook.  :smitten:

And So It Goes by Billy Joel, sung by The King's Singers

In every heart there is a room

A sanctuary safe and strong

To heal the wounds from lovers past

Until a new one comes along

I spoke to you in cautious tones

You answered me with no pretense

And still I feel I said too much

My silence is my self defense

And every time I've held a rose

It seems I only felt the thorns

And so it goes, and so it goes

And so will you soon I suppose

But if my silence made you leave

Then that would be my worst mistake

So I will share this room with you

And you can have this heart to break

And this is why my eyes are closed

It's just as well for all I've seen

And so it goes and so it goes

And you're the only one who knows.
