If You Could Pick a Song or Songs That Describe Your Benzo W/D, What and Why?

I'm So Afraid by Fleetwood Mac

Written by Lindsey Buckingham.

Live link:

Lyrics below. I picked this, as it explains how I feel during this experience, and the benzo lies that keep looping in my head.

There is a a story behind this song, it was intended for the second Buckingham-Nicks album. The first was a commercial failure. If that wasn't enough of a crushing blow to Lindsey Buckingham, he came down with Mononucleosis. He was very sick, fought to get well for a year. So, passed his time writing songs, hoping that he and Stevie Nicks might do better with their next album. This song was about that time dealing with a long illness, being isolated, the failure of the first album, he wondering if the second would bomb, would he ever get well, would he perform again. There's a lot of emotion when he sings this live. It resonated with me.

There's an aftermath. Mick Fleetwood was in the same recording studio that Buckingham and Stevie Nicks recorded their first album. The song "Frozen Love" from their debut album was playing. Fleetwood Mac had just lost their guitarist. Fleetwood asked about the song, he was awed by the guitarist. Wasn't long before Fleetwood offered a now recovered Buckingham, the lead guitar role in the band. Buckingham countered that he would on one condition, they had to take then-girlfriend Nicks too. Fleetwood agreed. Nicks and Buckingham debuted on Fleetwood Mac's so-called White album. It was a big commercial success, and "I'm so afraid" ended up on it. The famed Rumours album followed two years later. Stevie Nicks had her own experience with benzos, I wish she wrote a song about that.

There's an aftermath for me too. For all of us. I don't know when, but I know it will happen.

People have made comments about a song they would pick to represent their benzo experience. But not really threads devoted to this. I recall one person mentioning Crazy Train by Ozzie Osbourne. I could see how that would work.

I've been alone

All the years

So many ways to count the tears

I never change

I never will

I'm so afraid the way I feel

[Chorus]

Days when the rain and the sun are gone

Black as night

Agony's torn at my heart too long

So afraid

Slip and I fall and I die

[Verse 2]

I been alone

Always down

No one cared to stay around

I never change

I never will

I'm so afraid the way I feel

[Chorus]

Days when the rain and the sun are gone

Black as night

Agony's torn at my heart too long

So afraid

Slip and I fall and I die

How I feel

Days when the rain and the sun are gone

Black as night

Agony's torn at my heart too long

So afraid

Slip and I fall and I die

The song “’92 Weird Diseases” appears on the third disc of The Magnetic Fields’ 2017 album, “50 Song Memoir.” The album indeed includes 50 songs, each of which refers to a year of frontman and songwriter Stephen Merritt’s life. As the title suggests, “92 Weird Diseases” describes the various illnesses and medical afflictions Merritt has faced throughout his life, including petit mal epilepsy, nearly fatal renal cysts and hyperacusis.

I get weird diseases

Wafting on the toxic breezes

I get weird diseases

Debilitating spider bites

Hiccups for three days and nights

A thousand earaches, one deformed eardrum

Hyperacusis, what's that from?

This guy had it, and so much more. Having had it myself, it was one of my biggest symptoms. NAD+ nasal spray eliminated it for me. Don't know why, don't know how. And I know it doesn't work for everybody. Hyperacusis affected me far more than tinnitus. Most people have the latter.

ring of fire

Anyone's version as that rind of fire changes....

:D

It's gotta be the original by The Man in Black (Johnny Cash), which was written by then-wife June Carter Cash. For him, it had dual meaning. He struggled with substance abuse, and he and June struggled with their relationship. I could see benzo withdrawal being described as falling into a burning ring of fire.

Jack boo's got a bunch of songs. Mine will probably change during this journey, but right now it's stuck on 'I'm so Afraid.'

Yes that history of that song -- one of the reasons I think it fits oh oh oh so well.

Love your magnetic fields choice!! But dang if that aint it!

weird disease galore!

Now for something to ease that fear.....

Yeah, Ring of Fire has quite a history behind it.

I found Magnetic Fields by searching for a song that mentioned hyperacusis. That guy sure has had his share of medical issues. At least he was able to put it into a song.

Glad to see a few responding to this thread. Music helps me so much. Without hyperacusis bothering me, I can at least listen to some. Now I deal with tinnitus. I bet there's a song about that somewhere...  ::)

Hi SS, I found that song. I love Johnny cash

Johnny Cash “Ring of Fire”

https://youtu.be/QfCOJLRk2D4

somehow that mariachi feel to it all kind fits too! This journey is zany!

Hahahaha that was a good laugh

. Mariachi feel 😂

June wrote the song, but Johnny Cash added the Mariachi. He wanted a Mariachi band, he got it.  ;)

And speaking of Johnny Cash his cover of Trent Reznor's (Nine Inch Nails)  'Hurt' is such a sad and melancholic melody. Reznor wrote it one way, Cash sang it to fit his own experience.

I can see if in terms of benzo w/d, as I wish I never turned to psychiatry, and regret I did. I would have found a way without them. I should have.

Found a song about... tinnitus!

Pet Shop Boys - Radiophonic

In the air

In the air

Radiophonic

In the air

[Verse 1]

The night was long

Now the crowd has gone

There's sunlight on my bed

Feels like a radiophonic workshop's

Beaming straight into my head

It could make you weep

I can't get to sleep

There's ringing in my ears

Like a radiophonic workshop

Orchestrating all my stupid fears

[Chorus]

Radiophonic

I think I'm in love

Radiophonic

Radiophonic

I think I'm in love

Radiophonic

[interlude]

[Verse 2]

My skin is itching

I'm totally twitching

With the pounding in my head

Like a dud sub-sonic beat-box

Booming bass under the bed

My hands are shaking

My mind is aching

With a feeling deep inside

That you've been staring

Sending signals

Every time our paths collide

[Chorus]

Radiophonic

I think I'm in love

Radiophonic

"Once in a Lifetime"

Talking Heads

And you may find yourself living in a shotgun shack

And you may find yourself in another part of the world

And you may find yourself behind the wheel of a large automobile

And you may find yourself in a beautiful house, with a beautiful wife

And you may ask yourself, "Well... how did I get here?"

Letting the days go by, let the water hold me down

Letting the days go by, water flowing underground

Into the blue again after the money's gone

Once in a lifetime, water flowing underground

And you may ask yourself, "How do I work this?"

And you may ask yourself, "Where is that large automobile?"

And you may tell yourself, "This is not my beautiful house"

And you may tell yourself, "This is not my beautiful wife"

Letting the days go by, let the water hold me down

Letting the days go by, water flowing underground

Into the blue again after the money's gone

Once in a lifetime, water flowing underground

Same as it ever was, same as it ever was

Same as it ever was, same as it ever was

Same as it ever was, same as it ever was

Same as it ever was, same as it ever was

Water dissolving and water removing

There is water at the bottom of the ocean

Under the water, carry the water

Remove the water at the bottom of the ocean

Letting the days go by, let the water hold me down

Letting the days go by, water flowing underground

Into the blue again, into the silent water

Under the rocks and stones, there is water underground

Letting the days go by, let the water hold me down

Letting the days go by, water flowing underground

Into the blue again after the money's gone

Once in a lifetime, water flowing underground

And you may ask yourself, "What is that beautiful house?"

And you may ask yourself, "Where does that highway go to?"

And you may ask yourself, "Am I right? Am I wrong?"

And you may say to yourself, "My God! What have I done?"

Same as it ever was, same as it ever was

Same as it ever was and look where my hand was

Time isn't holding up, time isn't after us

Same as it ever was, same as it ever was

Same as it ever was, same as it ever was

Same as it ever was, same as it ever was

Letting the days go by, same as it ever was

Here a twister comes, here comes the twister

Same as it ever was, same as it ever was

Same as it ever was, same as it ever was

Once in a lifetime, let the water hold me down

Letting the days go by

Kinda describes the last years -- "how did I get here?"
