Can you take Gabapentin as needed?

I get some bizarre nerve sensations that get pretty unbearable at times, specifically in my head.  I do know from prior experience that a very small dose of Gabapentin will sort of kill it.  Otherwise, it may last a few days and is very uncomfortable. 

 

Would taking 100mg of Gabapentin every now and then, maybe once a week on average, cause problems?
