For me, it was not some miracle cure but it did seem to help.  I've also read that some people with depression are deficient in vitamin D and such people benefit from taking a D3 supplement.

thanks for the responses so far.. I am already taking B3, mag/cal, and meletonin for sleep. Today was a horrabl day today so lonely and unable to get off the computer!!gosh I hate how these benzos mess with our mind.. I have not even started tapering yet in the middle of crossing over to val. and Im just hoping things might calm down a bit when I am crossed over.. I am having no physical symptoms just depression and Ocd with being on the computer and these sites and smoking ALOT of cigs.. I get the depression especially in the morning and after attempting to take naps (dont really fall completely asleep but sorta dose off. It is miserable and I know alot of it might just be fear but no matter how much I try and reassure myself I just feel doomed. I hate not feeling like myself.. so I too just did some research on fish oil and it seems pretty positve.. So I am excited to give it a try tomorrow.. I need something to relieve this at this point I would much rather have the anziety then this depression and lack of motivation. :( as far as sunlight goes I live in oregon and summer is now over and looking at the next three days being rain.. not looking forward to that!

Hi:

I am in Seattle and as the weather dims I get out my trusty sunlamp.  I have used them for several years and they really do help.  If you decide to buy one, get the biggest most intense one you can find.  I have owned a big one and a small one and the big one is way better.

  • 2 weeks later...

I took some in the past, but it's hard to know when you feel good what contributed to it.

I now bought more though, but haven't opened it yet because it also has other oils in it... omega 3, 6, and 9.  So I'm unsure what all of the extra stuff does and unsure whether to take it or get something with only fish oil.

I do take vitamin B, D, and a multivitamin currently.  And I've felt great when off the benzos...  So whether vitamins contribute or not I don't know, but they may be part of it.

Have you had your vitamin D levels tested at all?  That might be worth looking into also.

Do let us know how the fish oil works out for you.

Hope you feel better soon.

Some things you might want to try are:

1: Go for a walk first thing in the morning, regardless of the weather.  20 minutes outside, even on an overcast rainy day, is more beneficial than any "sunlamp".

2: Exercise in the early morning,  30 mins cardio would be sufficient.

[you could combine 1 and  2]

3: Get away from the computer,  it's really bad for your eyes and posture,  force yourself to do things even if you don't want to.

4: Eat fish instead of taking the capsules.  It's delicious, healthy and will get you away from the computer while you cook and eat it.

hmmm.  you mean you feel NOT DEPRESSED most of the week?  that's great.  You don't feel depressed now?  Why not log off and get outdoors a bit!  Walking in the rain can be so much fun.  Kids love it.  be a kid again!

I'm tempted to take my fish oil [ills back and get different ones.  i haven't opened it yet and my mom said she was told omega 6 is BAD for you.  Well the pills I got have omega 3, 6, and 9.  So maybe I should just go after the 3.

Hi there,

Fish oil really helped with alot of my mental symptoms. I had to take rather large amounts to see a difference but perhaps it was because most fish oils doesn't have alot of DHA. Getting lots of sunlight early in the day is great for depression as well...get out in the sun and take a nice walk and think happy thoughts!

yeah beeper sounds pretty much how she siad.  that diet usually gives enough or too much of it.

I also am still unsure what's considered too much vitamin D, so i need to get all of this sorted.

Hi,

I take fish oil in liquid form (Omega 3)  and find it helps a lot...I can tell when I haven't taken it...depression returns not long afterwards.  I need to print a larger note on the 'fridge as a reminder.  Liquid fish oil is absorbed much better than capsules.  But I do use them when out of town.  :)

I'm going to add my fish oil back into my supplement regime tonight.  Things seem to be going along okay, especially since I added in some D3 (I walk every day for an hour in the sunshine, but unfortunately it didn't so much for my depression  :tickedoff:) so hopefully the fish oil will just make things even peachier.

At 3 months off benzos, I tried fish oil and B complex.  Didn't agree with me but who knows, could've been one or the other. Should've added one at a time :idiot:.  Started back on the fish oil pills and B complex back in August (at 9 months off).  Anxiety slightly elevated but decided it wasn't to bad.  Last week or two, anxiety a little higher, gonna lose the B complex but keep the fish oil twice a day.  I've also taken to adding a can of sardines twice a week (like James suggested).  We also try to eat salmon at least once a week.  Eat a lot of peppers in salads too .  Generally feeling good, maybe not peachy yet Bev :pokey::D:).  I'm thinking I need to lose 10 more lbs to become a Georgia peach ;D.

Happy Halloween  :crazy:>:D:idiot:>:D8):D:muscle::police::wacko::laugh:,

Vertigo (no more)

Hi ashros,

Welcome to BBs!

I agree with the others. Vitamin B, if it doesn't rev you up too much... it certainly is essential to the central nervous system. I take the antioxidants A, C & E to help clean and metabolize any "crap" in my system, such as nicotine. I think the D and fish oil are good too.

I didn't see Magnesium listed. A couple of Drs. (for whatever it's worth) mentioned magnesium to me. Though it can be a little tough on the stomach... i.e. too much bathroom time. But sunflower seeds, almonds and I believe, salmon are also very high in magnesium.

I've also had a history of depression. And I would say the recommendations for sunlight and exercise are the most critical. And also, as a heavy nicotine user, I personally think nicotine is disruptive to the whole central nervous system, anxiety levels, and sleep. So I am trying to cut down.

Best wishes to you,

Albie

Hi ashrose,

I wouldn't want to do without Omega 3 fish oil.  Both my husband and myself have serious eye problems.  I had been taking fish oil for approx. 2 years, but hubby wasn't interested in taking it.  Then his eye specialist recently recommended he do so.

We eat fish 3-4x a week, mostly wild salmon.  Hubby eats sardines 1-2x weekly.  I started taking fish oil for depression, knowing at the time there were other benefits too.

Now I started taking it again, but it's unclear how much is recommended.  Apparently 1,000 to 2,000 mg of fish oil per day.  But then it said on some site you can take as much as 6,000 if you have depression.  I'm only taking 1,000 to 2,000 so I hope I didn't waste money only to not get benefits.

Has anyone noticed weird breathing problems when taking it?  It seems like I had some breathing issue and now when I took it again I think I may have it again..., but I may be imagining it.

i have not noticed the breathing thing.. from what i understand about the dosage is you want to have 1,000-2,000mg of the actual omega 3's not the total mg's of pill. I read a post of somebody on here using Omegabrite fish oil and they give alot of good info on their website as well as far as dosing goes.. I have heard it is one of the best brands as far as quality goes but who knows..

my previous doctor told me that between 2,000mg and 4,000mg of fish oil/omega-3's per day has been medically found to help depression.  i take between 4,000mg and 6,000mg per day but i am still having depressive episodes during this withdrawal.

me too.. but it at least seems to be less frequent with the use of fish oil.. i'm thinking about going to try a better brand.. see if it makes a difference i read alot that the quality of the omega 3's make a huge difference.. the ones i've been using are just the cheap ones from wal mart.. i also hear the higher the EPA the better.. did you research around on brands/quality or just pick them up from the store like me? also remember this is just depression from withdrawal and it will lift for us!
