They'd land up even worse off there, much of the time.

Why not change the policy to ensuring prisons have doctors and trained medical staff who actually know a thing or two about medicines?

I agree, but it appears that there's a huge lack of ones who understand on the outside let alone a prison.

Is it rare to die of heroin wd when benzos aren't in the mix? 

 

I feel like I came close to death myself after withdrawing from only clonazepam.  Within a week I had lost 15 pounds on my small frame, diahrea, hallucinations, possible seizures, etc. 

 

And you know, I would gladly go back in time and become a heroin addict vs ever taking a damn benzo!  At least I could have safely stopped heroin and recovered within a month.  17 months later and I'm still in hell every day.

I'm sorry you had to go through that. It's very sad to me. :'( I don't know much about heroin, but when I went into detox for my Xanax my roommate was a heroin addict plus pregnant and the doc gave her something, like methadone, to help her. She slept all of the time and never washed or ate. The only time I really saw her was when she went down to the lobby and into a phone booth to shoot up again. It would not surprise me if she was dead, or that poor baby of hers. Both sad stories. I hope you get better really soon. I sure know the feeling of being rotten. I will never ever go to detox again. I'd rather die and be done with it.
