Muscle weakness/nerve pain

I have a question for everyone: has anyone had muscle weakness or nerve pain that they believe was caused by klonopin?  I hurt my lower back in 2012 by lifting something.  It didn't really hurt too much, but I noticed when I was walking on a treadmill I didn't have a lot of control over my left foot.  I have seen physical therapists, orthopedists, a chiropractor, an acupuncturist and a neurosurgeon who all say that there is nothing wrong.  They can't figure it out.  Nothing has improved my condition.

Is it possible that klonopin can exacerbate a nerve or muscle problem?  I'm not talking about a symptom of withdrawal.  I'm talking about having these problems while ON klonopin.

Thanks a lot!

Muscle weakness, nerve problems can occur while you are taking benzos and more after you decide to taper. Even more after you stop taking that poison. I too have less control on my left leg and I know its because of benzos. I too use a treadmill and I know how you must be feeling. Good that you decided to quit.

Thank you so much!  Is this something that will improve over time?  Hiraeth, can you describe your muscle weakness for me?  Mine is so strange.  I feel like I just don't have control over my left foot.  It's really bizarre.

Thanks!

I do not know when it will improve. I am in the same boat as you. The difference is, I'm off benzos since 2 years and I feel the muscles are better than before. I get tired in minutes if I try to run on a treadmill. If I walk fast, I feel random jerks ( like electric shocks ) in my left leg and at times in the right too. Many times I lose balance while walking fast and almost fallen down. Now, im extra careful while doing any kind of exercise.

Remember not to do any strenuous exercises. You will hurt the weak muscles and suffer more. Take it slow and steady. I was on this poison for more than 10 years. So I know it has done a lot of harm to me.

I could have written this post. I've had the same thing with my left foot/leg. Never had a problem before Klonopin. It is in my case definitely the benzo.

Hi there,

Yes, you can. I am on the same boat as you. The whole thing started with back pain, then loss of sleep then benzos to sleep then back pain and other pains from hell! Also pain like pins and needles.

How is your sleep?

I am 4.5 months of Klonopin and both pain and sleep are bad although sleep has started to improve a little overall.

It should get better with time!

S.

I experience back pain on and off during benzo and withdrawal. It felt worse when I was still on benzo though. My upper back and shoulders felt heavy and my arms felt a little weak. At almost 4 months out, my current back pain is not as bad as before. Hopefully, it won't be coming back after it disappears. I hope yours will get better too!

Hello Benzojp! I am on my 26th month out and still having many problems with muscle weakness and nerve pain. In fact, years ago when I was making the rounds of doctors trying to figure out why I was so sick (tolerance withdrawal), a neurologist sent me to a teaching hospital a few hours away to be tested for multiple sclerosis. I had weakness throughout my body, but it affected mainly the left side of my body. At it's worst. I walked often rolling my left foot to the outside because it was so cramped and held my left arm a bit contorted as well. I had pain in various areas as well. I endured a day of testing at this hospital and the neurologist said it wasn't MS thank goodness, but she was stumped. A couple of years later, when I found out it was the benzos, I called her and she seems to be glad I told her it was the benzos and listened to what I had to say according to the Ashton Manual, symptoms people on this site have experienced, etc. She then told me a story of an elderly patient she had that she tried to get off benzos and it didn't work. Too hard for this poor woman. The doctor said they had to leave her on it. I told the doctor, "That patient will never get better and will get sicker." It's hard to believe that a specialist such as a neurologist isn't aware of the benzo dangers. At least, they say they know nothing. Anyways, nerve pain is just awful. My dog can barely touch me at times because it feels like a needle. This far out I expected things to improve more, but I have to say that the MS symptoms HAVE abated and flare up once in a while. I expect all of this (God, I hope) to go away once I heal.

I am walking daily to strengthen my core muscles, but don't dare do any strenuous exercises for fear of injury. Also, too puny feeling to do much else.

Hopefully, these things will improve for you in the near future.  Take care!

Ruthie B
