A little history for you:

 

Here, from 1994, is a study that acknowledges the benzo withdrawal syndrome with which we're all very well acquainted. That's 20 years ago! Of course, they got the time frame wrong, but it's interesting to see a complete acknowledgment of the existence of a syndrome.
