Just wanted to pop in and thank everyone who responded to my last update! It has been an insanely busy work week so I have been lazy with my responses. You really have given me a lot of optimism about the path ahead.

We've got company coming over on Saturday for the first time in FOREVER. I was just fine being social before this last bout with vertigo but after that happens I tend to cocoon myself a bit for a while.

I also have my 20 year anniversary coming up next week. We planned to do something big but the vertigo wiped those plans out too. I'm contemplating whether or not I can handle going out to dinner. It's not a part of the plans at the moment but I thought it would be a nice surprise if I could manage it. You only get one 20th anniversary. I'd be lying if I said I wasn't disappointed in myself for ever getting on benzos and making this an issue. But it is what it is.

Symptoms have been really mild other than a toothache situation which may or may not be benzo related. I think WD is making me grind my teeth at night, which is not a problem I've had before. My bite is actually shifting (my front teeth never touched after some cosmetic dental work and now they do). Such weirdness. I'm trying to put off seeing the dentist until after I'm off valium. Might not have a choice though.

Eh, could be worse, right?

Just FYI...once iI got below 3mg, I had zero sxs.  Most folks have lost their dependency (have recovered, healed, etc ) before they get to a xero dose.

Some folks have a rough time with the last 2mg and some don't based on genetics and med sensitivity.  Everyone is so different.  I still had symptoms the last 2mg but I slowed down to the point where it was manageable.  Had I pushed through and kept going I would probably be in bad shape right now but I am not.  If you strive hard for a "symptom free" taper and still have symptoms, you'll be hard on yourself and start questioning your taper.  I see people on these boards go back and forth between cut and hold and a symptom based taper which turns into a vicious cycle. I was hard on myself so I then lowered my expectations and made it a manageable taper.  In my opinion a "symptom free" taper doesn't just happen because of the taper rate but there are a lot of other factors that include med sensitivity and genetics.

So people if you see someone say they had a "symptom free" taper do not think you will and do not be hard on yourself and strive too hard to expect a symptom free outcome.  My best advice is to listen to your body and if you can't make it a "symptom free" taper then lower expectations a bit and make it a manageable taper.  Do not keep pushing through your symptoms, it will just build up and knock you on your ass.

Thanks arcade. This has been my own personal experience as well. I'm now down to 8.5 mg from 15 mg and haven't had a symptom free day yet. But I've worked to keep it tolerable. I don't know what my taper is going to be like from 8.5 on down, but I'm predicting more of the same.

I think it's worth mentioning here for those especially who are tapering for the first time - and were lucky enough to find this forum prior to trying to get off  and failing or having to reinstate - Not everyone will have a hard time getting off.  I myself - have 2 friends who were on Xanax and Klonipin for long periods of time (Years) - Both tapered under a Dr's plan and both had very little sxs afterwards - That is certainly not the case for ME - i did a 4 month long taper directly from .5mg of Klonipin - prior to finding this forum - and was SLAMMED 3 weeks out with symptoms - and A lot of people here suffer - BUT for those just starting out - no need to freak out yet - Plenty come off virtually unscathed.  I hope that gives someone hope - as for me - I think I'm hosed but..........

That right there shows that med sensitivity and genetics plays a role in tapering and recovery.

Maybe one could say, "I had a symptom free taper because of my genes, med sensitivity and taper rate."

My mother works with a lady that did a two month taper from a high dose of ativan.  She didn't even know what the pill was while takng her cocktail of pills.  She came off symptom free during her taper and after.  Boy was I jealous but I am glad she did not suffer.  :)

For sure, Arcade - and I have a friend tapering right now with her Dr - her dr has assured her that my case is .05% - now I DONT believe that statistic AT ALL - but the point being for new people not to get too worked up or scared - bc many do come off this drug fine.......and I wish Dr's would implement slower longer tapers and be sure to educated their patients - bc my 4 month ended up being a disaster - and now - if you believe in it - I'm "Kindled" - the risk of a faster taper is not worth it - for anyone.......

100% agree.

By the way I am the guy that takes one tylenol instead of two because one tylenol does fine for me.  I have a huge med and caffeine sensitivity.  One can of mountain dew will get me super hyper.

So nearly 2 pages are full of paranoia (and some useful info) and no one responds to the member who could use some support. I find this annoying.

@solaceandpeace, congratulations on your 20th anniversary! I hope that you allow youself to enjoy whatever you feel up to doing. We need to be kind to ourselves and remember that we are strong people or we wouldn't be doing this. The past choices are just that. A date is a date. It's for you to enjoy at your current level of ability. Not to please others by bearing up through something you find difficult. Regarding the jaw/teeth situation, I really recommend a bite guard at night. There are different kinds, and not as uncomfortable as you might think. A dentist told me they protect your teeth and gums because grinding (I've been a grinder for years) can be hard on the enamel and even gums. Also you might find less pain in your jaw and/or headaches if you get those. That's been true for me.

Now. I pasted builder's statement because I don't want to be braining and worrying over all the posts I have to wade through about how hard that last 3, 4, 5, or whatever mg were to taper off of. OK fine. That may be my reality too when I get there, and I'm ready for it. But this gives me another perspective. What you believe is what you create. What you focus on is what you attract. Yeah, I read a great deal about all your difficulties and have posted support for many. We need both sides. HM

Oh Gosh - HM - Sorry if I said something offensive - I'm pretty new to the board and have PM'ed with other newbies that are scared to death - (that they will have worse case scenerios) - People in the best possible scenarios if there is such a thing with Benzo's ; Those who found this board and better tapering methods BEFORE trying too quickly with their Dr (like me)

Bc I do personally know people who have come off these drugs relatively easily - I simply thought it was worth throwing out there for new people who are scared....... No one is discounting anyone else's struggles or pain - I have been through pure hell bc my Dr didn't know enough - Had I found this forum a long time ago - who knows - maybe I could have gone slow enough and made it to the other side virtually unscathed as well - that's all I was trying to do - Offer some confidence to those that are just trying for the first time -

Tapering diazepam and run into serious withdrawl for about a month now so have been holding.    Having a few more relief windows in the last two days, but still far from stable.  Considering updosing, but not sure so still holding.

Just wondering if anyone can share updosing after holding this long (month or more) and had it help stabalize them.  Were you then able to get back down okay?  So many say never updose and I'm scared about the kindling.  Any expeirence out there with updosing after a long hold and it working?  I'm 56 and got some other health issues as well.

I got abandoned by my doctor 2 days ago.  I went with all of her recommendations for tapering and they were too fast as well as not an equivalent cross over.  After a month of serious withdrawl, I questioned her on the taper plan.  She said, she does this all the time and has never had a patient in withdrawl more then a month.  By then they are always ready to make a cut.  Its impossible she said.  All of her patients would be off the drug by now.  She doesn't understand why I am having so much trouble and she has been in practice 35 years.  So when I asked her if I could still updose at this point to stabalize she said she did not know what would happen and maybe I should talk to a addiction specialist.  She doesn't know how to help me.

Great!! What to do now?  Amazing how one can start on such a small dose of something and end up 7 months later still trying to get off the darn thing and incapacitated to boot.

Hi Fight,

You didn't say or do anything wrong and there is no need to apologize for anything you said. We all have our own unique experiences, thoughts, voyages, etc. Likewise, we all have the right to express and offer up these things on these boards. Some have easier tapers. Some have more difficult tapers. We just all need to remember that there is no "one cure fits all".

All the best,

Ed

Thank you! I haven't even left the house yet since the vertigo started (I've been free of it for two whole days now btw, fingers crossed and knock on wood that it stays gone!) so maybe I am being a little ambitious. I keep picturing it though and it sounds so nice. I think I will just wait and decide on the day. The other option is to watch romantic movies together and order takeout from our favorite local restaurant. Somehow that feels not good enough for a 20th anniversary, but hey, it's what we do most of the time anyway! Lol. I will make it a nice and enjoyable day/night no matter what. And I've taken the day off so that's a bonus!

I've been thinking about a night guard, thank you for the info! I've never had this issue before though with the jaw tightness, so I'm hoping the TMJ type situation is just during WDs and that it'll pass. But I'm overdue to see the dentist so it's something I'll be having checked soon enough. My mom does have TMJ so it might just be in the cards for me.

If you look at the failed Ativan taper portion of my signature, that part that was total chaos was after an updose. I was hospitalized for a couple of days for emergency surgery and they would not cut my Ativan into quarters as I was doing, so I had to updose by a quarter of a tablet. Then they gave me a dose of Valium before the surgery. I went right back down when I got home and before long I was having derealization and depersonalization. Worst days of my life. Then I crossed over to Valium and the rest is history.

I don't really have advice because everyone is different, but for me personally, I'd never updose again. I would absolutely hold for however long was necessary even though I haven't done that yet and I pray I won't have to. It's also worth noting that a cut sometimes relieves the symptoms that are plaguing you. My symptoms are a brand new set at every cut, without fail, and sometimes knowing that I'm about to shift to a new set of symptoms is enough of a relief for me. Of course sometimes they're worse! But everything eventually passes or changes.

Your doctor sounds a lot like mine. I'm sorry you had to go through that. My old doc basically did abandon me right at the time I posted about above. This new one is super positive and supportive but he firmly believes that you can taper relatively quickly and that WD never lasts more than 30 days. He told me that I'd need to see a psychiatrist if I ran into problems with my taper and I don't exactly blame him because they really are watching the docs close with benzos nowadays and its not really a primary doc's place to be overseeing a taper. He basically did me a favor by continuing to prescribe what my previous doctor put me on without sending me to a pdoc to get it. But he motivated me to get off of it and to be more brave than I'd have been otherwise. I actually thanked him for pushing me to go a little faster than I'd planned. If it had backfired on me, it would have been a different story, but it turned out he was right.

I went off on a tangent there which I will blame on my benzo brain. My point was just to share my experience with updosing and to say I'm so sorry that you went through that with your doctor. It's a tough decision to make but in any case, take extra good care of yourself and don't be hard on yourself about any of this. It doesn't matter how long it takes to get there or how difficult it is, because eventually we'll be free of it all and these times will be just a memory.

I say ditto,on the night guard S and P. I never had issues before, but I clench and grind my teeth since my taper. You can pick up a cheap night guard at the pharmacy, or if you are willing to pay a little more, you can get one custom fit by the dentist, it's easy they just take impressions of your teeth and then make it. I've been happy with mine. I've heard of people on the boards breaking teeth, so you should definitely get something!

Well, I'm one who disagrees with that philosophy.

Withdrawal sxs occur when you lower your  dose more quickly than the body can adapt. In short, you body needs more of the med to be stable.  So you can 1) wait (hold") until your body adjusts the lower dose (and suffer while you wait), or 2) you can increase the dose.

I had some significant sxs when I was at 3.5mg.  I held for 2 weeks, with no improvement, so I did a small updose to 3.7, and was OK again after about 5 days.

During my 3 unsuccessful attempts to get below 9mg when I was doing C&H, when my sxs were unbearable and unrelenting, each time I went back up to 9mg, and my sxs resolved.

And updosing will NOT cause kindling.

Wow, builder, so updosing even just a little can help stabilize?  And then when you reduced after updosing, what prevented the same thing from happening again?  Going slower down? And did you do a microtaper in water?    Thanks.

Than what causes kindling?

Are micro tapers likely to result in this ACUTE I'm hearing about.  I would love to hear from micro taperers that had no acute at the end.

Head over to Success Stories. There are sure to be positive experiences detailed over there.

Best,

Ed

Kindling is the result of repeated withdrawals from psychoactive drugs.  In spite of all the horror stories posted here, it really pretty uncommon.  FWIW, I CT'd off of mega-doses of alcohol probably 6-8 times, and I had no kindling.

A slow taper is likely to result in zero "acute" sxs.  I had zero sxs below 3 mg, jumpedat 5mg, and had no residual sxs at all.
