I'm glad you are getting checked for sleep apnea.  It can cause all kinds of symptoms yet is treatable without drugs.

No, best not to take any kind of sleep aid if you suspect sleep apnea. Yes, that's also probably what is causing the wakeups, so once you get this diagnosed and treated, you'll  sleep much better.
