augmentin - antibiotic is this bad for benzo w/d?

Recommended Posts

Hey All,

Just wondering if Augmentin is one of those "bad antibiotics" to take when trying to recover from benzos..?

I started taking it last night, and I've had a headache ever since..?

If anyone knows anything about it, please let me know!

Thanks a lot!

I was prescribed augmentin in February when I was only 7 months out, it did set me back a bit but only in terms of inner buzzing/vibrating. Immediately after taking a pill I would feel as if I was plugged in  :D But that's it really.

I don't know for sure if it was the Augmentin, but I had a horrible week after taking it. It may have been a coincidence, but I've felt better since I stopped taking it.

This is from the Ashton manual...

Antibiotics, for some reason, sometimes seem to aggravate

withdrawal symptoms. However, one class of antibiotics, the

quinolones, actually displace benzodiazepines from their binding

sites on GABA-receptors. These can precipitate acute withdrawal in

people taking or tapering from benzodiazepines. It may be

necessary to take antibiotics during benzodiazepine withdrawal but

if possible the quinolones should be avoided. (There are at least 6

different quinolones - ask your doctor if in doubt).

Here is the list of the fluorquinolone list from BB:

Augmentin is not a fluroquinolone.  Though, listen to your body's response.  If you are responding, then think of getting a new prescription.

If you can take penicillin, go for Amoxicillin or Keflex.  If you cannot take penicillin, go for Erythromycin.  Stay away from all z-drugs, they are too powerful and create problems.

Doctors will get their noses out of joint when you stick with only the above, but remember, it is YOUR body.  Stick to your guns with this, and insist only the safe ones above I listed.
