titrate from large Valium dose

[rh...]

Recommended Posts

I am currently at 23.5mg. Valium and was wondering how I would titrate daily and hopefully make it more manageable (if possible) and how long would it take for me to be done. I started at 30mg. V and cut 1mg. every 7 days and it caught up to me, so I held for 23 days and decided to cut .5 every 10 days. I have 10, 5, and 2mg. pills. I'm sure my doctor would prescribe liquid Diazepam, but it would take a while before I could see him.

Is it more manageable at a 1% cut each day and how long of a taper? I am really looking for someone who has experience in this and can help me with this.

All inputs are appreciated very much :smitten:

Also, I am dosing 3 times a day, keeping my nightime dose the highest because I haven't been sleeping very well.

Thank you very much,

rhapsodygirl

I started @ 40 mg V and am now at 14 mg and got slammed so I empathize.  I was cutting 1 mg every 14 days and then went to .5 every 7 days, which is the equivilant of 1 every two weeks.  But once I hit 14mg and some life circumstances changed, even .5 every 7 days was too much.  I'm not sure how much help I can be since I just started titration a few days ago, but this is what I'm doing.  Of the options for liquid titration I think the liquid from the pharmacy is easiest, but if you are interested in other alternatives I'm sure there will be others who will chime in.

I get the 5mg = 5 ml dose of diazepam.  That simply means 1 ml of the liquid is equal to 1 mg of valium/diazepam.  The liquid comes in both brand (Valium) and generic (Diazepam). I'm already taking generic pills and the liquid diazepam is much cheaper, but if you prefer brand, that's available also.  I take all of my dose in pill form except 1 mg, which is what I'm titrating with.

I've heard that you may be able to cut more with less consequenses if you cut daily instead of weekly or every two weeks.  So I'm actually trying to stay with 1 mg every two weeks.  But that either means you have to know your math or dilute some of the mixture with water (also requires math but not as much) so instead of cutting .1 ml a day for 10 days, I cut .1 ml a day for 14 days so it's a little smoother.  That's my hope anyway.

However there are other people here who are brilliant with schedules and help so I will leave that to them.  princezz has been a genuis in helping me figure this out.  healthybodyandmind has also taught me much.  Both have been increadibly helpful to me.

Good luck and like me, I hope your taper becomes smoother....

I am able to get into my doctor tomorrow to have him prescribe liquid Diazepam solution. I would use pills and liquid daily. I would like to do daily reductions, but I have no idea as to how to go about it. I am in the dark on this :idiot:. My brain is very foggy and my math is beyond horrible ???

I thank you so much WWWI for answering my post ;) I will write you soon my friend ;)

Maybe you should create a new post called "Need help with titrating liquid valium from large Valium dose".  If you can find princezz or any of her posts, she helped me figure out the math and helped me figure out the percentage of cuts I could handle.

Good luck

RG,

All my cuts have been different. They all were not 10% within 7-14 days.

I just cut what I felt like my body could handle.

Honestly, this really has nothing to do with an Advanced Math.

It is basically Rate, Percentage, and Duration.

I have helped many here with a plan, but honestly it's really how you feel, what you think you should cut, and you know what your body can handle.

:mybuddy:

Honestly, we are all different and no one can tell you exactly how to cut or calculate it up.. too many variables.

With Valium.. I think it isn't SO MUCH we feel the cut right away, it adds up because of the 1/2 life.

I know it is hard to sketch out a plan and go by it.

I tossed that away a long time ago and started listening to my body.

BUT, 10% is the rule of thumb.

Listen to your body.

As far as converting, that can be done.. but the Math and Titration/Tapering sometimes does not go hand and hand.

Stick with what works best for you as you taper.

:mybuddy:

Hang in there, Billy.

PS- I think you need to hold for a bit until stabilized.. what it sounds like to me.

Then start tapering down at your own rate.

I tried 10% every two weeks and it kicked my behind lol (was homebound).  For me my comfort zone is 5-7% every two weeks (slow but I can work that way). So you are absolutly right everyone is different.  I wish, like you have no idea, I could go faster but I just can't.  I also need a guide to go by, and modify as needed because as you said it doesn't catch up with you right away and I don't know what I'd do if I have no pattern and I get slammed.  I've lost so much already and am holding on to what little I have for dear life, so slow, constant and steady is my mantra lol.  And I absolutely agree with your (Billy's) suggestion to hold and stabalize.

Hi RG,

Well if you did 1% per day, that's a 100 day titration. You can choose to go slower of course. I probably would. 23.5mg is a lot of V to come off.

Say the doctor gives you 1mg / 1ml liquid, which seems to be the norm. Ask the pharmacist for a 1ml syringe. This tiny syringe will come divided into 100 parts. Each part is 0.01 of a ml.

You said you were getting rid of 1mg every 7 days. Every time you're working on 1mg, that's the part of your dose you'll take in liquid form. For example, now you're on 23.5mg. So you would take 23mg in pill form (two 10mg, one and a half 2mg pill). Then the remaining 0.5mg will come from 0.5ml of liquid. Remember 1mg equals 1ml in the syringe. So 0.5mg equals 0.5ml in the syringe.

Now, to get rid of 1mg every 7 days, you'll be getting rid of 1ml (or one syringe full) every 7 days. That's roughly 0.14ml (==>100 / 7<==) every day. So on the first day, you would take 23mg in pills and take 0.36ml (==> 0.5 - 0.14 <==) in liquid form. The following day you will go down another 0.14ml, so on the second day, take 23mg in pills and 0.22ml (==>0.5 - 0.14 - 0.14 <==) in liquid form. Third day - 23mg in pills and 0.08 in liquid form.

On the fourth day, dropping 0.14ml/mg will take you to 22.94mg V (==>23.08 - 0.14<==). Now you will take 22mg in pills (two 10mg, one 2mg) and 0.94ml liquid in the syringe.

Let me know if you understand the principle. If you do, then tell me the rate you want to go at in the future (e.g. 0.5mg every 7 days) and I can do a timetable for you.

Right now, this will take you 23.5 weeks to accomplish (165 days) During your titration you might find that using a liquid allows you to go at the same rate as dry cutting but more comfortably, so maybe you can continue 1mg per week?

I hear you, it kicked me in the but too.

I think with valium, we need to hold for a bit because it's like the cuts just catch up differently.

Everyone differs with it.

I understand RG not wanting to get slammed, so I say hold.

The valium is doable but it's 1/2 life is just unpredictable and everyone is different with that.

And 1mg per week is way too fast IMO.

But everyone is different.

I know I cut 15mg in three months and it didn't hit me until later on.   :tickedoff:

RG, I hope you do well with your tapering.

It's hard, but it can be done.

Billy.

I tried using Excel too, didn't work.

Thank you so much princezz ;) At the beginning of my taper, I was cutting 1mg. every 7 days, which was WAY too much and WAY too fast for me. I stabilized after a 23 day hold and decided to go with .5mg. every 10 days, which is half of what I was cutting, plus adding more time to stabilize. I really do need to be conservative with my taper because I was slammed so hard that I was basically nonfunctional.

Please bear with me because right now I have a massive headache :(  So, I would like to go with a longer taper as you suggested, perhaps longer than the 165 day.

I would like to reduce .5mg every 10 days, so if you could do a timetable for that then I can take it into my doctor tomorrow. What size is the Diazepam container?

Am I making any sense???? I don't quite understand the principle :idiot: :idiot:

You are a peach :smitten:

I agree that everyone is different. For me 1mg. per week was way too much for me and that is why I held for the 23 days to get stabilized, which I did, so I decided to go with .5mg. every 10 days. That is a 2% cut. I am stabilized, but I caught a cold last week that has kicked me in the butt ??? I am fragile and when I get sick it tends to hit me hard. I am going to make a .5mg. cut today. It's a small percentage, a far cry from 10%.

I realize there is no easy road no matter how you look at it, but I have learned to take it slow, and  I'm sure I'll have to make adjustments accordingly. I am like WWWI, I need a plan to go by and modify if need be.

Thank you so much,

RG

Not that that's necessarily a bad thing. Just a heads up

My hubby figured it out regarding the 470 days too. You are going to hate me for this, but could you figure out a schedule for .5mg. every 7 days? I apologize for being such a pain in the butt. ARGG!!!

Thank you so, so much,

RG

Here goes nothing. At 0.5mg every 7 days, you will reduce (0.5 / 7) = 0.07mg every day, taking a total of 335 days to get to 0.

It's very straightforward. The part before the decimal point is what you will take in pills. Here is a guide

Valium mg (part before the decimal point)

23 two 10mg pills + one and a half 2mg pills

22 two 10mg pills + one 2mg pill

21 two 10mg pills + half a 2mg pill

20 two 10mg pills

19 one 10mg pill + one 5mg pill + two 2mg pills

18 one 10mg pill + one 5mg pill + one and a half 2mg pills

17 one 10mg pill + one 5mg pill + one 2mg pill

16 one 10mg pill + one 5mg pill + half a 2mg pill

15 one 10mg pill + one 5mg pill

14 one 10mg pill + two 2mg pills

13 one 10mg pill + one and a half 2mg pills

12 one 10mg pill + one 2mg pill

11 one 10mg pill + half a 2mg pill

10 one 10mg pill

9 one 5mg pill + two 2mg pills

8 one 5mg pill + one and a half 2mg pills

7 one 5mg pill + one 2mg pill

6 one 5mg pill + half a 2mg pill

5 one 5mg pill

4 two 2mg pills

3 one and a half 2mg pills

2 one 2mg pill

1 half a 2mg pill

0 no pills

The part after the decimal point is the liquid you'll draw out using your syringe.

So for example, on day 1, you will take 23.43mg of V. First, figure out how to get 23 (this is the part before the decimal). That's two 10mg pills + one and a half 2mg pills. Then the part after the decimal is 43. You'll dip your syringe into the liquid and draw out 0.43ml. If it's a 1ml syringe divided into 100 little parts, you'll be drawing to the 43rd little part. Drink that much.

And that's it for the first day.

On the second day, you take 23.36mg. Again, take 23 in pills. Then draw out 0.36ml with the syringe and take that.

When you get to day 8, you will take 22.94mg of V. So figure out how to get 22 (the part before the decimal), which is two 10mg pills + one 2mg pill. Then dip your syringe into the liquid and draw out 0.94ml. (94 is the part after the decimal)

You see?

For this to work, you have to ask your doctor for a 1mg/ml Valium solution.

Dear princezz,

I am forever grateful to you and for you. How in the world do you do that? It's definitely a special gift you have . I will take this into my doctor tomorrow and I will let you know how it goes.

You truly are amazing, and I do thank you from the bottom of my heart for doing this for me. Have a good evening.

Love,

RG
