Knackered Smells with Benzos

Hey there, Knackered here.  Our sense of smell can carry us to distant places and forgotten times.  It can instantly remind us of people we’ve known and things we’ve done, be they good or bad.  It can gross us out or give us a feeling of security and calm.  For what it’s worth, smells and odors are likely the driving forces that lead us to accept or reject a person, place or experience.

The more we use our nose, the stronger it gets.  Today, the sense of smell can determine everything from wine choice to the kind of residence we’ll accept as a living space.  Sight, of course, is important.  But if it smells bad, we’ll send it packing or get out of there as fast as we can.

It can be deceiving.  If we’re around certain odors long enough, we lose the ability to be aware of them.  Having someone tell you that your breath is bad or a significant other pointing out your body odor is the height of humility.  Breath mints and deodorant are among the most advertised and widely sold products on the market today.

Scent can be seductive and evocative, reminding us of people and things long forgotten or sadly missed.  We can try to copy the scents of others or introduce our own signature odor to brand our name and make others remember us.

More and more today, odor or scent as it is more favorably called, is used as a form of therapy.  Humans have used aromatherapy for thousands of years.  Plant components in resins balms, and oils have been used for medical and religious purposes.

Oils can be applied to the skin, placed in some sort of a diffuser or burned in the form of incense.  The effect can serve as a distraction or give our home an ambience that completely changes mood and makes an event memorable.

Combined with exercise or meditation, scents can transport us from an undesired mood to a place of well being.  These types of experiences serve to mask the pain and effects of ongoing suffering and emotional unrest that are inherent in what all of us here face every moment of every day.

The cost of this type of distraction is usually within the means of most of us.  Products can be purchased on line and delivered directly to our door, eliminating the need to go anywhere.  Keeping them readily at hand, we can access them easily when things start to sour or waves are at their worst.

Remember however that scent is a very personal thing.  What arouses or calms someone may be offensive or off putting to another.  Diffusers, colognes and such, used in public places often prove to be too much for others who might be sensitive to their effects.  Use them wisely and when in doubt, question others who may turn from good company into reluctant or non-returning guests.

My comfort scents - Lavender, Sandalwood, White Sage, Tiger Balm (a strange one, I know), and I just ordered a new essential oil called 'Guardian Angel' which is an affordable version of the coveted White Angelica which has a hefty price tag.  I plan on making my own perfume with Organic Argan Oil with it.

Great topic!
