Amitriptyline help

Doc started me on 5mg amitriptyline for nerve pain and sleep.  After 4 days he said to go to 10mg, I was on 10 for 9 days when he said I should get off due to side effects of overwhelming daytime fatigue and increased heart rate.  He said to go back to 5mg for a week, then try 2.5 for a week.  I have now taken 5mg for 4 days, 10 mg for 10days and back to 5 for 4 days now, for a total use of about 3 weeks. Wondering if I should try to just stop before I habituate to it.
