Christmas and Holiday Distraction Thread

Henry is hilarious. I wish he could come over to my house, but the pic is the next best thing.

This is my recipe for Cheese Straws, beloved by Holiday hostesses in the U.K. because they can be whipped up very quickly. and they are cheap to make. Bang for a buck.

3 oz flour

Pinch of salt and pinch of cayenne pepper

Pinch of dry mustard.  I use Colmans imported but you can substitute  a tiny half tsp of grey poupon

1 and 1 half oz butter

2 oz grated sharp cheddar cheese

Half an egg yolk

A little water

Pre-heat oven to 400 F.

Grease baking tray

Mix together flour and seasonings

Rub in the butter, and then lightly rub in the grated cheese

Mix with the beaten egg yolk and add just enough water to give a smooth fairly stiff dough. Mix well

Roll the dough out thinly on a lightly floured board. Cut into thin narrow 'Straws' of even thickness and length. About 4 inches long is good.

Bake for about 5-7 minutes. Watch carefully as they can burn easily. They should look golden brown and be firm.

These can be served hot or cold.

They are lovely for a 'Drink's' party.

I gotta learn how to upload and share personal pics on here...I love this, D it reminds me of my own dog. He reaches for the sky like that, too. SO CUTE!! I just want to eat him up, he's so sweet sometimes! He's spoiled rotten and I wouldn't have it any other way.

OMG, WBB...I love this baby. I think my little/big Prince, (his first mommy named him this after Prince's death), needs a baby sister to play with. This little girl looks perfect! Westies are precious!! Thanks for the share.

When you have beaten the egg yolk you can halve the amount easily. I very often double the recipe as I hate to waste the unused yolk. My aunt used to bake huge batches of these at a time. I was allowed to help and I could eat as many as I wanted. She made fantastic savouries. Another favourite was little puffed pastry shells stuffed with shrimp in a lobster sauce.

I love that movie.

I also love British. Christmas crackers. Funny hats and joky little toys. The really expensive ones have some good stuff in them, as well as being very pretty.

Not sure.

I get the Anzac hat and the steering wheel seems to be on what you Yanks call 'The wrong Side'. The face looks familiar with that lovely pouty look, almost Bowie like. This one is driving me NUTS. What is it ??????

Is that plum pudding? If so my husband's mother used to make it every Christmas and we'd have hard sauce with it but there was no alcohol in it. She got the recipe from her husband's parents who were from England and Scotland.

Gotta have brandy in that hard sauce, and brandy is what ignites the flames on the pud.

As a child i was always stuffed at the end of the first course of turkey and all the trimmings, then I had to choose between Christmas pudding and sherry trifle. I used to take a bit of both. We always had small silver trinkets and silver sixpences hidden and baked into in the pudding. The French love a Christmas log, which is a very rich cake iced with butter cream and then,  rolled into a log, which is iced and decorated. Ooh la la.
