Tappering .5 Xanax after long time use

I have a Dr appointment tommorow.. should I ask about possibly getting valium to cross over from xanax? Or is it to risky at this point?

 

If not what other benzo could I about  ?

Librium is another good benzo for tapering.  It has an extra long half life like Valium.

I think I'm going to hold now.. I don't want to rush this and currently I did achieve about 20% but I do realize it was to fast. I see some signs that I should hold.

 

Just got back from doctors and I told him I'm tapering off xanax .. he looked at me with a funny face.. he said your only taking. 5 mg .. I said I know but I have been for a long time..  he said well just start taking .25 and then stop lol ... serious I can't make this up.. Young Dr which shocked me because I thought he would be open to new ideas ?

I stopped tapering and just went to 4.14 today.

 

I know what many have said but do I need to go back up? Please help.

If I knew this is should have stayed on the .5 xanax can I stop the progression of this? I thought I was going slow enough and have been 4.16ml since I last posted.

 

I planned on going very slow.  But it could be 2 years before I'm off xanax completely.  I would have to deal with this progressively getting worse??

 

I read you should only taper one med at a time. I decided this rather then the ssri.

 

This is proving to be difficult and maybe a mistake

I would hold for awhile. Tinnuitus is very common in tapers. If that is your only sxs , you are very lucky indeed. Do not fear the ringing because it will go away in time. I would not up dose just to get rid of the ringing. It will negate any progress you have made. Tell yourself over and over that it will get better and don't focus on it any more than you have to.

Thank you .. unfortunately I panicked and didn't know what to do so I Reinstated my original dosage.. I screwed myself big time I guess. I'll be visiting my psy Dr tommorow.. should I ask for a different benzo so it will be easier when I start to taper again?

 

I'm hesitate now anyway because I'm going to be trying a new ssri to maybe alieve my current eye pain. I assume startup of a new ssri will cause increased anxiety

I take a ssri(celexa) and a ssni (mirtazipine) without a problem

Understandable but when I started a few other ssri'swap in the past such as Prozac I had increased anxiety. I will be trying lexapro this weekend.

  It's very common for any SSRI to cause anxiety, at least at the beginning.

Well, it's pretty generally acknowledged that Valium is the easiest benzo to withdraw from.  And Ashton strongly believed in switching to Valium to taper.

 

It's a comparatively low potency benzo, has a long half-life which in itself makes withdrawing more tolerable, and is availble in low dose tablets (2mg).  Its also available as an Rx liquid.

I'm thinking xanax may have a part in my eye pain. When I went back up from the .414 to .5 the pain is substantially higher.

Go get a Glaucoma check-up fast.  Benzo's have been known to amplify glaucoma (eye fluid pressure).  Ativan and Xanax are the worst two offenders.

I have had extensive testing in the last past 5 months

My right eye shows signs of glaucoma on all the computer tests but I can see fine. Doctors said I was probably born like this. My visual field test was aweful for my right eye. I've also had an mri,neurological opthamologist,retinal specialist also a glacoma specialist.

I wouldn't swap it out. 

I used and tapered Xanax.  I'm not sure what's going on with your taper, but would like to help if I can.

My eyes currently burn and are sore. I have tried 3 different ssri's at very low dosages. All ssri's that gave me no issues in the past. The one constant is xanax I have fluctuated going up and down and now wonder if xanax could be causing my eye pain. Max I have went was. 750 but now stay at .5 doctors can't figure out what's causing the eye pain.

 

I wanted to try something for a few days to rule out xanax? It the one thing that's basically stayed the same .
