"The Arrow and the Song"  By Henry Wadsworth Longfellow

I shot an arrow into the air,

It fell to earth, I knew not where;

For, so swiftly it flew, the sight

Could not follow it in its flight.

I breathed a song into the air,

It fell to earth, I knew not where;

For who has sight so keen and strong,

That it can follow the flight of song?

Long, long afterward, in an oak

I found the arrow, still unbroke;

And the song, from beginning to end,

I found again in the heart of a friend.

The Mighty Oak

A mighty wind blew night and day,

It stole the oak tree's leaves away,

then snapped its boughs

and pulled its bark

until the oak was tired and stark.

But still the oak tree held its ground

while other trees fell all around...

The weary wind gave up and spoke,

"How can you still be standing, Oak?"

The oak tree said, "I know that you

can break each branch of mine in two,

carry every leaf away,

shake my limbs, and make me sway.

But I have roots stretched in the earth,

growing stronger since my birth.

You'll never touch them, for your see,

they are the deepest part of me.

Until today, I wasn't sure

of just how much I could endure.

But now I've found, with thanks to you,

I'm stronger than

I ever knew."

Especially now,

try to remember

that you're stronger

than any problem

you encounter

or any disappointment

life will bring.

Thinking of you, believing in you, caring for you.

Thanks, abcd and Ins and everyone else! I just listened to Jason Mraz's "I Won't Give Up" again. It's such a gorgeous song that I don't think I could tire of it. I think I'll do a little more music therapy this evening and look for some diversions to heal my broken spirit. Thank goodness the day is almost over....perhaps there's a better one coming tomorrow.

Sending good wishes to all for a peaceful, healing night,

Your pal,

Lapis

Just listening to Mavis Staples sing "Hard Times Come Again No More".

Soulful. The woman's voice is bursting with emotion. Love her.

And thanks once again, Ins. Your heart is big, and there seems to be much love bursting out of it. :-)

Lapis, I absolutely LOVE this song, and no one sings it like Mavis does!

What a voice; what a performer.

Thank you, for your kind words, my friend.

Thank you, for posting this!

Hugs, Ins :smitten:

Then I'll share my all-time favourite version of the song:

The voices are phenomenal! Many are from over-the-pond, but there are some Canadians (McGarrigles, Rufus Wainright), plus the inimitable Emmylou Harris from the US. So moving.

Here's another rendition of Stephen Foster's great song as performed by James Taylor  with Yo-Yo Ma

James Taylor could sing the phone book, and I'd love it! That voice....

And Yo-Yo Ma on cello...lovely combo.

I agree about James Taylor, and I love cello.

Here's one for you:

You know? It's amazing to know there are such caring, understanding people out there. Thank you so much for that. I'm trying, but it's been SOOOOO long, just so long. I really need it to end soon so that I can feel at least a bit of comfort and peace. I know you understand, as do all the people on this web forum.

Thank you for reaching out.

YOU KNOW LAPIS,

I SAID VERY SIMILAR WORDS TO INSM TODAY. SOME DAYS IT JUST SEEMS LIKE IT WILL TAKE FOREVER, AND WE GET DISCOURAGED; HOWEVER, WE HAVE TO BELIEVE THAT WE WILL GET THRU THIS, AND COME OUT WHOLE ON THE OTHER SIDE.

WE ARE LUCKY...WE HAVE FRIENDS HERE WHO TRULY CARE ABOUT US, AND ARE WILLING TO LISTEN WHEN WE NEED TO TALK, OFFER COMPASSION WHEN WE ARE LOOSING OUR WAY, MAKE US LAUGHT TO HELP BRIGHTEN A GLOOMY DAY, AND HELP US THRU NOT ONLY THE TOUGH DAYS, BUT ALL THE OTHER DAYS THAT COME IN BETWEEN.

I HOPE YOUR FEELING BETTER, AND REMEMBER YOU ARE NOT ALONE!

HUGS AND FRIENDSHIP TO YOU,

FLUTER :smitten:

Maybe I need to read some Success Stories and listen to some good music and think of everyone else out there who's pushing onwards.

LAPIS,

I'M NOT A 100% SUCCESS STORY. I AM HOWEVER A WORK IN PROGRESS.  I AM NO WHERE NEAR FINISHING MY TAPER, AND I LIKE YOU HAVE MY BAD DAYS. IT HELPS ME SO MUCH TO COME HERE AND SEE MY FRIENDS, AND READ THE QUOTES, AND LAUGH WITH YOU ALL.

TODAY, I HAD A SUCCESS. I HAVE FELT BAD ALL DAY (SORE THROAT, NAUSEA, BLURRY VISION, HEADACHE, BURNING EYES THAT FELT LIKE THEY WANT TO POP OUT OF MY FACE).  WELL, TONIGHT MY OLDEST DAUGHTER WAS INDUCTED INTO THE NATIONAL HONORS SOCIETY, AND I WENT TO THE CEREMONY, AND I SAT IN A ROOM FULL OF PEOPLE AND LISTENED TO A SPEECH AND THAN WATCHED WHILE 28 MEMBERS WERE PINNED AND RECEIVED THERE CERTIFICATES.  THAN, I TOOK MY DAUGHTER'S TO DINNER AT THE OUTBACK STEAK HOUSE.  THIS WAS HUGE, AND I WILL CONSIDER THIS A SUCCESS :)

IT WAS RANDOM, AND I THINK THAT IS HOW IT STARTS HAPPENING. WE CYCLE IN AND OUT.  TODAY YOU HAD A BAD DAY, BUT LETS HOPE TOMORROW IS A BETTER DAY....

BLESSINGS,

FLUTER :smitten:
