And this one has been on heavy rotation in my place recently. It's Elton John's (Live in New York) 2004 version of "Levon" with a full band, orchestra and rockin' choir. I can never get sick of this one! I also listen to the MUCH earlier version (1971) where Elton's voice is a few octaves higher and stunning. Gives me shivers!

Amazing, Lapsy.  If I'm not mistaken, his voice changed quite dramatically after his throat surgery, wasn't it?  I think in the 80s.

Omigosh, abcd, I had no idea that he had surgery! I just looked it up, and yes, indeed, he had surgery to remove polyps which permanently changed his voice. He's such an awesomely talented man, and I love both the past and present Eltons. He and Bernie Taupin have given us so many beautiful songs to enjoy over the years.

Yes, it was a shame, it was a very noticeable change unfortunately.  Brilliant songwriting duo, Elton and Bernie, I agree.
