Warning Others

Hi I just wanted to report this incident.

I posted on my facebook about the dangers of flouroquinolones.  This is one of the most important pieces of information that I picked up here on Benzo Buddies.  They are bad for us on benzos, but they can also affect people not on benzos.  They are a last line of defense anti-biotic, but they are being widely misprescribed as a first line treatment.

So I focused on that, I even found a NY times article about the dangers of them.  I figured, there is a high liklihood of people being prescribed this.  Anyway, I posted the warning, along with the NY times article.  Maybe about a month ago.

Last night I got a message from a woman who went to my high school.  I don't know her very well, nor was I friends with her in H.S.  But anyway, she said she brought her 11 year old daughter to a doctor for a facial rash.  He prescribed Cipro.  She said she trusted her doctor.  This is an enormous problem, people trust doctors unquestioningly.  We want to trust doctors.  They are doctors.  We don't go to medical school.  We think they know better.  This is an extremely common feeling that is deeply ingrained in us, but people have to wake up and realize that doctors are influenced by drug companies, and not all of them are as concerned and caring as they should be.

So she gave Cipro to her young daughter.  It is plainly stated that Cipro is not to be given to children under 18.  Doctors should know this.  They should also understand that flouroquinolones are last line of defense anti-biotics, but many of them don't.

She said her daughter was not feeling well on the Cipro, and she said the article I posted was bothering her in the back of her mind.  So after four days of giving her child the Cipro, she took her instead to a pediatrition, who was horrified that the child had been given Cipro.  He took her off it.

Anyway, it made me feel good that someone heeded my warning.  One of the best things we can do is warn people about what we know.

Hi Marian...

Good for you!   This is how the word gets out, and this is how everyone on this site are able to inform and educate others.  Just think how you have helped that family.

Yes we must warn people every chance we get. Some people wont listen because they think doctors know everything, and that the FDA is protecting us,but I will continue to warn.

Just my experience, to be taken for what it's worth.

Last year when I first started having benzo withdrawal symptoms, I did not yet know why I was sick. By coincidence, I got an infection and was put on Cipro. What followed was three trips to the ER and a one night stay in the psych ward. I saw many specialists, none of whom helped. Each one washed his hands of me when he tested his particular specialty and pronounced me healthy.

The medical profession let me down because it was left up to me to diagnose my own problem - which I did months later. It was my access to the Internet in general, and benzo buddies in particular, that finally put me on the path to recovery.
