Hi eastcoast,

The same happened to me, like you are stating.  This is what finally worked:

1 - Cursor on "http" bar, upper left.

2 - Right click only..  Do "NOT" highlight

3 - Choices appear, select COPY

You then can have this link just follow you, and place it in a message or reply anywhere.  The same applies for any website.

4 - When you want to post it Right click & select Paste

This is what should occur:

http://www.benzobuddies.org/forum/index.php?topic=73222.0

I had the same problem you did.  For some reason, everytime I would highlight the http.. I only had "select all"...  Through alot of help from a bb and trying and trying... I forgot to highlight and it worked.  I was so  :tickedoff: :tickedoff: :tickedoff: and frustrated.. I truly know the feeling.

Give the above a go, see if it works that way for you.  Just remember, don't highlight!  Post and let us know if it worked.  I'm keeping my fingers crossed for you and hope to see a big smiley face!!  Good luck!

Here's a youtube video on how to copy and paste.

There are lots of other videos on how to do all sorts of things on your computer.

It's easier to show you how to do some things than to describe the procedure in words, so videos are better.

Redevan thank you. Im not mentally able to check the videos out yet, but will at hopefully some point soon.

Hi eastcoast...  Welcome to the club... I'm the same.  I had a wonderful bbs, like you also, though they know how to do it, and it just made me a wreck trying to figure this out.  Then low and behold, it worked.  So, this comptr limited person will try to step you through it so simply... I ended up the same with you.  So here we go.

If you are reading this, you are on your thread (postr).  Look at the very left top of your screen.  Do you see the (http bar)?  Go up to it with your pointer (cursor), right click on it..  When you right click on it, you should see choices.  Do you see copy?  If yes, left click on that..  Then where ever you go on to the site... this link will follow you.  When you want to transfer that link... Just right click and bango it appears.

The buddie who helped me.. was a gem... I had to go through this several times, put it into simple terms without getting stressed, and printed it out... Then it worked.  You'll get it..  I've been so embarrassed being such a comptr dummy... I'm older to.  But, guess what.. being on this site has really helped me learn, and the bbs have been great!

Hope this helps!

Pattylu

No, didnt work. Whe you put the cursor on the http thing, is there someplace special to put the cursor? When I select copy, how do you get it to move down on the screen???? This is awful.

Hi eastcoast...

Thought about this all afternoon, hoping it would work for you.

As mentioned, I had the same problem, but that was with my previous laptop that crashed.

My new laptop, it worked just fine.

It's something with how all is programmed.

I'll call my computer guy tomorrow and run it by him, see if he can give "us" some help, so I can help you.

Hang in there!

Nothing I try works. This is an older IBM, is that the problem???

Other questions:

When I have to walk away from the computer, it shuts off very quickly. I dont mean it turns totally off, but I get my screen saver, then have to click on "one owner program running" or something like that. I do know where the "control panel" is, but how do you make the darn machine wait longer????

If you can get it to "copy" you should then be able to get it to "paste" wherever you want it to.

If you highlight something and then do a right mouse click do you get a "copy" option. If so select copy. If you don't get a copy option try looking at the very top of your screen. You should see a "toolbar" which has things like "file", "edit" etc. Highlight the text and then take your cursor up to the "edit" option. Left click and you should see a "copy" option. Click on it.

Now that you've got the text "copied", go to where ever to want it to "follow" you. Click your cursor into where ever you want it copied, and then do a right mouse click and select "paste". If you don't get a "paste" option, do the same thing you did before. Go up to the "edit" option, click on it and select "paste", and bingo. Hopefully it should paste.

Diaz,

OK that worked after some trying.

Heres one that isnt working yet. Lets say I want to give someone the address of BB. I see it up in the left side of the screen.

I can copy it, but what I get is the exact page Im on, like THIS page.

You are so nice, trying to put all this into words for me. Thank you.

Hi Eastcoast and others,

Ok, there can be a difference between the address bar and normal text on the screen.

What you really need here is the concept of it all.

The first thing to do is tell the computer what you are interested in.

There are a few ways to do this, usually a left click or a left drag will hilight things.

In the case of the address bar, it is sometimes fully hilighted already, so you can just copy it without having to drag hilight it.

If you go there and just left click without moving, then right click and select copy should do it.

Copy, cut, paste, are the things to do with what you've selected or hilighted.

There are keyboard shortcuts to do these basic things, and they save heaps of time.

Control-a (hold control down while pressing A) will hilight all of what your mouse is sitting on.

control-x cuts, control-c copies, and control-v pastes the text you coppied to the place where your mouse is, providing it's a writable area. If it's text that you can only read such as a web page text, it won't paste.

It it's a text file or an edit box like where I'm typing this, then you can paste into it.

Cut has similar rules where you can't cut text that is only readable.

Hilighting and selecting are considdered the same thing, so if you've selected a bit of text and then you right click, you do not use select all, that will grab everything. You go streight to copy.

An easy way to grab an address from the address bar is to press f4 then control-c.

I just did that, and now if I press control v, this happens.

There you go, Hope this de-confuses things a bit,

Cheers:

Let's say you want to copy the title/link of this thread above:

place the mouse over it and an underline appears

right click

a "box" of black dots appears around the title of the thread

press "copy shortcut"

go to wherever you want to insert the link

position the cursor

right click

press "paste"

the working link will be copied there

Hope this works for you!

I'm glad that worked for you.....it took me a while to figure it out, too.

I'm doing alright but now have bronchitis--nothing unusual for me but I'll be glad when I feel better.  I think withdrawal has affected my immune system but not in a good way.

Yes, Ive read some stuff about withdrawal affecting the immune system but I dont understand it yet.

All the Benzo Years, I resisted learning about the computer. Its now quite shocking to realize how little I know, and how hard it is for me to learn anything new....Im like a little baby, learning how to walk.

I keep this thread going because of how long its taking me to learn. If I get overwwhelmed (which is often-) I have to set it aside, maybe for days, and return when I feel more confidant. I really appreciate all the ideas and suggestions.

Oh! Ok, that worked!

But, say I want to give someone the address of BB, up in the address bar thing?

Thanks!

Hows your cold? I just read a post about it....was worried youre taking both aspirin and ibuprofen.

east

To give someone a link to BenzoBuddies, just do the same procedure with the title (big blue letters) upper left.  It will look like this after you "paste" it :

I dont think I was clear. Say Im emailing a non BB friend and want to give her BBs addy. How could I do that, without laboriously copying in down by hand and typing it in? Is that even possible?

Or - say I want someone to read a particular article Ive found on the 'Net. How would I give my friend the addy?

Okay, I understand what you're saying. The easiest thing would be to go to BB's main page, the one where you see the titles of all the different sections, and copy and paste the address link that is at the top of the page. That will give the other person the link to the main board, and not any particular page.

This would also work for any other link you wanted to send. Just go to the particular site you want to pass on to someone, then copy and paste the address link. Hopefully that's sorted out your problem.
