Kevin Costner ... drool ... how could I have forgotten him?

Hey M., you could ask the mods to change the thread title.

Ok, for Candy, how about a real old time name?  Lana Turner. She was old, but still very glamorous in the 1980's. She was signing her autobiography in the store I worked at. I was 2nd in line to get her autograph. I had purchased an exquisite red rose for her, I think I had read somewhere that she loved being given red roses, anyway......she was kind of blah, not "real" at all. When I gave her the rose she way over acted, pretending to be OVERWHELMED with the gesture, demanding her minion fetch a crystal vazzzzzz to put it in. She got all fake teary eyed and thanked me. Eh - I went about my work day not even thinking about her.

At the end of the day I got into the elevator to leave.  A beautiful young man who worked as a valet joined me and he had one hand behind his impressive back. Did I mention I had a huge crush on the guy, but he was dating a gf of mine. Anyway, he was all blushy as he told me that he had just escorted Ms. Turner to her hotel and she FLIRTED with him (ick). To prove her passion, she gave him, you guessed it, a red rose!

I can laugh now, but I was not laughing then. I told him that I gave her the rose! Well he knew she wasn't seriously flirting, but he did think it ill mannered that she cast off the "precious" rose to him.

He gave me the rose.

I threw it out.

Oh, the troubled stories of folks like me who live among the stars!  ;)

I will ask that the title of thread be edited by dropping the word "funny". I think more people will feel comfortable posting.  :)

It was like reading a great book that i couldn't put down!  I thought the story was great to begin with BUT then whenever u got in the elevator and what happened, happened...that was an over the top great story! Wow, what a jerk Lana was. Did anything become of u & the valet boy?  Candy

Glad you enjoyed my Turner Tale. Both the guy and my friend were models, they got engaged and moved to New York within the year. I never saw the guy again, but I ran into the girl several years later. She was aloof and had that certain "celebrity aire" about her, so I just backed off after saying hi. She told me their engagement had broken, but no other details on the guy. His lashes... his eyes....Oh My!

Speaking of books... I met Tom Robbins (Even Cowgirls Get the Blues) at a book signing.

I also read the autobiography of Dr. Francis Conley who in 1966 became the first woman to pursue a surgical internship at Stanford University Hospital, and in 1986 she became the first woman to be appointed to a tenured full professorship of neurosurgery at a medical school in the United States. In 1991, she risked her career when she drew public attention to the sexist environment which, she argued, pervaded Stanford University Medical Center.  Since I have worked in technology for 15 years, which is still, but early on was virtually entirely male dominated,  in some ways I could relate, although not near her level.  I wrote her an email.  She wrote me back  with a substantial response, praising me for "breaking barriers" in my world and her equivalent to "you go girl"! :)

When I was in high school, they filmed a lot of "Ordinary People" in my town.  Robert Redford was around a lot.  He's a little guy with toothpick legs.  Still, he had a commanding presence; he was the director, after all - and handsome!

After the movie was made, they had a special premier for folks from the area.  RR showed up and hour late (and, of course, they couldn't begin with out him).  So, we waited in the theater.  He spoke for about 5 min once he got there, and then he came and sat in the row right behind where I was sitting.  It was very distracting to watch the movie that way.  Not only was RR right there, but with the director directly behind you, you want to be sure you react properly to each scene.  Plus, I knew all the places and most of the extras, so that made it difficult to concentrate on the plot.  At the end of the screening, I had no idea how the movie ended.  I had to see it again later to "really" know what it was about.

WWWI: What an incredible experience. That really is my favorite kind of celebrity story. Kudos to you. I knew you were unique/special/brilliant/wonderful.

Thank you for sharing that part of yourself with us. I am honored.

Hello. You know, RR is a very special favorite of mine. I do have a sense of humor about him, and your description of him is too funny!  Little guy with toothpick legs  :D:laugh::D  He and his people have been lying about his height since his first big movie.

The woman who wrote Ordinary People, Judith Guest (last name is not her real name BTW), lived in a suburb of Minneapolis. A guy I dated was her son's good friend. He brought Judith in to school as "show and tell" after the movie came out.  :)

Your experience while watching the movie, then having to see it again - too good!  8)

mplsgrl - you always say the BEST things.  You are very skilled at "seeing" people, the kind of acknowledgement and appreciation of other people that feeds their souls.  Not sure where you came from, but am really glad you are here. :)

Gee, WWWI, what a kind compliment. It is my true pleasure to let people know how I feel about their post. I am so darn happy to be alive, it's easier than ever to respond in an honest positive way to people when they are in truth. Naturally, this means I cannot EVER speak to a politician.

Where did I come from? That is truly funny, seriously  :D. People have been asking me that since I was a toddler, I am not kidding you. People seem to find me odd. In fact, it incorporates itself into one of my celebrity stories I will tell later.

I will be glad to answer any question about myself if you would like more info, obviously, I enjoy talking about my wonderful self.  :P

I think you are so groovy! *As Marcia Marcia Marcia would say*

I feel like I've hit pay dirt.

Simon Cowell was on the same flight as me once. I was terrified to approach him lest he bit off my head a la American Idol, but one of the airport workers did and he was very pleasant.

Hi Princezz, it's particularly fun being "stuck" on a plane with a celeb! There's no where for them to hide. After all, how long can you stay in that teeny bathroom?  ;D

I was on a plane on my way to LA to go to Disneyland with family. I saw Kenny Loggins get on the plane, he had just done a concert in Minneapolis. No one seemed to know who he was, but believe me, he had that celeb thing working big time . :D  Gorgeous!

I usually don't make a fuss over the famous, but as he got up to leave (after all, he was in first class, up front - I thought he'd be out in 30 seconds!) I shouted: " Look everybody, it singing star Kenny Loggins!" - I am an idiot- He turned to look at me with his eyes and mouth wide open in shock, then anger.  :o>:(

And of course, there was some kind of problem with the docking for exit, so we all just had to stand and wait! for a long time! People were pushing to get to poor KL, to talk with him, get his autograph. Yikes!

Okay, so we get into the gate. This was the old days, when non-passengers used to be thronging all over the gates at airports, remember? I was looking for my sister, turning this way and that trying to find her tiny self through the crowd and I bashed into a man carrying a guitar who was walking my way without looking. Yes, of course, it was Kenny Loggins.  ::)  I said, "Sorry Kenny Loggins, I..." but he had walked away in disgust!

Okay, the next day in Disneyland I was with my sister and her friends. I was telling them the story and they thought it was hilarious. As we are walking through the park, we saw a cute family walking our way, and the dad was hold a Mickey balloon. My sister and friends were squealing with delight when Kenny Loggins stood in front of me, shook his head, then burst out laughing. He said, "Man, I must have done something really bad to deserve this. Have a good day girls." And he walked away shaking his head, laughing.

Reading all of your wonderful stories makes me feel pretty embarrassed to post this because mine are small potatoes compared to yours but I guess I'll go ahead in spite of that. Some of these people I have had actual encounters with, some are family, and some I've just been in the same place at the same time with:

Davy Jones

Orson Wells

Jim Messina

John Travolta

Stevie Nicks

Valerie Breiman

Adam Rifkin

Jon Favreau

Famke Janssen

John Ingoldsby

Gene Simmons

Shannon Tweed

Some of the above are "behind the scenes" celebs but have also acted in various films. Of those people I've heard many of their firsthand stories about certain other celebs such as:

Rob Reiner

Rob Lowe

Anthony LaPaglia

Tom Cruise

Claudia Christian

Alec Baldwin

Jason Bateman

Dolly Parton

Adam Sandler

Terri Hatcher

Elizabeth McGovern

Kevin Bacon

I know I'm missing some but those are the first that come to mind right now.

The sweetest of them all:  John Travolta & Dolly Parton.

The nastiest of them all: Alec Baldwin & Famke Janssen.

The most messed-up ones of them all for whatever reasons at the time: Rob Reiner, Stevie Nicks, and Rob Lowe.

That's all for now, folks!  :D

Hello thrive (love that moniker!) I am so sorry if my tiny tales have anybody feeling like their stories are "lesser". For me, not working in "the industry", it's just been darn odd that I've always had these encounters with celebs, even when I lived in the the boonies, i.e., Minneapolis. Also, people have always enjoyed the telling of the tiny tales, it seems to give us all something to laugh or shake our heads over.  ;)

As for your list, very nice! I would really like to hear more about Mr. Orson Welles!!  Also, your list of these "bright, shiny people" sure let's me know this: People are just people, their moods and attitude change depending upon so many things like atmosphere and timing. You see, I have much different perceptions of some on your list based on my experiences.  :)  I never really thought about how my own presence may have affected the situation. Thank you for helping me learn something about myself today.  ::)

Thanks thrive.

I was wondering if Stevie got that reputation from being on klonopin. I guess she was on it for 10 yrs then most likely became crazier when she stopped. I know she was doing a lot of cocaine & drinking too. I was also wondering about rob Lowe ...it figures my heartthrob (25 yrs ago) was a bad boy.  :smitten: candy

Hi Candy,

Due to the um, "intimate" nature of a dream I had about Rob Lowe some 25 years ago, I still blush when I read his name, like I did in your post.  I looked at his autobiography at Target last year, and I felt embarrassed to hold it it my hands!   Of course, I was still in dp/dr at the time. That is one famous person I am honestly glad I have never met, hope I never will. I am blushing and very nervous typing this. Hey, oh boy! An emotion!

Hmmm...when I lived in The Netherlands w/ my hubby, we were out one day and ended walking behind Rob Schneider while he toured Amsterdam.  I know it's not that exciting, but I thought it was awesome!  lol  He's quite short and seemed to walking around w/ a man who looked to be a bodyguard of sorts.  We also saw the Dutch singer "Anouk" buying munchies w/ her boyfriend at the grocery store.  Their cart was FULL of chips and chocolate...literally full to the top.

My friend worked at a fancy hotel in Scotland a few years back and met Sean Connery (she said he was a gentleman) and Christian Slater (she said he was SO nice and very charming).

That's my contribution!  lol

Hello again, ladies, :)

I met Roy Schneider in New York in my senior year of high school.  I was there looking at colleges and he sat next to a friend and I at a restaurant.  He and his wife were not only nice, but also interested and engaging.  They even picked up the tab.  This was around the time that the original Jaws came out (Somewhere after).  It was a thrill at the time...

I've also met Rob Lowe many times.  Pre-sobriety....and post.  Same for Robert Downey Jr.  They are both very talented, and lovely souls.

I have stayed away from this site since my initial posts because I felt strange somehow.  Too close to home in a bizarre way.  But I have continued to read this thread and find it fun and innocuous.

I love all your stories, and have a few more of my own when things calm down elsewhere...
