WHAT ARE THE DANGERS OF LONG TERM BENEDRYL USE?

Recommended Posts

I took Benedryl for sleep for several weeks last year, but I started having night terrors, panic and trembling. So I stopped using it for about 6 months. Just recently, I had trouble sleeping, and I took 50 mg Benedryl for about 10 days, and now I'm in HELL! I stopped taking it 4 or 5 days ago, and I still can't sleep AT ALL!!! As soon as I start to fall asleep I am in full-blown terror! What does Benedryl do to us? How do I get out of this? How long does it take to get Benedryl out of your system?

Hello @[Ta...], I used diphenhydramine for about ten days continuously in September and it clearly revved my symptoms up. I slowly went back to baseline in a few days.

I think it itself causes dependence.

I use it in a low dose)(half) and only for a short time since then.

I am very positive your sleep will return in no time!

Seems like you answered your own question, and interestingly enough, I've taken half a Tylenol PM last 2 nights and hate it because it's already effecting my moods, and giving me lack of energy.  I took it because I got hives and had stopped taking prescribed Zyrtec, which I can see I have to suffer through the hives.  I just won't do the benadryl or zyrtec from now on :(

I agree, almost like when I get the hives, it's because "they" need the benadryl/Zyrtec!  Just like Tolerance Mode.  To hell with that ever again, only took Zyrtex for 3 months or so, and benadryl twice as I ran out of Zyrtex.

I am SO SENSITIVE TO EVERYTHING NOW!!! I can't eat wheat, or dairy or soy, and I had no problem with any of them before. Even Tylenol causes a huge glutamate storm for me now!

I'm sorry, that would be worse, much worse than me having to cut out just carbs.  Luckily, Keto nutrition I have no issue with, but I have to avoid some supplements, and also, beside high carbs, I can't tolerate any over-the-counter.  Tried some now, and proved they are just like any other drug for me.

All I can handle is meats, fish, chicken, eggs, for my proteins, dairy is just 1/2 C of Two Good Yogurt, with walnuts and blueberries (1/4 cup each in yogurt).  Breakfast is just eggs/sausage or bacon, and a little cheese. So I'm not starving by any means.

I hope you can discover more things you CAN eat and tolerate.  That has to be my focus ;)
