I’ve put off much needed dental surgery for 16 months. Crawled in yesterday, was hardly verbal and have 2 choices for sedation:

*Versed, a benzo.   OR

* Fentanyl-which scares the bejebbies out of me

What would you do??

This is difficult. I found a local dentist in the UK who treats those scared of dentistry. I’ve not been for a long time but need to.

In the past & pre benzos use, I had IV valium at a hospital for wisdom teeth extraction. It was offered it & I gladly accepted.

I have previously taken 2mg of valium each time I’ve been to the local dentist just to take the edge off fear. Really, it was to get me there!
If a one off dose of a benzo sedation may enable you to cope with the surgery & won’t interfere with WD etc. then maybe that could be a consideration.
I don’t have knowledge of fentanyl vs benzo.

Based on my experience alone I would go for benzo.
There is Bach flower rescue remedy that can be useful additional support for fearful situations.
wishing you well with this dilemma.

I recommend fentanyl.
Why?
I had three shunt surgeries last June/July and the second was Painful!!!
So, my son told me.
They had given me an oxycodone pill, but it wasn't doing much.
He pushed them to give me something else.
They gave me a shot of fentanyl. That worked.
It's just a tool.
Have you tried laughing gas and Novocain?
What works for me, laughing gas on its highest setting and two or three injection's
of Novocain.
