I took generic famotidine through my taper, and partway through post-acute. I'm of it now. Eating fine, pretty much back to normal diet. Not taking anything for my stomach or indigestion. It's nice to be free of it.

Yeah, that's what happened to me with most of them I've tried, and I've tried most of the H1 antihistamines now. A mate of mine has histamine intolerance/ MCAS, still going through the motions of an official diagnosis and waiting to see a specialist. he told me that the histamine reaction is due to you being overloaded with histamine. But how true that is I couldn't say.

I think cetirizine is zyrtec in the US yes, I've been taking a couple of months on and off. I found it a little stimulating at 1st, so would only take it when things were bad. I read it can put you in fight or flight, and is known to cause anxiety in some people. But I've ben working on my gut health and tolerate it very well now. Allevia (UK) I found worked better for my symptoms at the time, but it aggravated my stomach so I couldn't eat anything the next day without getting revved up. It has a negative effect on DAO production, which could explain it?

DAO I also found stimulating, as did my friend with MCAS. We moved onto NaturDAO which is made from pea sprouts. I could tolerate that much better, but didn't make a huge difference in my symptoms and it's pretty expensive. Although you can sprout your own pea's and add them to smoothies, salads etc, which is something I should try.

For me personally Saccharomyces Boulardii seems to be helping a lot. It's good for leaky gut, candida and has been shown to almost double the amount of DAO found in the gut. There are natural H2 blockers such as ginger, liquorice and  gastrodia which you may find helpful, if it's specifically the H2 you want. Or theres good old quercetin as a mast cell stabilizer amongst others

I've been taking Zyrtec (in US) and stopped when I ran out about a week ago.  My hives are back with a vengence and I got another script waiting for me.  Wanted to try and wait this out to see if I was having the itch because my body is wd from the Zyrtec.  I guess I'm suspicious of everything I put in my mouth after experiencing wd sxs from a benzo :(

I seem to get the hives only when I get anxiety, and I have it now just thinking about it.  I don't always get the welts, but my skin itches everywhere, different spots at different times, like my back was just itching, then it stopped, and now my fingers/hands are itching.  Quite miserable, so I suppose I'll go get the dang Zyrtec.  I tolerate it and it relieves the itch.  No drowsiness whatsoever, and I wouldn't know I took it if I hadn't stopped itching. But I still can't tell if I've gotten dependent on it, but I had the hives long before I took any anti-histamine.

So I guess I think everything can have wd sxs, and also maybe Tolerance wd??

Hi @[ns...], I hope I didn't ask this before, but are you on a low-histamine diet as well?  I've found our foods and drink have to change, for example, I eat anti-inflammatory foods to help with any pain, and also I am super low-carb, below 20 grams a day.

I have not been diagnosed with histamine intolerance but I feel if I am, this nutrition I do now is helping if I do have it.  I do understand the difference between allergies and HI though.  Some of the things I eat are said to be bad for HI. I don't eat processed foods, as far as I know.  I am always reading more info about it all :) oregonlady

Hi oregonlady, I'm on a diet of whatever I can eat lol. I think I'm figuring out what going on with my intolerance/sensitivity to most foods. I researched glutamate and it looks like I unintentionally  eliminated every food high in glutamate. Canned foods, processed foods etc. I didn't plan it that way but as I looked at the foods I eliminated, they are all high in glutamate and the foods I do eat of course have it but are mostly lower in it. There are some exceptions though and those foods seem to cause me more symptoms. Like avocado, they really bother me but I eat them about twice a week and deal with it because I need the fat. I don't think I have hi, I believe I'm coming closer to figuring out what it is and it's more a sensitivity to certain foods and at this point it appears to be glutamate but can't be  certain. My body and brain feel like I have too much electricity in me, my heart included of course. I think benzo withdrawal due to the effects on gaba causes glutamate to dominate in our brain and causes these kinds of issues. Not mcas of course thats a different story all together. I see a gi in April so we will see but I really think sensitivity to many foods,  possibly due to high glutamate could be what's causing me my issues. I don't think it's allergies, I really believe it's more of a sensitivity issue for me.

If you research the foods u can't tolerate and glutamate content vs those u can tolerate you may see a pattern.

I could eat most of those I can't tolerate now just 2 yrs ago, some just 7 8 months ago so I really think the common link is benzo withdrawal as with everything else we suffer with during withdrawal.

I hope your doing well and you can get to the bottom of why you are sensitive or allergic to certain foods as well. If it's glutamate (msg) it's probably related to withdrawal, sensitivity or allergy to it. Almost finished tapering so I'll begin introducing slowly some of the foods back in my diet and see if I can tolerate them, I suspect I will.

Take care ok

Ns

I'm headed out Nsindy, but I guess it's what we all can eat without amping up our sxs ;) Best of luck and I'll check back in later when I have more time, see how you are doing ;)

Just a little caution, should GI issues be an issue.  Having gone through H-pylori....and how looooong it takes to get over it.  And taking Proton Pump Inhibitors for a while...my stomach is destroyed.  Pharmacist says don't take them long term....Doctors prescribe them long term ..Oh My kinda like the benzos lol not for long term use but here take them for 20 years :(

Here's a link that might explain some things...

https://www.healthydirections.com/articles/digestive-health/most-dangerous-medications-gut-health?closebox=true

I recently learned that PPIs can increase the the effect of benzos with up to 30-40% because of delay in gastric emptying.

I took PPI for four days. Recommended by my doctor who well knew I take Zolpiclon, but didn't think to check for interaction even though PPIs are apparantly very well known for increasing the effect of many meds.

I couldn't figure out why I was extra fatigued, until I came across that info. No more PPI for me from that second! I manage with Gaviscon.
