Screen Protectors for Smartphones

Question? Do you think these things really help to prevent cracking / shattering your screen during accidental drops?

 

I have always used cases, but I just added the screen protector.

My sister had a cheap one, and she's had no problem with it. My son works at Apple and told me about one that costs $40 or so and is much better, but so far I haven't gotten it. He told me that if you have an expensive phone, get a good screen protector. I'm still using a flip phone even though he gave me his iphone, so I don't have personal knowledge of the protector.
