There's an alternate ending that was filmed in which several of these alien plants grow to Godzilla proportions and wreck havoc on the city. It was a bonus feature on the original DVD release, but the studio didn't authorize it and they were pulled from the shelves. I luckily found one and sold it for muchos de dinero on eBay.
