I have always gone out for Halloween.  What do I do if I'm home?  I can't have everyone knock.  Should I put note on door?  Says get candy from neighbor, lol.  Kidding.

I also saw for the first time this year actual door plaques you can buy that say "We're out of candy please don't knock"  Put one of those up!

I think it is one of those unwritten Halloween etiquette rules that if the house/porch light is out, then the house is not participating in the holiday.  Just turn off the lights -especially porch or post lights.  Good Luck.

When our kids were young, we'd put a bowl of candy out on the stoop with a big sign stuck to the door, saying, "Out trick-or-treating .... Help yourself ... but please leave some for others!"  Only once (in about 10 years) did we come home to find an empty bowl.
