Study, Sept/16: "Inappropriate prescribing in older persons..."

Here's yet one more in a long line of studies on "potentially inappropriate medications" for the elderly. This one's from Brazil, but the conclusions are similar to those I've read on the same topic. And yes, benzodiazepines are almost always at the top of the list.

"Inappropriate prescribing in older persons: A systematic review of medications available in different criteria":

https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/27649514

What I'd really like to see are the studies looking at the changed prescribing behaviours that take place as a result of all of these studies. It's time for action!

The elderly are prescribed WAY to many medications. I went to visit my mom at her assisted living place last weekend.  She is in a wheelchair. She was nodded out the entire time I was there.  Xanax and Oxycodone.

My father died 5 years ago. He was on 39 medications.

Nursing homes are nothing more than slow-acting hospices.  Everyone should visit a nursing home and watch them all sitting there, drooling on themselves, drugged senseless.  For many if not most of us, this is our destination, our reward.
