Sorry, but I can't deal with the "I am better than you club." The dems clap at every third word, the donkeys sit there with a puss on their face. John Boehner has been spending too much time in his tanning bed. And mostly, Obama is just a repeat on what he has said in numerous previous press conferences. Nothing new, just as I suspected. He didn't even talk about immigration, which should be near the top of the list, as congress wants to put the nix on his executive action. Booooring! Bets

It is new to me because I don't usually listen to Obama speeches. Learning about US politics.

Cog fog makes concentration difficult though.

Now they are discussing the speech on the news!!

He is a good orator, for sure. Don't know enough about his term in office to judge.

It makes a change from UK politics although we are facing many of the same issues.

Passes the time during the night.

We have an election this year so it will be party political broadcasts etc until May!!

I am keen on environmental issues. No planet, no worries!!

The scrabble for finite resources such as oil is of great concern.

We need a fairer world if we are to live in harmony.

He gave recognition to transgender, he took credit for the improvements that were lacking under the previous administration, what's not to like?

I enjoyed the speech.  He was in top form, he's not always such a good speaker.  Life for many Americans has gotten much better, IMO.  But the U.S.is a huge, huge country, and many haven't shared in the bounty yet.  Hopefully that will start to happen .....

I live in DC, so I got to see both of his inaugural parades. The first one was simply amazing. He is our first African American president and people came from all over. It was freezing cold but nobody seemed to mind.

That first inauguration is frozen in time in my mind. A moment of awe in our history.

Are there problems? Of course. But progress is still progress.

I was thinking the same thing about Boehner.

Either his tanning bed, or too many weekends at the beach!

Haha!

You have to give Obama a little break here. While he does far too much micro managing, he is stuck between a rock and a hard place because GOP-majority in Congress hates him and will do anything to stop him or his proposals. They ragged on him so badly about his Affordable Health Care Act and wanted to rescind it because there was a big computer glitch. When a huge program like this is introduced, there are always computer glitches that work out in the end. Now we are talking about 300 million plus people who live in the U.S and flooded the network with far too many look sees. They just weren't equipped to handle such a large amount. Congress needs to look into the past and take a long hard look at the beginning of Medicare. It was a freaking mess when it first started out and now it's one of the most important programs for us Americans. If not, the most.....Bets And yes, he's a good speaker. Not like the Bushes. Ugh on them. But I think Reagan was a good speaker too, tho I have to wonder if he was a dummy in the lap of a really good speaker.

I'm sorry this happened to you, I know it has happened for some people.  My health insurance actually went down, from the ridiculous age-related monthly sum of $800 (to one of the very "best" American HMO's) to a mere, ahem, $650 per month.  And I still have to pay $30 every time I go in for an exam.  And, I've only ever exceeded my yearly deductible once in my long, healthy, life.  This was all due to avaricious private insurance companies.  But then, I'll be eligible for Medicare soon, and I'm counting the days...

:tickedoff:

PS, Brits and Europeans, you don't know how lucky you are (IMO)

Sorry, but I don't believe this. Ask a socialist how hard it is to get a doctor's appointment? Like one year? Most use private insurance so they can see a REAL doctor within weeks. Ask any Canadian or anyone in Poland.......

We are extremely fortunate to have the NHS here in the UK. It may not be perfect but everyone has access to healthcare irrespective of income. We complain of course about waiting times to see a specialist and to get routine operations but every system has its flaws. Private healthcare is only a tiny proportion of healthcare here but is growing particularly in England. Not in Scotland. We guard our state system and do not want it privatised.  We do pay for eye tests. Prescriptions are free in Scotland, not in England.

Waiting times for a  GP appointment can be as long as  2 weeks but not for emergencies.  This is ok for many ailments. Waiting times for hip operations can be 18 months.  This is not good of course.  Don't know other waiting times.

I would not want to be part of a system where healthcare depends on ability to pay.  Private healthcare is not necessarily better here. Same doctors do NHS and private work.  Possibly less risk of infections etc.

I am obviously a socialist!!

Not sure what a REAL doctor is. Is there another kind?  :idiot:

yes, i realize this, it has been a different system for years.

but keep in mind , in this country f.e., the working people are paying very high

rates, in order to carry unfortunate ones along.

Everybody is insured, even a tramp on the road...automatically.......

no insurance doesn't exist, which i think is awesome.

To change a system takes time.....sometimes a long time. :)
