I hope this is am acceptable topic to discuss if not I apologize. I have read many posts with questions if people are working during their tapers and I'm just curious what we all do for work. To make this fun, also add what you would rather be doing for a career!

I'm a project manager and business analyst for financial systems at a global investment bank. If I had the choice and opportunity I would love to play music full-time in a band!

HI TIOD,

I AM AN OCCUPATIONAL/MASSAGE THERAPIST.

I HATE OT...I DON'T REALLY BELIEVE IN IT (ANYMORE) I THINK IT'S A MANIPULATIVE WORD GAME AND ALL ABOUT THE CENSUS.

LOVE MASSAGE!!!! I TRULY BELIEVE IN THE HEALING POWERS OF TOUCH. I HAVE NOT BEEN ABLE TO PARCTICE SINCE I STARTED MY TAPER. IT IS UNREAL THE AMOUNT OF STRENGTH I HAVE LOST.

I HOPE ONCE I AM RECOVERED, AND I REGAIN MY STRENGTH TO LOOK INTO INFANT MASSAGE (MORE SPECIFICALLY) NEO-NATAL MASSAGE. I AM VERY INTERESTED IN THIS AND WHAT IT COULD DO FOR PREMIE'S TRYING TO THRIVE.

THANK YOU FOR ASKING :)

FLUTER :smitten:

I think this is a great idea for a thread

Island! playing music fulltime would be heavenly! What type of music do you play?

Flutter! Oh yes the healing power of touch! and the neo-natal message...what a wonderful concept!

I am a former " learning specialist" at a local community college and currently a mental health therapist which as you can imagine, is going down the tubes fast if I can not get my own brain up and working again.

I have always painted portraits and my dream would be to do that as a living....fat chance but one can dream...  ::)

I like playing lots of different things. I play guitar and I'm mostly into playing blues, funk, and improvisational rock. Music has always played a big part in my life and most of my friends are musicians. I've lately picked up learning music theory as a new hobby and hopefully would like to start writing songs soon, even if no one hears them it's a great way for both stress/anxiety relief and a way to express myself.

Mary I am sure you are doing fine in your current position...if anything you can relate more to the field as a whole I feel. Painting is great as well. I'm horrible at drawing but I also like to draw...could never do a portrait myself so props!

Island.....it would be great if you could write music....wow...what a ballad this journey would make....about a year prior to all of this my daughter and I took lessons together..she on the mandolin and myself on the violin...my son also joined in on the guitar as well,to  learn some Irish music...we had a good string of jigs going and it was fun....since then, I ve read a few articles about about how playing an instrument can heal a wounded brain...there was even an article about a woman who had sustained a head injury and after picking up and learning to play the violin, she recovered 100%...I ve been looking at my mine for months , thinking it s time to pick it up again? What do you think about this?  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T236PgCUcgY  You on the guitar??..lol

I m .finding that getting " out of my own head" has been difficult and I think this is one of the prevailing challenges...in my work the concept of " being present" to another is the most therapeutic aspect and it is something that I have to say, I was always " good " at...I never really appreciated that virtue so much as I do now....praying that will all come back...

Hoping that you can resume that wonderful musical talent of yours Island...now that is a gift from above....keep working at it and heal, heal , heal my friend.... :smitten:

Haha Mary that is great. I hope one day to have a family of my own to be able to play with. You should definitely pick up that violin!!

This is a short clip of something me and a buddy improvised earlier this year. I'm not very great; I spend way too much time dealing with work and my anxiety to practice these days but it's a great hobby and a good stress reliever.

I'm feeling okay, over the past three months I have reduced my klonopin intake from over 5mg to just 2mg. Feeling okay, still working and doing normal activities. I plan to stay at this dose for a while and then go to 1.75.

Played some guitar with some friends this weekend, it was great.

Ideally I would love to be an actress - I have a BA majoring in Fine Arts, Philosophy, and Australian history. Currently I work as an unpaid mother, and the jobs I do when not being mum is in finance. (Go figure ?)

I always thought when i was a child we had the world at our feet and dreams could come true, but I took a gap year prior to uni and discovered my love of travelling (that gap year turned into 4! I also met my hubby then) once back I had a banking background, and therefore I always end up back in finance when I go back to work so I can afford my travelling passion.

I lost my confidence in my 20s so my dream to act never came true. By the time I found me again I was a mum. I had almost forgotten about acting - but I saw a girl who I was in youth theatre with for the first time in 15-20 years a couple of weeks ago and she asked if I'd ever given it a go. I had gotten into a prestigious drama school through audition we had both auditioned but she hadn't made one of the cuts. Only 20 positions 2000 auditions - and I think she thought id follow it through...., hubby broke back, couldn't afford to not work :(. Then I lost myself.

I hope this journey is the last time I lose myself, and I'm glad I still travel. But its sad sometimes. Working in a rigid industry like banking when I feel much more like an artistically minded individual.

Don't give up dreaming island. The blues are timeless - and music a talent not hindered by age or looks.

And Mary - keep on painting, everyone knows artists often get more famous after death! (Not wishing that on you at all tho). One just never knows!

Fluter - that is a beautiful dream. You go girl xo

Never stop dreaming!

Thanks bad choices. "The blues are timeless" - what a great quote. I hope to gain a lot of my creativity and drive back and yea I hear what you're saying about banking, it's brutal. I am going through w/d and working about 60 hour weeks. The material is so challenging when all you're thinking about is how shitty yOu feel and how everyone else is feeling clear headed.

Nice. I used to date a fellow who lived in WY and did a lot of jamming with buddies......was into Blues......I think it's a great way to express creativity. Kind of like stream of consciousness for writers. It's all good.

I used to work in lab medicine and at one time was in charge of a lab. I won't be going back to that profession. I miss the work but not the chronic stress and non stop call back duty.

My ideal job would have been Forensics, but after this life changing experience would want to do something that involved working with people more. Maybe an art therapist?

Interesting responses from others to this thread.  :)

My dream career would have been being a doctor.  I worked in the medical field and did get a college degree as a lab tech and worked as a lab tech most of my life.  Too late now.  I'm now on disability with a fried brain from these drugs.

Thanks Mandala! I love jamming, it's a great stress reliever and when I'm anxious it always helps with that too. Plus it works my brain, finding the right keys to improvise in and all that.

My gf is going to school for art and early child hood education and wants to do art therapy for a living!

I'm very sad to read this. Is your brain really fried? That scares me. Also if it's any relief my sister is a doctOr and the amount of debt she has would be enough to throw me into an anxiety vicious cycle.

Becks it may feel like your brain is fried but it's not. I too have 8 years post sec education in lab medicine and worked as a tech for decades. For more than two years post all the drugs I was convinced I was brain damaged. It was the w/d and then the recovery. My intellectual capabilites are better than they have been in decades and the same with my cognitive abilities...........except when under any kind of a time constraint. Give it more time ok?  :smitten:

I am a journalist, but show dogs in AKC competitions for fun and reward. I would prefer to be a professional dog handler. No money in that. I am also an AKC judge...

I would LOVE to work with dogs. My dogs have been my only constant through all this.

I used to work with homeless youth as a drug and alcohol counselor but the stress of the job while in tolerance wd made it unbearable. I'm now working as a bartender which is the only way I really know how to make money.

I hate the work but I think the forced social interactions have helped keep me sane.

I agree. I think dogs are so precious as they don't judge you and give you unconditional love. I wouldn't have made it this far if it weren't for my three golden retrievers. Nobody in the family understand or cares.... I wouldn't mind being a counselor but I can see how stressful that can be. Remember, mix the drinks but not drink them. Nothing like talking to a drunk to make you smile, or pity them, whichever is more fun.

Thank you Bad Choices...you inspired me to pick up my brush again...don t think I ll ever be famous dead or alive...lol  Regarding your acting dream....don t give up on that either...if not the big screen there are always local theatres that have great productions!! And then there is always the " Academy Awards" maybe an award someday for the performances we have to give trying to act like there is nothing wrong while we struggle through this " healing " process....wishing you and all here a complete healing through and through.. :smitten:
