I think it is an awful expression. 

 

Housebound maybe isn't any better. Visions of being tied up and bound to a chair.

 

Elderly shut-in invokes images of the aged digging tunnels to escape.

 

All this enforced isolation is addling my brain. 

 

My cousin, now 70,  has lung cancer, diabetes and emphesema but still goes skiing. 

 

He plans to come back to Scotland for a visit next year. It is a long journey from Australia.

 

Definitely not a "shut-in".
