I’m not posting the video to this song (sorry, abcd), as I count among 16K who consider the vid less than average. Against 729K who gave it a "like". Maybe they just gave it to the song. The song contains a beautiful piano riff, lyrics and vocals by Chris Martin. Against a great guitar background. IMO someone treated it really badly by designing both the single cover and making the vid. Maybe the guys just didn’t have money to hire someone better. I’m not gonna post anything that I don’t consider as art. Besides, for me this song is so unique, I only accept the studio version... As to vids with lyrics, there are too many mistakes. Even I can spot them, as a non-native speaker of English. And the sound is worse. Lyrics are open to interpretation. They are just poetry.

Syd Barrett’s Illness

 

According to Roger Waters, this song was based on a poem he wrote about Syd Barrett’s fall from reality. Syd Barrett (6 Jan. 1946 - 7 July 2006) was best known as one of the founding members of the band Pink Floyd. Lead singer, guitarist and principal songwriter. He was excluded from the band in April 1968, after David Gilmour took over as their new guitarist. Barrett allegedly suffered from schizophrenia, which onset was triggered by the use of drugs and the pressure of living the life of a rockstar. Which was first: drugs or schizophrenia. Does it matter anymore. He died of diabetes, so was probably on APs for the rest of his life. Schizophrenia is an ordeal for friends and family of those who suffer from it. The loss of contact with the person one used to know is an unbearable experience. Schizophrenics just live in their own world. They don’t care anymore.

 

The story reminds me of a girl I once knew. She wasn’t afraid of anything. A real fighter. Never gave up. Didn’t obey any rules. Didn’t conform to any authorities. Always spoke her mind. Got into trouble often. Whatever has become of this girl. I sometimes think I catch a fleeting glimpse of her. But it’s an illusion. She’s gone. I miss her so much. People just disappear from our lives forever.
