R.I.P. Hillel Slovak. Died on June 25, 1988. Aged 26. Of heroin OD. Gone. Never forgotten. Both Anthony Kieldis and Hillel Slovak decided to ditch heroin at the same time. In 1988.

Anthony survived. Hillel didn’t make it.

 

RHCP guitarist John Frusciante was deeply influenced by Hillel’s playing style.

Hillel also taught Flea to play bass.

 

To all my Friends who lost their battle with heroin and other drugs / alcohol / psych meds.

 

Anthony Kieldis: “The song is about the repeated failure to start your life anew and how difficult it can be to get rid of old ways of thinking, and destructive ideas we become so attached to.[...] It’s about surviving, starting fresh. I’ve made a mess of everything, but I have a blank slate - a canvas of snow - and I get to start over.”

 

The song has a wonderful riff by John Frusciante, and makes use of the double stops on the bass by Flea. Lyrics are open to interpretation. But everyone who’s been close to death cause of their addiction would probably have no problem understanding them.

Bets and Estee, thanks for the contributions.  Hadn't heard the Motley Crue one before, great tune!  I'm amazed at the background knowledge you gals have on all these artists, I've never really got into the people behind the music that deeply, just enjoyed their music.  There are lots of auto/biographies I would love to read though.  Someday.
