What do people EAT while tapering/in withdrawal

Following on from Oscar's thread, I am interested if any of you have found food that helps/food that harms, I have had issues with food, tried vegetarian, Ayurvedic and Macrobiotic, but I kept loosing weight, was also a hassle during difficult times (been plenty) to organise and cook etc., I lost a LOT of weight over last 18 months, now I am eating virtually anything and have put a little back on, wodering if there was a common consensus on foods that harm/foods that heal when tapering or in w/d?

After d dx of high blood pressure last November, I had a pretty radical change in diet. I now eat a lot of fish (salmon, sardines, tuna, scallops and shrimp) whole grains (pastas, breads, cereals) and about 5-6 servings a day of fruits and veggies. I also am a big fan of healthy fats like olive oil, peanuts, avocado etc. My blood pressure is now below the 120/80 mark which is great, and I LOOK fantastic (still feel pretty crappy at times, however). I still have some troubling symptoms and am currently dealing with a setback  :-[, but all in all I can say that avoiding NY processed foods has been a lifesaver. Processed meats, white flour products, and sugar bombs all seemed to temporarily make me feel 'content', but the resultant crash made me feel 10x worse and also kept my baseline pretty low. I also lost about 20 lbs, and am now the same weight I was in high school (!), and holding steady. though it seems weight loss may be a problem for you. I can relate to not wanting to prepare food, so most of what I eat these days requires only minimal prep. I truly believe that as we heal, our body needs the best nourishment to help rebuild our shattered nervous systems. It may not make the process any faster, but I'm sure it makes it a bit smoother, combined with all the health benefits of just eating well to begin with.  Best of luck.

Was that last reply serious? :laugh:Anyway I've had to limited my foods to chicken, beef, sweet potatoes, brown rice, oats, green beans, stewed apples, broccoli and rice milk. I have just recently started to add back wheat and peanut butter. I have had some luck with organic frozen baby food fruits. I was getting almost no fat and think that was causing some issues. I just received my Bovine Colostrum today and took my first dose. I hope it goes well. I hope you are able to find a good variety.

When I was in the beginning stages of tapering...I had enough GI problems that I believed, there was no possible way I would complete my taper. Someone later suggested the brat diet.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BRAT_diet

Reluctantly, having lost hope...I tried it. This helped immensely as I was losing weight quickly, and I was desperate...since so many foods caused me discomfort. This diet might have well saved my life. After that, it came down to refining my the foods I ate. I stopped drinking coffee. soft-drinks and unnaturally sweetened juices, and instead started drinking more water, green and herbal teas with honey. I had to quit eating chocolate, and then...since I don't care for salt...I easily rid it from my diet. Sugar has always been my one weakness and so now I TRY to watch sugars, be they real or the synthetic stuff. White bread is off the list or anything using refined flours or wheat. I eat mostly whole wheat or whole grain breads ( a slice or so as needed). Being Italian, that is near impossible...giving up all breads...so once in a while...I will have a pizza slice or two or that prosciutto sandwich that is staring me in the face...but I only do this if my sx are not bothering me. I now eat some whole wheat pasta's and breads, and use brown rice or Quinoa in almost everything else. Sugar is my weakness...so I at least gave myself a treat...one chocolate chip cookie every couple of days ( thankfully it does not cause me to many problems, as the chips are dark chocolate and the cookies themselves are small enough, that they do not cause my sx to flare). I began to monitor what I eat...as best I could, and just so you know...I still make mistakes here and there. I learned quite quickly that MSG is a no no. I don't like seafood of any kind except for canned tuna and mackerel, and baccala (cod fish) and so that was already a problem...since certain fish are a must. In that respect...I took omega-3 soft gel and now thanks to a friend...who is a Naturopath...I take NutraSea hp, which is an omega three supplement derived from anchovies, sardines, mackerel, and has green tea extract + a lot of flax seed in my diet. I cut out beef as that causes me a lot of distress...its much to heavy for me, and have whittled meats down to chicken, turkey, lamb, and some pork...these meats do not cause me any problems. I use turkey in most every thing...be it chili, lasagna, or meatballs. I also eat a lot of greens...kale, spinach, Swiss chard, dandelion, and rapini are now my fave. I make my own homemade soups. Bone soups are especially important...do a search and you will see how this is now recommended in our diet. Banana's and honey sweetened Greek yogurt are a staple in my diet. I have had no problems with veggies or fruits of any kind, and I also use a lot of garlic and onions in my diet as well.

I don't want to know what I eat.. I, now eat everything.

Like myself Billy, which is why I was wondering, thought maybe I am not doing myself any favours? Hit a wall and started thinking maybe I can do what I can? Maybe grasping at threads but who knows?

Oscar, is there a reason for avoiding the cruciferous veg and other (what I would have thought of as healthy) options you list above?

Broccoli, cabbage, spinach, sprouts actually speed up the clearance of benzos, so they are not a good idea during tapering, whereas grapefruit actually can slow the elimination of benzo´s down, so this is not a good idea at all... there is scientific proof of this, google cruciferous vegetables and benzodiazepine, it is all there... grapefruit is even indicated in med literature.

Hope this helps but sure, this stuff is healthy but not in withdrawals.

NO aspertame or MSG.  They will really cause some damage.  Read labels of all canned/packaged foods and seasonings.  If it says flavoring or modified food starch or anything like that it could be hiding msg.

I didn't know about the crucifers either.  I was eating tons of broccoli and cabbage.  I guess that has to come to a halt!  I did have some idea about the grapefruit though.

Thank you teacher2...it is nice hearing from you again.

I am not doing that much better. The truth is the mental anguish/stuff is horrible, and it won't let go. I have this horrible pressure on the front of my head...that is worse than the tight band while tapering. I can't make sense of anything and the rage...it refuses to go away or let m go. Mornings are all about adrenaline rushes and the sweats. Not better. I made it through tapering but this SUPPOSED healing that is going on...it is just as hellish.

I don't really see any difference with NutraSea. It is far too expensive, but like everything else...I hope it does it's job in the background. Here's the thing, for 2 days...it seemed that everything was tolerable. I guess you might say it was akin to a infinitesimal window. But then...everything took a turn for the worse. SO I don't know if it is helping, but I am continuing to take it...with fingers crossed. This was prescribed by this naturopath who I am seeing. When I told him my story...you could tell he didn't really get it. He was sympathetic but...it seemed surreal. He also prescribed samE, but I also found it was causing some uncomfortable sx.

I actually got the flax at Costco. It's something they just introduced. It's toasted and milled. It has this amazing taste.

Link to the product for those interested: _http://www.roastedflax.com/content/products/products.html?pid=6_

I never had anything like this. I put it in everything from yogurt, to soup, to salads. If it helps, I don't know...but it tastes great, it's good for you and no sx...what else could anyone ask for. I highly recommend it, and it wasn't that expensive. I think it was around $10.00.

Thanks again for the kind words. I hope your doing well.

My appetite is pretty much gone most of the day except for at night. If I can't eat I force myself to drink an egg white protein shake with stevia. I try to stick to the paleo diet. Actually I mostly eat meats, eggs and fish, nuts, seeds, some veggies, fruits but only once a day. All I drink is water. If I cheat, I suffer. I also use coconut oil twice a day. I don't eat dairy, sugar or any junk food. No wheat products or any other processed food. No stimulants either and that includes vitamins and fish oil.

Sad how we have to change our lives to get off this junk. However, I can see my abs again and it has been years since that has happened. I don't even exercise either. Well I can't exercise cause of my back and it makes my w/d worse. Good luck.

Moderation works well. I found that cutting out all carbs and sugars was a bit rough. I try to limit sugars and when I have something sweet, I try to have it with something that slows it down (with fiber). Also, I don't do sodas or coffee but one cuppa tea in the morning and afternoon seems to be ok. Of course, I'm off taper now but I still had some tea during my taper if memory serves. Can't go without a little chocolate in the afternoon with my tea and snack but no chocolate and minimal sugars after dinner, so as not to interfere with sleep. I also found that a little turkey as a snack with whole wheat cracker satified hunger pangs at night after dinner a couple hours before bed and stabilized blood sugar a bit and got some tryptophan going to help with sleep. I avoid refined cereals and white bread. Pasta is a rare treat. Pizza very rare as well. Salads and kale seems fine and protein with each meal. And yes, healthy omega 3s, fish, walnuts, sardines, salmon, chicken, tuna, healthy fats like avacado, almonds... fruit in moderation but ample veggies
