Tryptophan

Hi all,

Does Tryptophan work on gabba receptors?  Also, any experience what is better for sleep, tryptophan or 5htp?  I understand the former turns into the latter.

thx

I don't know if Trytophan works on the GABA receptors, but it is a chemical cousin to 5-HTP.  I did try 5-HTP, but had the following reactions to it (not that you will):

My eyes immediately started itching and watering, about 8 hours later both nostrils were completely stopped up so that I couldn't breathe through them, I could not sleep until 10:00 AM the next day (I took the 50 mg. capsule at 7:30 PM the previous night), it revved me up and my appetite increased.  I did not take it again.

Also, both 5-HTP and Trytophan should not be taken by asthmatics.

At any rate, perhaps some other buddies can jump in here and give you their experiences/advice.

Sincerely,

fg

Can someone please confirm whethere tryptophan acts on gabba or not?  Very important I find this info out ASAP before filling my script ($$$).  I'm sure someone here must know.

Thanks a lot.

For as far as I know tryptophan does not act directly on GABA.

That doesn't mean it's safe.

Do you need a prescription for that ? Here it's OTC.

Yeah I got a script from my sleep phych.  You can get them here OTC, but my doc told me with a prescription, they are 'Pharmaceutical grade.'  I used it years ago and it did help with the quality of my sleep.  It's an amino acid, I have not heard anything about it being dangerous, other than that ONE batch many years ago.

So it doesn't work on gabba?  GREAT!

Only 2 ml left to taper!

Thanks.

Hi Tryptophan does not work on GABA.  I take both 5-HTP and Tryptophan twice a week.  I find I sleep better (albeit slightly) on the two nights that i use it.  Melatonin does nothing for me.

Good luck

Of course, Trytophan should not be taken (generally speaking) with other antidepressants because of the risk of serotonin syndrome.

Hi,

I took tryptophan and melatonin for months. Tryptophan helped me to sleep for about 3 hours at a time.

When I woke up during the night and I couldn't fall back to sleep , I took more tryptophan.

I am grateful that I tried it and it worked for me.

Take care,

ali
