What determines w/d?

I was thinking to myself today, what determines or the reasoning behind why someone can be fine for 30 years taking this stuff vs. someone who took it for 3 years or 3 weeks for the matter. Is it just unique for all of us? Why was I ok for 3 years and out of the blue I get hit by a freight train? It has been the one thing I cant seem to understand. Before I was hit, the only issue I had was anxiety, which is what I was rx's Valium for. Then it seemed that out of nowhere (nothing had changed) I was hit with a barrage of physical feelings from hell. I understand that I was in tolerance or relative withdrawal, I just do not understand why then? Why not earlier or later. What determines the timing? Anyways, if anyone read or knows the answer to that one, let me know. - Thanks. FS

Just to clarify, I am not stating the obvious either. Such as reducing the dosage or quitting cold turkey. I guess I am talking about tolerance w/d. Or people who have been taking it for a period of time and are fine, then out of nowhere they are slammed.

I have the same questions. I do have tiny knowledge of some biomedical stuff. I know that our response to drugs can be very different and that these seem genetically determined. There are a host of other factors as well. It's a big question you're asking. All the mysteries don't make w/d any more fun, do they?

No they do not. I find myself asking these questions when I am really hurting. It is much easier to accept what I go through when I do not feel as bad. Of course. I can understand if it is just a genetics thing and that it is unique to all of us. Maybe certain stressors add to it as well. Because at the time it hit, I was going through a hard time of my life. But, that is the only thing I an think of.
