How disgusting, any Dr that would give an 18 month old an antipsychotic med for a diagnosis of bipolar disease should have their licence revoked, that is beyong ridiculous. How the hell can that be diagnosed in anyone that young!!! Its becoming mind numbing, no pun intended, to see who  these drugs and SSRIs are being prescribed too and the reasons given,  an 18 month old bipolar baby omg!!!!!!

I think we're seeing the beginning of a cultural backlash against overprescription of psych meds, which is a good thing.

Years ago, when my depression became med resistent (put on so many new ones I lost count), I was put on Seroquel (anti-psychotic) with whatever anti-dep I was on then. Pdoc told me that they were having success using anti-psychotics for depression. He said they were using it in combination with an anti-dep and it was helping people. I told Pdoc that I didn't want anything that made me sleepy because I was over-sleeping. He assured me that it didn't. At the lowest dose, that drug knocked me out (slept even more) and succeeded in putting me in a zombie state...I was so scared. Never again. I research all meds now before taking anything.

I can't believe such young children are given these drugs and live in mental hell. How can someone so young have bi-polar for f..k sakes?

OMG this angers me!  I was given risperdal by this one pdoc.  People around me did not like it.  It made me into a zombie.  I felt nothing anymore.  No happiness, no sadness, no nothing.  I felt like I was dying inside.  Like I didn't exist anymore.  I ended up having to change pdocs and the new one was like why are you on this stuff.  It is dangerous and should only be prescribed for people with serious mental health issues.  I swear as soon as I got off, within 2 months I was finally alive again.  Had I not changed doctors I would have still been taking that crap and not living my life.

How can people give their kids this crap?  Is it just an excuse to avoid parenting?  Just to push it off to the side and not deal with it like they do the elderly.

Great article!  Thank you for posting Honey.

I guess the State likes dumned down people in the population who cannot think or act straight, woder how long before they start giving them to all newborns, just in case they might have bi-polar?  :idiot:

I am definitely not a conspiracy theorist but wouldn't it be crazy if they were trying to dumb people down here in the US.  less chance of us standing up and wanting change.

I am the furthest thing from psychotic possible but have been offered antipsychotics more times than I can count by doctors who say they are helpful for "anxiety." I just have panic disorder, basically, with some PTSD from a traumatic series of life events. I am not schizophrenic or anything of the sort, am not bipolar, and have been through a few hospitalizations to rule any more serious issues out.

I also have been offered SSRI's and other antidepressants -- despite not suffering from depression -- by doctors to the point of absurdity. The last time I went to a urologist for what turned out to be a very discrete yeast infection that didn't clear up easily, I was diagnosed with some rare nerve disease and given a prescription for Lyrica, Gabapentin, Celexa, and Elavil.

Obviously, I thought the doctor was nuts and didn't fill these prescriptions. In fact, I argued with her in the office and told her I wouldn't pay the bill if she didn't justify the diagnosis and stupid prescriptions. I got stuck with a big bill and no relief for what was later easily diagnosed and treated with oral medicine for yeast.

She told me that these drugs altered the way the brain processed nerves. Sure. I bet they do. They basically give you a frontal lobotomy so that you can't feel anything at all. It makes no sense to me and is bad medicine. I found her explanation insulting to my intelligence and told her so.

MANY Psychiatric medications are really potent and are being offered to patients for very minor problems even though they won't work beyond pretty much turning you into a bit of a vegetable. I do approve strongly of medications used for correct medical situations (such as being prescribed Xanax for panic disorder, that makes sense to me perfectly well; what surprises me is how many posters here have been given benzos for non-anxiety-related conditions... that's a problem).

Doctors are too quick, in general, I feel, to turn to all kinds of quick-pill solutions. I don't believe alternative medicine is different either. It tends to fixate on similar thinking. What I think gets overlooked is trying to research the source of diseases and to treat these at their roots. If you have Malaria, will it help if you take Risperdal? Probably! But that's bad medicine.

I hope this article opens just one persons eyes to the dangers of over prescribing and mis prescribing. The abuse that goes on is horrible. I was given Klonopin for 7 months to get off Xanax . The Drug company suggested limit is 2 weeks. Thats  what initially brought me here. It all goes back to making money for the Pharm companies. There has to be more overseeing of these abuses. There should be a protest of some kind that will draw more peoples attention to the big problem.
