Need help....GI symptoms !!!!!!

[Su...]

Recommended Posts

Has anybody taken any anti-spasmodic or anti-cholinergic to help with gi spasms, and cramps ?  I think that my stomach, esophagus, bowel, rectum is suffering with spasms.  I feel pains in my stomach....heartburn...cramps in my bowel.  It could definitely be IBS related, I guess.

I am almost 13 months free...so why is this happening ?  Stress may be causing this flare up....but these symptoms are causing major stress.

I started taking the generic of Bentyl, yesterday in a  very small amount...and a little Pepcid.  I am so afraid to take medicines.  :-\

I certanily would appreciate hearing from buddies who have experienced these symptoms...and how long it lasted....what medications you took.

Thanks !    Sunny girl

Sunny Girl- I have GI Sxs, mostly RUQ pain and reflux, but part of it is anatomical as I have a hiatal hernia which exacerbates the reflux. My GI doc thinks my RUQ pain is my gallbladder, but I think its all WD, becuase when I take some valium, when I shouldn't, the pain goes away. I think seeing a good gastroenterologist might not be a bad thing for you to do to be assessed at this point, but try to find one that understands what you are going through, I know, easier said than done. You do need to find out if you have something that is truly physical. Whiel alot of our aches and pains are stress and anxiety induced we are still people that can have real things wrong with us. Sorting it all out can be hard though, I know.

I used an antispasmotic off and on. It did help but the sides where not fun. At the time I had very dry mouth and they made it way worse. Dry mouth invites bad bacteria. It did relax my bladder big time, there were times I swear it held 5 gallons and took forever to empty. Another side was I couldn't sweat, a person really has to watch that if in a situation where you need to sweat. It did make me very sleepy so the evening dose was welcome.

The one I used was hyomax.

[edit] I forgot to add that dairy and caffeine made the spasms worse.

Pokey.....it does sound like withdrawal causing your pain, if it goes away when you take some valium.  Does taking the valium cause you any problem ?  Stress and anxiety from W/D does cause so many aches and pains. I made an appointment with a gastroenterologist....and from what I have heard he is a very good doctor.  I dread it....but I need to get things checked out...because of the worry and stress it is causing.  Oh !  How do you treat your reflux ?

Jenny....I'm glad the prevacid helped you. I took prilosec for a while after the c/t, and when I reinstated...it started making me sicker, so I weaned off of it.  I don't handle stress very well, and have been stressing over all this w/d....and it seems like everything bothers me more than it used to. Major things always caused  my stomach or IBS to flare up.

So happy you are doing so well....Jenny.  :smitten:

Smoke.....how long did you take hyomax....and felt relief from the spasms, cramps ?  Did you have any problem stopping it....or did you just ease off of it ?  I opened up the capsules and taking small amounts of the Bentyl mixed in applesauce.  I may need to increase the amount to get better relief. How many times a day, did you take it ?  It gives me a drugged feeling for a while, and seems like I notice a little anxiety or something about 4 hrs later.  I have avoided taking very much of the Pepcid, but think I may need to take it more often to help my stomach and the heartburn pain.  I wonder if I could have an ulcer ?  Do you feel stomach, and chest burning pain ?

Would yogurt make the spasms worse ?  I never have caffeine.

Thank all of you for your help.  :)

Sunny, :)

I get all the stomach symptoms now. I have bloating, pressure, tightness, acidic feeling, and I don't know what else, or how to explain it. I have been eating foods that may have set this off more, and need to change that.

The stomach s/x's are very uncomfortable. IBS, gassy, belch, you name it. :( I was told to try peppermint tea.. by a friend. I don't know if this would help or not.

God, how much I miss pulling up at a restaurant and ordering a cheeseburger and a milkshake. I tried this once, and my stomach did not like it.

I even get a raw feeling in my stomach.

Billy.

I'd try some prevacid or something like that. I take it for acid reflux.  It helps a ton. No s/x. Those types of otcs are harmless generally. Not all meds are bad. Hope you get to feeling better soon!

Ginger tea and SOMETIMES peppermint tea are the only 2 things that have helped me...the ginger tea being the best.  I have had major IBS issues throughout this and if anything it has worsened recently with a lot of bloating, gas pain and gurgling.  But it was improving when I was first off of benzos, so I gather it will get better over time again.

My issue is that I have a fear of getting physically sick (stomach flu), so when the gurgles set in, it really can scare me.  Plus, i find that now that I have more of an appetite again, once in awhile i get REALLY hungry, and b/c I'm not use to feeling true hunger, it actually scares me.  I'm up now at 1:30am b/c of this fear.  I am afraid I'm getting sick, when really it is probably just hunger pains.  I ate a good dinner but I don't snack before bed.  Maybe tonight I should have.

I don't have as many issues with heartburn since being benzo-free, but my husband has a lot of heartburn issues (non-benzo-related) and he now sues Papaya Extract pills.  All natural, sold normally at health food stores, and he thinks they are great.  I've heard of people having success with taking an enzyme before eating as well.

I get the cramping in my bowls - very unpleasant to say the least.  For me, it worsens with hormones.  Do you find this?  I think that's common even w/out benzo w/d.  So perhaps we feel it even more since our systems are "hyper sensitive and hyper-aware".

I wish I had better advice, but all I can say is that it seems that a lot of our s/x seem to go on rotation and that when they are their worst, they are actually getting us closer to healing.  Again, the ginger is the best thing that has helped me.  Whether in a tea, or just chewing on a small piece.

All the best, and I hope this passes for you very soon.

Hugs,

Schatje

Hyomax and bentyl probably don't work the same. I know hyomax works in part by lowering acid.

I took it for about a month the first time but it was sporadic. The doc said it would take about six weeks to work but the pharmacist said it would work within 24 hours. I felt quite drowsy in a matter of a few hours and spasm relief in about the same. I donno, maybe just being drowsy helped to relax things. I don't remember any problems stopping it but it did take a long time for the very dry mouth to ease up. Its been so long ago that I can't remember if anxiety was ramped up by it, anxiety was pretty high at the time anyway.

Some yogurts can have a lot of added sugar. A true active yogurt would build pressure in the container, so I donno how much benefit there really is in store bought.  I don't know.

A couple of weeks on an H2 blocker or PPI shouldn't hurt. A person should know if it's actually too much acid or not enough before taking them though.

Hi Billy, :)

I'm sorry the stomach symptoms are bothering you , again.  I remember last summer when you were having a rough time with stomach symptoms.  I would like to have a cheeseburger and milkshake, too.  There are so many foods that I can't eat...and I miss them all.

Have you noticed any heartburn ?  I'm feeling it right now, and all I ate was a grilled chicken breast, baked potato, green beans, and yogurt.  There is sort of a choky feeling like the food didn't go down very well.  My doctor told me today, to keep taking Bentyl for spasms, and Pepcid to keep the acid down.

I know that raw feeling in the stomach.  You should hear me burp, sometimes.  I really watch what I eat, and still feel these symptoms.

Hang in there Billy ! :smitten:

Hi there, raypauch !

Well guess what ?  My doctor asked me today if I had ever been checked for celiac disease....took some blood....and now wait to find out.  Glad to hear that you found some things to help.  Passion flower is an anti-spasmodic ?  I should check into that.  I have tried chamomile tea, but it seemed to make my head feel weird.  I may try it again, and see if it bothers me still.

So happy you found these things that work for you. :)

Hi cnotr,

How long have you had acid reflux ?  Did it start after during withdrawal ? So happy that prevacid is working for you and you have no symptoms.  PPI's seemed to cause a lot of side effects for me, and I had to taper off.  They work great for others, though.  :)

Hi Schatje,  :)

I know that you have had your share of IBS symptoms.  Thank you for always sharing your experiences...and great advice.  I need to find out if ginger can cause heartburn...as I remember reading that before.  I have some papaya chewy things here....that I could try.

I am so sorry that you have the fear of getting physically sick.  I know that when I feel this heartburn, and stomach pain, cramping....it stresses me...and I feel afraid that it won't stop.  These types of pain make you feel so awful, and if you can't eat, lose weight....it seems so unfair.

I so hope that is true...that when these symptoms are the worst...we are closer to healing. :yippee:

I always try to keep up with how you are feeling...because I understand your pain.

Love,

Yes I do get heartburn, and feels like acid comes up in my throat (Sorry for the visualization). I think I get every stomach symptom. I was talking to a friend earlier on the phone, and he heard me belch over and over.

Billy............are you taking anything for the heartburn ?  Does the acid burn your throat ?  :o  I feel the choky feeling in my esophagus, but I don't know if acid comes up into my throat.

It feels better to get the gas out of the stomach....so burping feels pretty good.   Do you ever take Gas X  ?

I had to laugh about you burping, while talking to your friend on the phone.   You gave him an ear full !
