[je...]
Can anyone give me some advice as to what type of doctor I should go to for gettin off benzos? I want to switch over from xanax to valium because I am on a low dosage(.25) of xanax and can not cut accurately anymore. I have been to a psychiatrist a while ago but know that they don't do much except to put me on more drugs which I dont' want.
[Ca...]
I had the same result with a psychiatrist. That was before I figured out that I was addicted to Zopiclone. She considered the amount that I was taking as good as a placebo. Boy can they be complacent about drugs. I went to my family doctor when I realized that I was addicted. We took doctor ashtons manual and she didn't even need to look at it. But said that if we had done the reading on this and wanted a low dose of valium to taper down she would prescribe it. I was at first reluctant to go to my family doctor but here is canada you can't see specialists without a referral from your doctor. And besides, the weight for specialists is months in Canada. I gave her a try and it worked out.
[pi...]
I went to many many doctors before I actually found one that listened and agreed that the meds were making me sick. I am very glad I found him and also one other in the practice, they are internal medicine docs. He helped me with the crossover to valium and has been very supportive of me. He is not totally benzo wise but is very open to reading about benzo withdrawal. He did a lot of tests just to make sure the muscle issues I was having were not due to an auto immune disorder and does not prescribe any meds to me. At my last physical he noticed how much better I am doing now than when he first saw me. I was pretty much a wreck then. I think its kind of like shopping for shoes, you have to keep trying them out until you find one that fits. pianogirl
[Po...]
Jennn- I think you will need to do some research in your locality to find the doc you need. I go to a psych doc who is very good about helping me with all this stuff, he's not a pill pusher, but many are just as many GPs and internists are. It all depends on the doctor. I had a gastroenterologist who was technically good, but he had no time to answer my questions and if I suggested things that might be causing my symptoms he poo-pooed me. I fired him and found a GI doc that would listen and was open minded. The same applies to psych docs and GPs and internists...its the person behind the degree/specialty that counts.
