How long do these terrible symptoms last? I have had them throughout my Taper and they are getting worse.

What on earth can cause them?

Thanks for your responses

Hi Blower,

My ears have been ringing off and on for like 2 years. When I googled, it said that was a symptom of something wrong ie: After a concert where the decibles were too high (which is why the concert is so great int he first place) or earphones with it turned too loud, or damage to the inner ear or drum by way of trauma or over aggressive qtip, or drug addiction. I never even considered the last one. I had my ears checked. The drs knew I was on Lorazapam(ativan), they just shrugged their shoulders. So when I found the Ashton Manual and discovered what I was really experiencing (and it was insomnia and anxiety that brought me to google it) did I discover that my tinitus (that was plagueing me for so long) was actually a symptom tollerance on Ativan. Oddly enough I found that comforting.

Since I've started tappering the ringing has increased sometimes it's so loud I cant think. I was out the other night and out of my comfort zone, it was constant. I have to say, however, it is one of the symptoms that I find more tolerable than insomnia, depression, anxiety, or my skewed vision, or shakey hands, or mood changes.

It works like an alarm it seems like. If the tinitus is quiet, like it is now, and I read something like one of my bbs lost his job yesterday and the first sentence I read, they popped right on as I began to feel stressed for him. Or if I start to get frustrated dealing with something annoying. It's not constant the lower I get and the more I concsiously choose to keep myself in a peaceful place. I read an article that yoga can help balance out tinitus. I do yoga and it does indeed seem to be better. I don't know if this is a good idea or not, but sometimes when it is really loud it usually coincides with me being stressed so I will put on very loud music that drowns it out and it chest pounding cathartic as well. lol. So then either yoga or metal music! A little contradicting but an array of choices, none the less..haha

You look like you are doing great on your tapper and coming right along. That's fantastic! I'm sure it will go away, as it is a symptom not a chronic condition unless you have permanent damage from an injury of some sort. I would imagine that if you were hit in the head hard from say an accident or as a fighter or extreme sports enthusiast, but that could be ruled out by an exam I suppose.

If it is getting worse, perhaps you might want to consider an even slower taper for a little while to see if it eases? If not you could always up it a little. I don't think going up and down is really wise, but unless your run the risk of not being able to get your meds for tapering, I don't see how going slower can hurt to see if it eases up if it is so super annoying to you. I would take more tinitus to get to go faster. But not more of anything else! lol.

I have read that it does indeed go away. Differnt times for everyone. Do a yoga, rent a dvd for beginners, do it at home. See what happens. If it will work it should be immediate. I would be interested in the results for you.

Sarah does your noise move around your head or does it stay in one place. Mine moves around from top to back to temples and I have never had a totally quiet day, although  the intensity of the sound changes.

No, mine does not move around. It's just mostly ringing sound. THe only changes I notice are that it sometimes will be on one side but not the other or louder on one side not the other. It does increase in intensity and sometimes absent. I used to hear clapping sometimes before I started the taper. That used to freak me out. Sometimes it sounded like static, or like applause, that really freaked me out. That was before I began to taper, however and that has since subsided. Thank goodness!

I know that everyone is different. How long have you been tapering if you don't mind my asking? what is your taper schedule? I too am on valium and seriously feel better overall the lower I go.

Tinnitus was my first symptom early in my taper, i have it now since nov 2011, and yes it does move around sometimes it seems to come from my left ear and sometimes it seems to come from the back of my head! it also changes in frequency and sound, sometimes it seems to whistle/scream from my ear and other times it hisses or even sometimes it feels like its electrical in my head (how mental is that?  :idiot: If it was not for BB and other online resources I would honestly question my sanity)

Tinnitus has been one of my worse symptoms and peolple say it usually is the last one to clear up, but I believe it will heal at some stage!

Hang in there
