Vitamin C and Cortisol control?

[Ho...]

Recommended Posts

Does anyone know anything about the impact of Vitamin C on Cortisol levels?  Have you had positive results increasing your Vitamin C intake or taking a supplement for this purpose?  I ask this because I've started to notice a SLIGHT correlation to my Orange Juice consumption and my symptoms.  I suffer from extremely debilitating psychological symptoms still at 6.5 months off.  My worst times of day are first thing in the morning and during the evening.  I've researched enough and it seem this is due to the times when Cortisol levels (the stress hormone) are at the highest and lowest.  It seems when I drink a good amount of OJ, my symptoms are slightly better.  I especially noticed this morning my physical anxiety was a bit better after waking in the middle of the night (2x) and having some OJ because I was incredibly thirsty.  Is this really possible?  I will load up on Vit C daily if this is the case!! I am so desperate at this point and looking for any help I can get.  I am aware that certain vitamins (esp B complex) can really rev symptoms.  I am 7.5 months pregnant and already take my prenatal vitamins every day.  Thanks in advance for your help!  :)

Hope, i have heard from a very good source that Vit C is essential, i bought OJ yesterday and i am chugging it every morning, a smallish glass to start with but i believe Vit C is fine, as you say, it is certain B Vits that can cause problems, we can be too cautious with foods and juices yet we have to get some goodness from some things right? I´d say OJ is just fine, go ahead, it is probably helping you heaps.

Oscar- I am wondering if adding an extra Vit C supplement would be beneficial?  What exactly did your source say Vit C is "essential" for besides the obvious (e.g. keeping up immunity, etc.)?

I find that if I wake up in the night anxious, taking some orange juice does help to relax me. However I also find that eating something eg. some bread or a piece of chicken also can have the same effect.  Perhaps then it is not the Vitamin C but maybe just some food in general that counteracts the cortisol problem. I don't know. I'm only guessing. Any other views?

Bando- I hear you!  This is such a cruel and unbelievable process.  Hang in there!

Liosnasi- Thanks for the reply but I have tested out this theory re:food (kept a snack by my bed and ate it when I wake up to go to the bathroom) and that didn't seem to help me at all.

Whenever i have anxiety, i always find that if i eat something, it helps, sometimes i can even avert anxious feelings from the start... i would say that orange juice can help in as much as it would raise blood sugar levels but as with everything, moderation is key, i think that orange juice is good for health all round but i doubt there is anything special in it as far as cortisol goes, i would say any protein snack would be beneficial for anxiety, even a small snack, for me it´s about the dips in sugar levels, my guess is we are trying to raise this but not dramatically by use of sugar, that said, i believe orange juice in moderate amounts daily would be fine, i think supplements are not needed if your diet is healthy although you could get some blood tests for any deficiencies... just a suggestion.

Bando- I don't have any real suggestions for you.  I am suffering so badly as well and most days don't know how I make it through.  This is such a nightmare!  I do find that taking a hot shower, guided meditation, and any form of distraction seem to help slightly.  I pray for relief for both of us soon.  Take care.
