Klonopion and White grapefruit juice

Recommended Posts

I was woundering if anybody knows anything about drinking white grapefruit juce and taking my Klonopion, someone just told me that could be bad? What is the scoop on this subject? What would the interactions be? I am on a diet right now that calls for 3 8 oz cups of it a day?

Yea, you might want to do some more research on that because I have heard that grapefruit enhances the effects of benzos. Don't know how it works specifically but I would assume that it's not a good thing when you are trying to come off the drugs.

Grapefruit is a huge NO, it does enhance the Banzo so you ought to avoid it.

I was horrified to see it listed as a breakfast item in an old version of Shirley Trickett´s book, i can only assume it is left out of later editions.

You can google grapefruit + benzodiazepine, you´ll have plenty to read.

I avoid cabbage, broccoli and any cruciferous veg also... some foods can enhance benzo´s whilst others can clear them too fast.

Here you go:

INTERACTIONS OF GRAPEFRUIT WITH MEDICATIONS

Foods That Affect Cytochrome P450

The following foods are known to interact with cytochrome P450 isoenzyme. If you are taking any medication that utilizes P450 for its metabolism, you may want to avoid the following foods:

Inducers

Broccoli

Fried and charcoal broiled foods

Insulin

tobacco

ethanol

St John's Wort

HIV anti-virals

barbituates

prednisone(corticosteroid)

Inhibitors

ketoconazole(Nizoral)

cocaine

Grapefruit

I believe the ones below are all inducers but did not have time to verify:

Cabbage

Other Cruciferous Vegetables

Spinach

Leeks

Onion

Garlic

Parsley

Smoked fish or meat

Ham

Sausage

Some good links on CYP450.You can find lists of inhibitors, substrates, and inducers:

so you say it is a huge no because it enhances benzos? What do you mean exactly by enhances them? What is it doing to me? I have been drinking 3 cups a day of it for about 2 weeks now ?

It stops it from clearing out the body as it should, it can build up, it is not a good idea at all!!! I think eating grapefruit is even worse, it is a medical fact so stop doing it!!!!!

It is my understanding that grapfruit juice causes a reduction in the metabolism rate of benzodiazepines. This leads to higher serum levels for longer periods of time.  So when it's called an inhibitor, it means grapefruit juice is inhibiting an enzyme that breaks down the metabolization of benzos. So it appear it causes the benzo to stay in your body longer while maintaining the higher levels for longer period of time.

That make any sense?

Well, I have felt fine so far since I started the grapefruit diet, But I guess I should stop if you guys think this is going to mess up my titration???

I've been off of benzos for 7 months now -- do you think it's okay to eat these veggies when off?  The reason I ask, is because I eat lots of these veggies.

Maybe part of the reason you feel fine is because the grapefruit was messing with the half life or whatever it does that makes it a no-no? I dunno....I'm definitely not a food nazi and I would guess that a lot of the times where people attribute food to flares is merely a coincidence, but I would be very careful with foods that are known to interact especially if you are still on the drug.

Grapefruit is a definite NO whilst on the drug, it states it in many medical papers online.

As for broccoli, cabbage etc, these are fine post taper i would imagine, depends on how you feel and how you tapered but i would imagine post taper anything is OK by that point... these are healthy foods after all.

So what your saying is when I drink the juice it causes the K to stay in my system longer? Which makes my titration harder? So my titration would be smoother if I stopped the juice? Or are you saying that it could cause some kind of reaction and damage oragans in my body?

If you stop the grapefruit you might feel a slight dip in plasma levels, maybe you won´t, but it is not a good idea to have grapefruit as it will not allow timely clearance of the drug and in some cases it can magnify it´s effects but this is probably very slight... if you are tapering, it would make sense to stop using it but no real harm done, drink orange juice instead maybe?

I was googling this stuff last night and read 2 diff studies that says grafruit juce dose not affect Klonopion, But I also read twice that many that says it does, this is still confusing to me.. So basically are you saying by what you know is that it will instensify the drug in the body if it truly does mess with it? Or what I mean how wuld it affect my tappering? I am sorry for asking so many stuipid questions, I have so much brain fog from the K.

Thanks

Jason

Thanks for the link, I appreciate it, I guess what my question still is, is is says it messes up the amount of drug going into your system like lets extra in correct? But how is this harming a person? What is the actual side affects? It really gives me no real answer other than it lets extra med into your system at one time or something like that is what I am getting out of this? What are the potential side affects or dangers from actually continuing  drinking grapefruit juice while on Klonopion?
