Anyone Taking Anything For Their GI Troubles??

Just wondering if any of you who are experiencing lower GI and bowel issues have tried anything to correct the imbalance in your gut? I've had GI issues this entire time, started when I was on Ativan back in Dec. And my naturopath sold me some flora capusles - heavy duty probiotics to balance my gut. I took them only while I was on an anti biotic, but thought, hey, maybe I should start taking them again. Started yesterday. No change yet.

Kinda depends whether the GI issues are a result of w/d or something else.  Also depends what the GI issues are.  I've got 2 GI disease (1 upper and 1 lower intestine) and I'm a big proponent of fiber (insoluable and soluable).  But if your body isn't used to fiber, start slow.  I don't know much about flora imbalances, but if Jamie Lee Curtis is right, then Activa or something in that arena might help

Well, without getting to graphic, I have never had issues in that department. I am bascially a vegan so get plenty of healthy fibre. But, since the benzos were introduced to my system I've had borderline diarreha every single day. I've kind of just waited for it to get right, but it hasn't and then I hear everyone on this forum talking about GI issues. And then there was that really good article posted about the correlation between brain and gut and CNS, so I just figured it is all connected in my case.

I have lost ALL faith in my doctor so will not waste my time seeing him about it. I am seeing a new naturopath next week and hopefully that "benzo-wise" doctor that I stumbled across a month from now. So maybe they will have some input.

For now I'll continue with the flora supplements and see if it improves. Thanks for the suggestions.

One thing I've tried, with some success were psyllium fiber capsules.  It's soluable fiber but it absorbs fluid in the process, so that might be worthy of consideration.  My guess is that you avoid caffeine.  If not tho, it can mess with the GI track.  Also might want to consider the BRAT diet for a bit (Banana's, Rice, Apple Sauce and Toast). It's not hugely exciting and shouldn't be a long term solution, but it's used often for sensitive guts.

I understand your comment about doctors and have been told I'm not allowed to express mine on here (kidding...sort of lol) but suffice it to say, I'm in your camp.

Hope the flora suppliments help!

UGH!!! Caffeine is the one vice I have not let go. It used to be my ONLY vice. That and the odd glass of wine.

I only drink tea though and maybe the odd Starbucks. And I have cut back quite a bit. Oh, why, oh why, oh why?  :'(

I know, I know, I know :( . For me, in days gone by, I'd be very happy to have an IV of coffee connected to me lol.  Now my guilty pleasure is diluted decaf. 10 parts water, 1 part decaf. So mostly dark water lol

But here's the thing, it may or may not be the culprit.  Maybe cut it out for a bit of time (week? couple weeks?) and see the results.  It is always possible this is having no impact and then either way you'll know.

When it comes to tea, I really must be an addict, because it's just denial, denial, denial. The thought of "cutting it out" completely for even a week upsets me. I figure if I cut back to 5 or 6 cups a day, I'm doing something huge!

Tea has been my "go to" drink since I was 4. My dad gave me my first taste. It was full of milk and sugar and it was so yummy. I remember that day in vivid colour. He died that year, and perhaps on some psychological level, it is my connection to him because it has always been my comfort food, if you will.

But I suppose I could try. I don't think I should cut it out c/t. That could cause me even more distress and issues. But I will try. In fact, right now I'm sipping a steamed milk latte from Starbucks instead of a machiatto. Baby steps!! hahaha!!!

Wow monyd, I can absolutely see why the attachment.  I'm so sorry for your loss.

Using steamed milk latte to wean off of machiattos LOL

Do what you think is best and at your pace.  Again, it's very possible this isn't the trigger and it's simply part and parcel of w/d.

GI sx have been one of my worse and lingering problems.

When my nausea and gas pains are unbearable I've take 1/2 a pepto bismal.  I've done this probably 6 or so times.

I'm still having issues with sandy, loose stools.  I've been trying kifer for the probiotics in it.

Good luck

Hope56, I see from your signature line that you also c/t from ativan. How long were you on it? I took it for 6 weeks including my poor attempt at a taper. I too did not know better and I went too fast. But I was desperate to just get off it.

My worst sx is d/r. It has been the most persistent. Have it daily, but only when I'm out in public or driving, or at work. So, basically, everywhere but home. LOL!!! Last week I thought it was actually fading, but this week it has returned along with low grade anxiety, really just tremors, and broken sleep. I really pray I am not going into that 2 month slump that I've heard people mention.

I'm not letting it get to me this time. Just carrying on and hopeful it starts to fade again. Because I know now that it does fade. But I hate it just the same!

Years ago I was tested for gluten intolerance because my mom has Celiac and it can be inherited. I was told I was okay. But post-benzo, who knows. Good suggestion Raypach. I never thought that Gluten could be causing problems. So many things to cut out! :-s
