[Bi...]
I'm no health expert, but do you guys still eat foods like the occasional candy bar, restaurant, and other foods? I still eat Chinese at times, Pay Days, and Hamburgers, and whatever. It does seem to increase withdrawal symptoms, but really, is it bad to eat these foods? Do you guys eat the occasional candy bar or pizza? My stomach is pretty bad, but I can't help but eat what I enjoy at times. Maybe I feel guilty. I don't know. I start eating something and I just can't stop. Maybe my body needs it? I know we are all different, and I believe in eating healthy, too. But do you guys eat healthy 24/7? I guess those are my clustered questions. Like the last few days.. I have ate Chinese, Peanut Butter Sandwiches, Spaghetti, Eggs, Potatoes, Potatoe chips, fruits, and all kinds of things. It seems when I eat what I want; I feel more myself. I think I push myself too far at times, but I mean I have to get back into living. Thanks, Billy. [Wi...]
Hi Billy, A lot of those foods release endorphins so it makes sense why they make you feel good. On the flip side, as you suggested they can also trigger s/x. Guess it really comes down to which outweighs which. And yes if you feel better than worse, I strongly suggest you do whatever it is that allows you to get back into living. And I also know that after having felt restricted for some time, it's common to want to indulge. Ultimately I think balance is the key. Personally, my food choices are extremely limited because of GI diseases I now have that resulted from other psych meds, on top of w/d. So my list would not interest you lol. [Tu...]
As I type this I am waiting on Dominos pizza and chicken wings, I might feel like crap after I eat it but I never blame the food. I just eat what I want and if I feel bad or my symptoms flair up I blame my body and not the food, so basically my body will have to heal while eat what I want! I'm not saying you should eat what you want, thats just me, I have sacrificed and put up with a lot from benzos that I will not have it control even what I eat! It might take me longer to heal, but so be it, my body will just have to deal with it! Oh one thing, lots of different foods drive my tinnitus crazy at times! Good luck
[bl...]
Why would these foods trigger symptoms? I'm not following here.
[Wi...]
I can't speak to all of the food but for example, anything that is high in simple carbs (chinese food, candy bars) converts to sugar and for many sugar seems to rev symptoms. There has been some discussion that MSG (Monosodioum Glutimate) often found in Chinese food, might cause problems in that Glutimate is the yin where Gaba is the yang, in that they balance each other out so it has been suggested that Glutimate too can rev symptoms, but it may simply be another theory. Another theory is that when one eats a big meal it can stimulate the vuagus nerve which communicates with the brain and may cause GI Distress or physical symptoms like palpitations etc. And finally, in w/d many people experience GI distress as many receptors reside in the gut. So since no one really has a handle on what causes the GI distress or what helps it, it's possible different foods, for different people might rev symptoms. [Ga...]
Hi BillyF, I am a reasonably healthy guy who tries to eat a varied diet but I don't punish myself for not eating 5 portions of fruit/veg a day. I eat chocolate most days, McD's sometimes, pizzas, kebabs- in addition to better stuff. I seem to tolerate this OK. I also drink a Diet Coke most days without issues. I can't take coffee, but I never drank much. I had been feeling quite guilty about what I eat in comparison with others on the forum.
[Wi...]
Don't forget that guilt is also a w/d symptom. And for those of us, ok for me, who is extremely limited in my diet, just make sure you enjoy what you are eating cause you are eating it for me too
[Bi...]
Thanks everyone. I do feel guilty sometimes because I can eat certain stuff, but it's not like I go out and eat big layered or 12 layered cake LOL. Nah, I just eat what I can. I feel it in the mornings, feels like a night out when you are drunk, and eat on top of it I need to start drinking smoothies, eat healthier. Anyone got any smoothy recipes? But fruity ones. I cannot drink something without a little taste. I drink loads of water, but that's different. Thanks for all the replies.
[pd...]
I would highly recommend staying away from processed foods and sugar. It is no secret that nuts and dark green vegetables help the brain and help with depression (not saying you are depressed). I would highly recommend everyone google the “paleo diet.” It will definitely help with every aspect of your life. I jumped off Klonopin 9 days ago…and while I haven’t had great sleep (it is my only issue), I think I am having much better luck than most. The last four days I’ve been getting 5-6 hours of sleep – not great…but like I said, better than most. No idea if I just lucky so far or if my lifestyle is helping. Below is some info that I think has helped my recovery tremendously; I copied and pasted it from a post I made a few weeks back…hope it helps: “Just try to be as healthy all around as possible. Eat well (lots of clean veggies, stay away from processed food; i drink Gowalla "mean green" daily), exercise daily for at least 45 minutes, as intensely as possible, to rid myself of energy and anxiety amongst other benefits, spend some time in the sun regardless of temperature to get Vitamin D, work on breathing, calm your mind, ease your stress (yoga will help with this) and try to be happy. Any time you wake up...assume it is b/c you have to go to the bathroom; so don't stress, just get up, use the restroom regardless if you have too, and get back to sleep. Don't assume it is withdrawal.”
[os...]
Smoothie recipe (my own): 1 Large Sweet Pear 2 Peaches 4 Kiwi Fruit 1 Cup Mazanilla Tea (Chilled) 1 Shot Honey http://i100.photobucket.com/albums/m16/VillaLeon/293119_221207704596671_100001223297672_695694_3271891_n.jpg You can use 3 kiwi instead of 4 for a smoother less zingy taste. [bl...]
BillyF, What kind of smoothies do you like? I have a million smoothie recipes! I love them (and cooking in general... it's a huge passion of mine, if anyone ever wants a recipe for anything involving special dietary needs, I can usually figure out something yummy). I love freezing mangos and bananas and then whipping them up in the blender with a little milk (I usually use almond milk) and some sugar (I usually use agave nectar myself). Also delicious is frozen blueberries with the same mix. Don't use more than a half a banana or it gets goopy. If you want it to be more tart, try orange juice instead of milk. More tropical? Try some canned coconut milk. The possibilities are unlimited and smoothies are hard to mess up!
[Wi...]
pdt Sadly, while I agree a "clean" diet is ideal, it presents a bit of a challenge in w/d. I for one can't take suppliments ie Vit D. I also live in a place, as half of the US does, that during the winter months, even on the sunnyest days, can't provide sufficient Vit D. Additionally, while certain foods may help with depression in non-w/d'ing people, some of those same foods actually increase the metabolism of benzos through the liver, shortening the half life and messing with dosage. I like your suggestion regarding sleep as well as breathing and yoga. I think those might prove beneficial for many. I'm really glad you are doing so well! [bl...]
Ha! Now I'm going to have to call my husband and ask him to pick up kiwis on his way home from work to try this one. I thought I'd tried every smoothie in the book. Kiwi, I have not tried. Trying to make something good come from the fact that I'm already salivating as a w/d side effect! That just kind of worked. [os...]
Oscar, that looks delicious! I second that!! Thanks but sadly, since starting my taper back in July of last year, i have not been making smoothies, i will get back into it as soon as i finish my taper... So much to look forward to, i hate limiting my foods. :'( I might make this just for a treat, i´m not sure if it will be too detoxing though.
