[su...]
Hello Gordon's Wife, I saw your question and put together some information that might be helpful. I am the type of person who seeks to know what is happening and why, it brings comfort to me. I hope it does the same for you. “The Accidental Addict” by Di Poritt & Di Russell, 2006 Throat “Throat symptoms affect only a few people. For those who do suffer, the most common problem is a recurring mild sore throat. ‘Gunky’ throats which have to be cleared all the time with an ‘er-hem’ sort of cough are also experienced. Throat pain and ulcers take the joy out of eating. Repeated dry, scratchy throats make people think they have developed allergies. The most worrying symptom is a sensation of choking- people panic when they feel they cannot swallow.” “Benzo-Wise, A Recovery Companion” by Bliss Johns, 2010 Throat: sore, tight, choking sensation, spasming “The Ashton Manual” by Heather Ashton, 2002 Digestive problems. “Some people have not problems at all with their digestive systems during or after withdrawal, and may even notice that they are enjoying their food more. Others, perhaps more prone constitutionally, may complain of a range of symptoms associated with “Irritable Bowel Syndrome” (IBS). These can include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, constipation, abdominal pain, flatulence, gaseous distension and heartburn. Quite a few have found these symptoms so uncomfortable that they have undergone hospital gastrointestinal investigations, but usually not abnormality is found. The symptoms may be partly due to over activity in the autonomic nervous system, which controls the motility and secretions of the gut and is very reactive to stress, including the stress of benzodiazepine withdrawal. In addition, there are benzodiazepine receptors in the gut. It is not clear what the functions of these receptors are or how they are affected by benzodiazepine withdrawal, but alterations in these receptors may play some part in increasing gut irritability.” “A few people have difficulty swallowing food – the throat seems to tighten up especially if eating in company. This is usually a sign of anxiety and is well-known in anxiety states. Practicing relaxation, eating alone, taking small well chewed mouthfuls with sips of liquid and not hurrying make things easier and the symptom settles as anxiety levels decline.” I hope this is helpful, Summer
[La...]
This is my most bothersome symptom, I can swallow and can breathe but it feels like I cant take a deep breath because of this tightness lump in throat feeling, there is an actual medical term for the condition but my benzo brain cant recall it, along with this I get indigestion with belching, I got it on benzos, interdose witjdrawal? but its worse in withdrawal, I have come to realize its anxiety for me or could be the whole gabba receptor gut brain connection, but regardless of the cause its scary but for me I know not life threatening so I try to remember that as it gets worse if i start to panic about it, hope this helps Ladygrace

[Br...]
Summer, thanks so much for your post. At six months out throat problems are my most troublesome remaining symptoms. I've got 'gunky' throat and mild choking sensation with a lot of mucous. Sometime it feels as though I've forgotten how to swallow, as everything tenses up. My voice feels weak, probably from constantly clearing my throat. I don't like to talk much anymore. I can't wait for this to clear up.
[cn...]
I actually posted about this issue last week. I was really struggling with it. Nobody really wrote much response to me. So im glad I found this. Thanks SummerWind! Im actually in a window again. Yay! I'd say im about 80-90% healed! Or its I'm like 100% healed for a month then feel like im at 50% for a few days followed by another month of 100%, anyone else like that?
[Ho...]
I also get the esophageal spasms. They can be very painful. I find I get them the most when I'm tired. They suck.
